Benefits of Alternative Assessment for College Students’ Academic Success and Mental Well-Being

    Get PDF
Assessments play an imperative role in evaluating a student’s knowledge within the classroom. Traditionally, educators have relied on traditional assessments to measure students’ comprehension of course material. However, in contemporary education, there has been a shift towards alternative assessments for a variety of reasons. This senior capstone research project examines students’ and professors’ perspectives and how alternative assessments could affect them. Through the use of literature review, surveys with professors and students, and interviews, the findings underscore the importance of integrating alternative assessments in educational practices, not only for enhancing students’ academic success, but also for nurturing their mental well-being

Bridging the Gap with Personalized Case Management Support

    No full text
The project aimed to address the lack of case management support for clients in the In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) program by improving IHSS hour utilization and enhancing access to essential resources among seniors. The focus was on seniors aged 65 and above, primarily monolingual and lacking technological literacy, residing in the South County area, particularly in Watsonville. The project ensured that four clients received case management services, with at least three of them demonstrating increased utilization of IHSS hours within three months. Additionally, clients gained greater access to resources through relevant referrals. The implementation process included comprehensive assessments, weekly home visits, consistent communication with clients, collaboration with community providers, and ongoing documentation. These strategies ensured that clients received the support needed to navigate the IHSS program effectively. As a result of this project, four seniors received case management services, which included assistance with the Electronic Visit Verification (EVV) system and connections to multiple resources. For two of these seniors, their caregivers were able to receive payment for hours they had worked but had not yet been compensated for, with backlogged hours ranging from three months to 1.5 years. The other two seniors, whose caregivers were providing care but were not yet enrolled in IHSS, received assistance with the enrollment process. This will allow them to claim previously worked hours and ensure they receive future payments as well. Recommendations for next steps include expanding the number of clients participating in the project and sustaining collaboration with community stakeholders to connect seniors with appropriate agencies offering resources to enhance their quality of life

How Monitoring Food is Protecting People

    Get PDF
While the issue of food safety has always been a concern for humanity, what that looks like has changed drastically over time. Instead of trying to judge if a stream has safe drinking water, consumers are now faced with deciding which preservatives and pesticides they expose themselves to. With the multitude of United States agencies tasked with protecting the public, standards and quality control processes should be transparent and efficient. Since the creation of the Bureau of Chemistry, numerous acts have been passed that regulate ingredients, processing procedures, and minimize contamination risks. When a spoiled product enters the food web, there are stages of recall responses to limit harm to consumers and track down the present error. By examining the processes in place to protect consumers from harm, we can determine if our current system is effective or if changes need to be made. By looking at the governing aspects of our food protective agencies, we can uncover potential reasons why our system isn’t as effective as it is on paper. While completing these evaluations, a conclusion will be made about if the shortcomings of the FDA are a result of a broken system or typical errors expected of such a large organization

Self-Care Techniques to Decrease Special Education Teacher Burnout

    Get PDF
The focal topic of my capstone project is special education teacher burnout and how self-care techniques can reduce the likelihood of chronic stress and burnout. The challenges of being a special education teacher include but are not limited to, various disabilities and behaviors, lack of classroom and administration support, and overall management. Research conducted by Emery and Vandenberg (2010) stated that special education teachers often experience burnout, which commonly leads to employee attrition. Burnout and the personal stress that comes with it are the biggest contributors to the shortage of qualified special educators throughout the United States. Their challenges involve the overall classroom size, various disabilities, lack of management skills, and overall support from administration, parents, and other teachers. This presents a need for self-care strategies and various services that help special education teachers deal with burnout and stress. To address this issue, I will present a workshop that teaches special education teachers various self-care strategies aimed at reducing job burnout. This one-time workshop will be presented to a group of six special education teachers who work at a nonpublic, individualized educational school; Brite Horizons in Scotts Valley, California. The children at this school have various disabilities. These students have often been expelled from public school due to the SPED programs not being able to handle their behaviors. In my workshop, I will first address why special educators experience burnout. Second, I will analyze the negative effects that special educator burnout has on the school, the children, and the teachers themselves. Third, I will discuss different self-care techniques that aim to decrease job burnout

Exploring the Cultural Significance of Mexican food: A Personal and Global perspective

