Bringing the Outdoors In: Creating Classroom Environments with Plants and Animals
The focus addressed in this Capstone Project is the benefits of live plants and animals within the classroom. This is an important issue for both students and teachers because live organisms within the classroom aids mental health, physical health, strengthens morals, and broadens horizons. An evidence based argument is offered that these issues are growing within the schools and need to be addressed with all tools available. The primary stakeholder perspectives chosen were teachers, because they are affected and can see the benefits of the topic at hand. Three themes/action options emerged from an analysis of the data and explored as ways to address the issue presented. Three themes emerged from an analysis of the data: 1) many students are not in touch with nature; 2) there are many students struggling with mental illness; and 3) morals need to be strengthened and discussed within the classroom. The introduction of plants and animals is argued to be the most effective way to tackle the challenges stated above

Utilizing Gloria Anzaldúa’s Autohistoria-teoría methodology, this humanistic study explores embodied experiences in the education system, guided by the question, What does the absence of my history do to my identity and pride? Theorizing across historical and personal contexts, I weave together personal archival materials, including school test scores, magical thinking, storytelling, and historical legacies of colonialism and American education. Estimating the impact of environmental management on strawberry yield using publicly available agricultural data in South Korea
Advanced information and communication technologies (ICTs) have made data collection more efficient for agricultural studies. Using publicly available database in South Korea, we estimated the relationship between the management of air temperature and relative humidity and the strawberry yield during two harvest seasons. Longitudinal data of multiple greenhouses were merged and processed, and mixed-effects models were applied to account both observed and unobserved factors across the greenhouses. The averages of air temperature and relative humidity inside each greenhouse do not take volatility of the time-varying variables into consideration, so we assessed the management of each greenhouse by the percent of time that air temperature between 15 °C and 20 °C (denoted as T%) and the percent of time that relative humidity between 0% and 50% (denoted by H%). The statistical models estimated that the strawberry yield decreases with respect to the number of days since harvest began and the rate of decrease is slower when T% and H% are higher. This study used large-scale multilocation data to provide the practical suggestion that air temperature and relative humidity should be maintained within the optimal ranges to mitigate the loss of strawberry yield especially at the later phase of a harvest season
Potential Soil Remineralizers from Silicate Rock Powders (SRP) as Alternative Sources of Nutrients for Agricultural Production (Amazon Region)
The demand for mineral fertilizers has increased over the years. In the states of Amazonas and Roraima, acquiring conventional fertilizers used in agriculture is challenging due to the distance from large production centers. In these regions, alternative fertilizers are needed to maintain food security. However, research in agrominerals of silicate rock powders (SRP) is still incipient. The objective of this research was to characterize three important Units of Agrogeological Interest in the Manaus/Boa Vista axis in the Amazon region of Brazil: (i) EBAM Quarry: quartz monzonites from the Água Branca suite, partially potassified, (ii) Granada Mining Quarry: basalts from the Apoteri formation, and (iii) Samauma Quarry: riolites from the Iricoumé Group. Samplings were carried out followed by chemical analyses for determining macro and micronutrients, in addition to potentially toxic elements; petrographic analyses were performed for mineralogical characterization as well as granulometric analyses of the powders collected in the quarries. The results showed that the EBAM quarry rock powder meets the standards established by Brazilian legislation. It also has low levels of potentially toxic elements and only 15% quartz, indicating good safety in the use of this SRP, in addition to the large supply of the material already crushed, for which there is still no market. At the Granada Mineração quarry, SRP also has the necessary characteristics to classify as a soil remineralizer, including K2O content above 1%. At Pedreira Samauma, although SRP does not qualify as an agromineral, it has more than 5% K2O and 77% aphanitic matrix, which could result in a more accessible release of abundant K and Si to the soil–plant system. Using laser granulometry analysis, it was possible to make some considerations about the effects of the crushing process in such different lithotypes and, finally, to characterize and classify the prospects of greatest interest for “rochagem” in the Amazon
Improving Stress Management for Elementary School Students
