How Does Food Related Content On Social Media Affect The Ability For People To Be Creative With Regards To Food Habits And Choices?

    Get PDF
Social media is very present in most people\u27s contemporary daily experience with food content on these apps, mainly Instagram and TikTok, being a large part of this content. Social media provides users with a lot of information about many different things they may be interested in. However, the very aspects that make social media a positive tool in people\u27s lives also prove to be negative. Through an introduction of Immanuel Kant\u27s idea of imagination, social media is analyzed in regard to its ability to promote creativity in regard to food habits and choices. Food habits and choices are often a creative endeavor which further proves the relevance of creativity in relation to food habits and choices. The data for this project was mainly collected through personal interviews of people between the ages of 19 to 26 and all having social media. Four main themes were taken from this data which present perceived positive and negative effects of social media in regard to people’s food related habits and choices. The ability for people to find local restaurants and social media’s short video style content being two examples of aspects that prove to be positive and negative. Based on the data and analysis, a recommendation for social media usage habits that create a healthy relationship with food proves to be important and relevant. In the end social media provides us with many tools for creating positive habits and choices surrounding food. However, other aspects of social media prove to possibly hinder the creative dimension of food habits and choices

Increasing College Readiness and Awareness Among Hispanic/Latino High School Students

    No full text
This capstone project focuses on informing low-income Hispanic/Latino high school junior and senior students, ages sixteen to eighteen years old, about college readiness and awareness. Many Hispanic/Latino students lack knowledge and resources about college, therefore widening the ethnic gap in higher education attainment. Often, Hispanic/Latino students may be the first in their families to attend college, and they may not have college-educated parents to rely on for post-secondary information. Thus, this requires them to seek post-secondary information for themselves. Leo and Wilcox (2023) indicate Latinx high school graduates are registering for college at record-high levels. Still, completion rates are low, suggesting that Latinx students encounter barriers when entering postsecondary institutions (Leo & Wilcox, 2023). In the absence of resources surrounding post-secondary success, it is vital to provide Hispanic/Latino high school students with equal educational opportunities. To confront this need, I developed a one-time college readiness and awareness workshop for Hispanic/Latino high school junior and senior students at Aptos High School in Aptos, California. It addressed three topics split into three sections. The first was students’ ability to identify the benefits of a college degree. Second, students will be able to identify the differences between higher education public institutions in California, i.e., California Community Colleges, Universities of California, and California State Universities. Lastly, students will be able to identify financial aid types available to afford college

Increasing Head Start Parents\u27 Awareness about Kindergarten Readiness

    Get PDF
Kindergarten is important for children because this is where they start to be prepared socially, emotionally and cognitively to reach their full potential at school. Many of the children in the USA are not prepared for kindergarten and this is something that can be prevented if their parents engage in at home activities. This activities help prepare their children for kindergarten. This project focused on informing Migrant Head Start parents of ways they can support their children’s development to achieve kindergarten readiness. Kindergarten readiness helps children make the transition to school be smooth and positive. Parents need mentorship and guidance to help their children be ready for kindergarten in different areas of their development. The main areas of development I educated parents on so they can help their child achieve kindergarten readiness were cognitive and linguistic development

Helping Kindergarteners Understand their Emotions and their Peers

    Get PDF
The social-emotional development is described in this study. This study examines children who lack pro-social-emotional abilities and find it difficult to build meaningful interactions with others. In my work, I discuss how research and the lessons I taught my participants can help children gain greater social-emotional abilities and an understanding of different emotions. I work with kindergarteners who are five to six years old because I want to support them in developing deep connections with their peers and in learning about their feelings. The issue I will be bringing up is that kids struggle to build positive relationships with their classmates or other people in their surroundings because they don\u27t comprehend the feelings of other people. Children\u27s lack of empathy for the feelings of their classmates makes this an issue. Given the problem of kids not understanding the emotions of their peers, it\u27s important to explain to them the range of emotions and how they might support their friends in times of need

Bridging gaps in image meme research: A multidisciplinary paradigm for scaling up qualitative analyses

    Get PDF
This paper outlines a multidisciplinary framework (Digital Rhetorical Ecosystem or DRE3) for scaling up qualitative analyses of image memes. First, we make a case for applying rhetorical theory to examine image memes as quasi-arguments that promote claims on a variety of political and social issues. Next, we argue for integrating rhetorical analysis of image memes into an ecological framework to trace interaction and evolution of memetic claims as they coalesce into evidence ecosystems that inform public narratives. Finally, we apply a computational framework to address the particular problem of claim identification in memes at large scales. Our integrated framework answers the recent call in information studies to highlight the social, political, and cultural attributes of information phenomena, and bridges the divide between small-scale qualitative analyses and large-scale computational analyses of image memes. We present this theoretical framework to guide the development of research questions, processes, and computational architecture to study the widespread and powerful influence of image memes in shaping consequential public beliefs and sentiments

As Vietnam scales the global value chain, what does it mean for its workers?

    Get PDF
Almost four decades since Vietnam abandoned Marxist central planning in favour of market socialism, Vietnam is now well integrated in the global supply chain and is an important manufacturing hub for labour-intensive industries like textiles, electronics, and even automobiles. The economic expansion -- powered by foreign investment and exports -- has reshaped Vietnam\u27s labour market, creating higher-skilled jobs but also challenges like wage stagnation and worker abuse. For all the fanfare over investment dollars from the likes of Apple, Samsung, and Intel -- as well as a host of Chinese companies -- there are signs that the welfare of workers, both in terms of pay and working conditions, is far from a top priority. Meanwhile, restrictive policies around unionisation and dissent have served to hamper labour advocacy. So how to make sense of an uneven labour landscape overseen by a Communist party with long ties to workers? What can be done to ensure Vietnam’s workers truly benefit from the country’s hard-won place in the global value chain? And what can policymakers, businesses and civil society actors do better to protect the very people who underpin Vietnam’s economic future? Vietnam labour experts Prof Angie Tran from Cal State Monterey Bay and Dr Tu Nguyen from Asia Institute examine the often fraught labour relations in Vietnam with host Sami Shah. The Importance of an Operations Manual

    Get PDF
Without having an operations manual programs are susceptible to misinformation between one another. Partners for Peace is a program that is dedicated to serving Monterey County, and its troubled youth as well as their parents/guardians. Creating an operations manual will help to ensure that all staff members are on the same page when it comes to day to day issues around the office. Every staff member now has a copy of the operations manual, this will ensure that all members of the team will be on the same page when issues arise in and out of the office. In order for this operations manual to continue to be relevant in the future it must be updated at least once a year to make sure that everything is up to date with current rules and regulations

    Get PDF
This capstone project focuses on informing parents about the challenges and needs of siblings of children with autism. Parenting is a profound and meaningful responsibility, and having children with special needs adds to this daunting job. It is imperative for parents to nurture the development and awareness of all of their children, both neurodivergent and neurotypical. This workshop will give parents the tools to navigate this responsibility. I developed a workshop that first informs parents about the positive outcomes for children who have siblings with autism, such as higher levels of empathy and compassion. Second, I will address the challenges for siblings of children with autism. Third, I will discuss how to establish stronger relationships with the siblings of autistic children, which includes developing healthier and more open communication patterns. The workshop will be conducted over Zoom with parents/caregivers of middle-aged ages 30-50 years old who care for typically developing children and children with autism
