    Improving Self-Regulation in First Graders

    Get PDF
This capstone project focuses on the development of self-regulation skills in a first grade class. Self-regulation is an individual\u27s capacity to comprehend and control their behaviors, emotions, and thoughts (Bockmann & Yu, 2022). Self-regulation abilities influence a child\u27s academic performance. For example, some school age children get easily distracted from one activity to another, struggle to follow directions, and find it difficult to regulate their feelings, which can seriously create difficulties in their learning capabilities. Therefore , there is a need for self-regulation strategies to be taught to young school age children. By improved emotional control, students with higher self-regulation can obtain higher grades (Montroy et al., 2016). Also, increasing children’s self-regulation skills helps create a safe and positive environment in the classroom; thus, the children will feel more motivated to learn and complete their tasks. This project addressed three areas of self-regulation: emotional, behavioral, and environmental. This capstone project provided 3 lessons for first grade children to increase their self-regulation skills. The lessons were presented in Salinas at the Montebella Elementary School with a first grade, bilingual English and Spanish class where students are mostly of Mexican descent

First Grade Student’s Social and Emotional Development

    No full text
My capstone project focused on first grade students\u27 development of social and emotional skills. Children have difficulty learning when they are struggling to get along with their peers and are struggling to control their emotions in a classroom setting. When children struggle with these skills, they are more likely to have social difficulties at school, thus resorting to inappropriate expressions of frustrations such as hitting, biting and/or screaming (Jones, 2017). In order for children to thrive in school, they have to have a strong foundation of social emotional skills. Even the brightest student or student with high achieving academic goals, cannot reach their full potential without having strong social emotional skills. For this reason, I am focusing on helping first grade students to further develop these skills, so when they move to the next grade, they will have a better understanding of what it is to be self aware of their own emotions, to self regulate their emotions, and to be socially aware of those around them such as their peers, and family. This project took place in Echo Valley Elementary school located in Prunedale, California. They come from low income families, and their primary language is Spanish. To address first grade students\u27 development of social and emotional learning skills I created three lessons. Each lesson focused on one specific social emotional learning skill such as self-awareness, self-regulation, and empathy

    Hosting a Youth Summit

Friday Night Live is a youth-led substance abuse prevention program that empowers youth to address community issues. In support of the Friday Night Live mission, we hosted a group of youth on a summit in Anaheim, CA, for my capstone project. Trip Components like transportation, flights, permission slips, finances, and lodging were crucial in making this event happen. With the implementation of this project, we hoped the participating youth would gain an experience that would inspire them to take the lead in promoting solutions in response to community issues. Most youth who participated in the summit deemed this experience valuable, encouraging them to take more interest in being part of policy and decision-making. Through this experience, the agency was able to create a planning workbook that will make it easy for all staff in the future to continue to make more opportunities like this available

    Needs Assessment

Seniors\u27 needs are not being met. In California, 54.6% of elders need assistance in routine care, and 20.9% of elders need assistance in personal care (Kietzman & Chen, 2022). The causes are elders cannot take care of themselves, individuals are neglected, and limited insurance or finances. The outcomes are physical health decline, institutionalization in a nursing facility, and premature death. Health Projects Center is a non-profit organization that offers community programs to assist seniors to live and age in their homes independently. The capstone project is a needs assessment to determine if the clients are receiving services from the Multipurpose Senior Service Program by gathering data through a survey. The expected outcome is to implement changes that would meet the seniors\u27 needs. Information was provided to the agency on 12 clients surveys and how their needs are not addressed. Recommendation for the agency is that this project needs to continue to address the needs of elders

The Campus Health Center at California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) where I did my internship provides care and referral services to the CSUMB community. The campus health center also has medical staff dedicated to meeting patients\u27 needs and concerns. My agency\u27s main goal is promoting health and wellness. Majority of the campus college population are young students who are not aware of diabetes and its long term effects because the college population is not as affected compared to older populations. My project is about bringing awareness to diabetes in the CSUMB community. I did so by creating an educational video on diabetes, what it is, the long term consequences of this disease, lifestyle contributors to diabetes, and how to prevent diabetes. My project met the expected outcomes by educating students on healthier lifestyle choices that would prevent diabetes. The Campus Health Center can help this issue by bringing further awareness to diabetes by doing tabling events on campus and holding educational workshops on diabetes for the community

At-Risk Youth Community Engagement Valley Health Associates

    Get PDF
Valley Health Associates is a non-profit organization specializing in substance abuse and recovery all across Monterey and San Benito County. The community served its youth ranging from ages twelve through seventeen. The Youth Outpatient Treatment program serves transitional youth from eighteen through twenty-four years old. Project implementation will be providing outreach fliers along with information about VHA. The purpose of this project is to spread awareness to get others involved. The problem of substance abuse comes from all ages, and younger lives are being affected without any knowledge. My method of outreach for VHA was professional communication. It was developed by speaking with local at-risk youth programs and alternative education schools. Knowledge in health and human services to create a partnership to gain intake referrals. The most important findings of this project include that not many agencies can connect with local non-profit organizations such as myself. What VHA can do to address the problem of opioid addiction is to continue pursuing awareness and outreach to our local community

FAMILIA ADELANTE: Hope For Youth And Families At Risk

Partners for Peace (P4P) will implement the Familia Adelante (FA) project to help at-risk Latino families. Counselors, probation officers, and parents recommend cultural change adaptation programs for Latino families. DePanfilis (2006) believes neglect damages brain development more than trauma, but self-esteem issues affect adolescent behavior more than violence. Providing evidence-based services and support can help prevent abuse and neglect. Child abuse usually leads to delinquency, antisocial behavior, and unhealthy sexual behavior in adolescents. FA projects require parents to set limits, communicate with their children, work together, love, and use discipline as a corrective tool. P4P\u27s FA project helps immigrant families and their children, even though school children face violence and bullying. Community involvement and support can improve the mental and emotional health of adults, children, and adolescents. Kids do better in school when parents are present and involved. We only suggest looking for better programs to help Monterey County families

This Capstone project was implemented at Growing Greatness located in Watsonville, CA to address the lack of access to leadership programs for the underserved youth in Watsonville with purpose of empowering them to become effective communicators and advocate for them to inspire change through an in-person workshop about speaking to inspire them for action by and speaking with passion, empathy and purpose. The project was implemented using a focus group based approach that involved participants and youth leaders. The evaluation of the project revealed that it met most of the expected outcomes, and that the participants reported significant improvements in their ability to express their ideas and advocate for their communities. However, some challenges were identified, such as the need for resources and follow-up support to sustain the impact of the workshop. To address these challenges, the project recommends that the agency should establish more partnerships with local schools and youth organizations