This capstone project focuses on stress management for elementary school students. As there has been a rise in elementary school students\u27 reports of stress, a longitudinal study examined daily school stress and coping strategies of elementary school children in the United States. The students were ages 7 to 11 years old and results highlight critical relations between students’ exposure to daily stress at school, their stress appraisals and future expectations, and usage of coping strategies (Sotardi, 2016). The students\u27 ability to manage daily stress in productive, socially acceptable ways was reported to be restricted. This shows that students may not know what coping strategies to use when they are stressed. Some factors that can possibly contribute to children’s stress levels are that children spend the majority of the day going through difficult academic work, extracurricular activities, and trying to find new friends. Other factors can come from home where children can be experiencing economic stress, neglect, or verbal, physical, or mental abuse. According to many psychologists, pediatricians and health care providers, stress plays a major role in children’s physical, mental and social problems (Valizadeh, et al., 2012). Stress can be described as an anxious, worrying feeling. The biological effects of stress undermine children’s ability to concentrate, remember things, control and focus their own thinking (Thompson, 2014). Therefore, elementary school students need information about stress and stress management techniques. A set of three lessons on the same day was provided for elementary school students at Bay View Academy Charter School in Monterey. The expected participants for the service are elementary school students (8 to 10 years old). The three stress subtopics I am addressing in my project are how stress affects the body mentally and physically, how to get help when stressed, and what techniques to use for stress management
Dismantling the School-to-Prison Pipeline: Studying The Effects of Disciplinary Actions in Schools for Students
As educators, a large part of our job day in and day out will be to enrich the minds of young students, who are our future generations. Given this, schools are tasked with student discipline in addition to their learning development. The focus of this senior capstone is to examine the school-to-prison pipeline and identify what educators can adjust in order to decrease the funneling of students into incarceration. Utilizing literature reviews, interviews with in-service teachers and administrators, and studying various approaches to disciplinary actions, the result findings indicate that there are alternative, more positive approaches to disciplinary actions in schools to lead students to success. Individual student accountability avoids a heavier course of action, allowing affected students more opportunities to change and develop
Role of Teachers In Empowering Migrant Students in Their Education
Many migrant families working in the Monterey Bay areas have to move from one place to another, so their children are considered to be migrant students. The majority of these families migrate to California so their children can continue their education with the support of their teachers. There are existing programs at the national, local and university level to support migrant students. These programs provide the migrant students with the resources needed to succeed in their education. They provide tutors for migrant students in their classroom as well as one-on-one service to them throughout the school year. This senior capstone research project examines the role of teachers in empowering migrant students in their education. The findings revealed that teachers have been an important part in students\u27 success through a literature review, data collection from three interviews, one observation and a survey for Mini Corp Tutors
Parent Workshop on Young Children\u27s Emotional Development
My capstone project focuses on parents with preschool-aged children. At this age, children feel their emotions before they can recognize what they mean, and it is difficult for them to self-regulate their emotions. Executive function abilities, as well as language abilities, are some of the potential reasons for the difficulties. Research has demonstrated that the first five years of life are crucial for children\u27s emotional development. According to Chronis-Tuscano et al. (2016), to be able to regulate emotions and respond to them effectively, the use of executive functioning skills as well as several cognitive processors are required. Also, as Chronis-Tuscano stated, even though social-emotional development gets better with the maturity of cognitive and neurological systems, parents play an essential and important role in helping their children’s ability to regulate emotions effectively. In addition, children from immigrant families have unusual development challenges and opportunities due to their multilingual and multicultural backgrounds. This can make it difficult for children to verbalize their feelings, resulting in inappropriate behavior. For this reason, educating Hispanic immigrant parents about young children’s emotional development is essential. This workshop was geared specifically towards Hispanic immigrant parents with preschool children ages three to five. This two-day workshop focused on informing parents how to teach their children to identify their emotions, learn how to name the emotions they are feeling and show their children how to regulate emotions through different techniques. The information was delivered in Spanish. The workshop occurred at Virginia Rocca Barton Elementary School belonging to the Alisal Union School District which is located on the east side of Salinas, CA
Earth observations into action: the systemic integration of earth observation applications into national risk reduction decision structures
Purpose - As stated in the United Nations Global Assessment Report 2022 Concept Note, decision-makers everywhere need data and statistics that are accurate, timely, sufficiently disaggregated, relevant, accessible and easy to use. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate scalable and replicable methods to advance and integrate the use of earth observation (EO), specifically ongoing efforts within the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) Work Programme and the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) Work Plan, to support risk-informed decision-making, based on documented national and subnational needs and requirements.