    Get PDF
This project dives into the meaning and values rooted in Mexican food and takes a look at the significant influence on Mexican culture and its personal significance throughout my life. I will explore how Mexican food plays a role in helping me express the the appreciation I have for my culture. Mexican food resembles the diversity and versatility of the country as well as its people through its ingredients and overall influence on society. Mexican food and culture create a sense of community in a country that feels so divided at times, while simultaneously acting as a catalyst for pride and celebration of the culture in the U.S. and beyond. Furthermore, this project highlights the global impact of Mexican food and culture, digging into how it has been able to garner widespread popularity and ultimately adapt to diversity in the kitchen throughout the U.S. and beyond. With the spread of Mexican food and culture across the globe, consumers continue to enjoy and partake in the culture on a daily basis, promoting and introducing it to others who have not yet indulged in its rich dishes and its culture. Drawing on my personal experiences and reflections, I express how Mexican food has played a pivotal role in shaping my cultural identity and growing connections within my heritage beyond my immediate and extended family. Sharing my mother‘s recipes and enjoying Mexican dishes from other families continues to be an enjoyable experience for me. This is what I feel that my Mexican culture intends to do, which is build and share community through our love of food. It is clear that there is a strong relationship between food and pride within Mexican culture and I believe that the importance of Mexican food in both personal and global contexts is explained throughout this paper. The inspiration that Mexican food and culture and provide, drives the notion of breaking down barriers of alienation and inferiority orchestrated by society in order to create meaningful connections across cultures around the globe

School-based Intervention Programs for Preventing Obesity and Promoting Physical Activity for School Students

    No full text
Childhood obesity poses a great concern for students struggling with weight related issues that could lead to various health problems. Given this issue, schools introduce programs that aim to encourage activity among students. However, the impact of their efforts varies due to the differences in funding and resources among schools. This senior capstone examines school-based intervention programs for preventing obesity and promoting physical activity for school students. Through the use of literature review and interviews with teachers and administrators, it was discovered that schools facing financial constraints encounter heightened difficulties, prompting efforts to consolidate resources in addressing childhood obesity. Consequently, a holistic strategy was formulated to advance health and wellness among students through partnerships with community organizations, local authorities, and schools. This initiative also facilitated the exchange of best practices among participating entities

    Increasing Preschool Children’s Scientific Inquiry

    Get PDF
This capstone project focused on increasing scientific inquiry in young children. The problem that exists is that there is not enough focus on scientific learning in preschool settings compared to school settings with older age groups. According to Dejarnette (2018), young children can learn about science and are naturally curious, making them natural scientists. Science curriculum has many benefits for children, such as the development of observation, documentation, investigation, communication, and literacy skills. Science curriculum can create curiosity and enjoyment in young children while they learn about the world around them, creating a lifelong interest in learning (Larimore, 2020). Exciting yet simple activities can be enough to engage young children. The project was designed to increase scientific inquiry in preschool-age children (ages 3-5). First, the children were introduced to various scientific tools. Second, the children practiced using their tools by observing and investigating nature. Finally, the children documented their observations of nature by drawing. I created a three-part science curriculum plan implemented in a Head Start center in Watsonville. The participants were between three and five years of age in a preschool classroom setting. The participants spoke English and Spanish

Informing Adolescents about Potential Internet Risks and Tools for Safely Navigating Online Spaces

    Get PDF
This capstone project focuses on digital safety for adolescents who have already been or are accessing online spaces for the first time. Adolescents today have been growing up in the age of technology and are likely to have had access to digital devices, such as smartphones, tablets, computers, and gaming consoles, from a much younger age than previous generations. Today, 96% of teens in the U.S. say they use the internet daily, with about 95% of teens reporting having a smartphone (Faverio & Sidoti, 2024). With adolescents accessing the internet more often, they must understand the risks they may encounter online and how to navigate it safely and responsibly. Adolescents are more vulnerable to online risks, such as phishing scams, grooming, or other dangerous behaviors. Because of this, there is a need for comprehensive online safety education that explains the potential risks they may come across with real-life examples and tools to navigate online spaces in safe and smart ways. My project will first describe the potential risks of the internet, using the four main categories of online risks (content, contact, conduct, and commerce). Secondly, the project will explain the potential dangers and benefits of talking to people online and online friendships. Lastly, the project will highlight examples of ways adolescents can protect themselves online using the acronym SMART (Stay Safe, Don’t Meet Up, Accepting Files, Reliable?, and Tell Someone) and how to implement it into their online lives. My capstone project will address this by providing a one-time workshop incorporating these three lessons in an interactive presentation that includes videos from adolescents\u27 experiences and points of view and an assessment of their knowledge. This workshop will be presented at the Village Project’s after-school site in Seaside, California, with participants ages 12 to 15 years old who have access to the internet through digital devices