Design/methodology/approach - Promotion of open data sharing and geospatial technology solutions at national and subnational scales encourages the accelerated implementation of successful EO applications. These solutions may also be linked to specific Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) 2015–2030 Global Targets that provide trusted answers to risk-oriented decision frameworks, as well as critical synergies between the Sendai Framework and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This paper provides examples of these efforts in the form of platforms and knowledge hubs that leverage latest developments in analysis ready data and support evidence-based DRR measures.
Findings - The climate crisis is forcing countries to face unprecedented frequency and severity of disasters. At the same time, there are growing demands to respond to policy at the national and international level. EOs offer insights and intelligence for evidence-based policy development and decision-making to support key aspects of the Sendai Framework. The GEO DRR Working Group and CEOS Working Group Disasters are ideally placed to help national government agencies, particularly national Sendai focal points to learn more about EOs and understand their role in supporting DRR.
Originality/value - The unique perspective of EOs provide unrealized value to decision-makers addressing DRR. This paper highlights tangible methods and practices that leverage free and open source EO insights that can benefit all DRR practitioners
Effects of Habitat and Temperature on Reproductive Success of Fucus distichus in Central California
Rapid changes in environmental climate trends have influenced the temperature and salinity of marine ecosystems across the globe. This ongoing shift is predicted to have implications for the reproductive success of species that are integral to both the generation and identity of their ecosystem; namely, foundation species. Coastal marine foundation species, such as macroalgae, are expected to experience drastic environmental changes. Of particular interest to central Californian shores is the foundation species Fucus distichus (Family Fucaceae). This alga serves as a community builder residing in the upper intertidal throughout the Northern Hemisphere. While F. distichus residing within San Francisco Bay (SFB) have been determined to be genetically well-mixed, populations within the Bay are currently declining, so a better understanding of what affects their reproductive success is needed. This research explored how the reproductive success of F. distichus in SFB and along nearby open coast is influenced by habitat (i.e., sites that vary in their location and salinity), temperature, and the interaction between these factors to better understand how the reproductive success of coastal marine foundation species may respond to predicted future climate regimes.
Samples of F. distichus were collected from three habitat types (i.e., Outer Coast, Inner Coast Full-Salinity, and Inner Coast Low-Salinity) with three haphazardly-selected replicate fields per habitat over the course of 7 sampling cycles. Randomly-selected receptacles from the F. distichus samples were processed according to standardized protocols. They were then randomly sorted and incubated in two different temperature treatments that resemble current (12°C) and predicted (15°C) environmental conditions in SFB and nearby open coastline. For each cycle, the total number of eggs and embryos released by each receptacle (defined as reproductive output) along with the fertilization success of embryos was observed after 96 hours. The resulting data were analyzed using a series of three-way ANOVAs that investigated the effects of temperature, habitat type, and sampling cycle, and their multi-way interactions.
Both reproductive output and fertilization success were determined to have significant three-way interactions between the three factors analyzed. Reproductive output primarily was driven by a relationship between temperature and habitat, whereas fertilization success was primarily influenced by relationships involving sample cycle. In general, receptacles in the 15°C group experienced greater reproductive output and fertilization success than those in the 12°C group. Additionally, individuals from more saline habitat types experienced higher reproductive output and fertilization success than those from fresher conditions. These findings align with previous hypotheses that F. distichus may respond favorably to warmer future conditions. Future research should add more F. distichus populations or survey related genera to determine how predicted environmental conditions may influence reproductive success of coastal marine foundation species
