Negative Effects of Social Media Usage on College Students

    Get PDF
My capstone project focuses on the negative effects of social media use on college students. Social media has become the primary source of communication for college students, but its impact on self-esteem presents a mix of effects. One of the major effects that social media can have is on self-esteem, and individuals with low self-esteem try to compensate by becoming active in on-line activities” (Pineiro, 2016, p. 9). To address the negative impacts of social media usage, I created a two-day lesson plan for lower-division HDFS students at CSUMB. The lesson focuses on the adverse effects on self-esteem that can lead to eating disorders, self-harm, procrastination, decreased productivity, and misinformation. By teaching students how to use social media safely, I can set the students up for success

Additive vs. redundant properties of theory in the advancement of weight-control behaviors within community-based obesity treatments in lower- to lower-middle income women

    Get PDF
Background: Obesity is a growing epidemic with non-surgical/non-pharmacological interventions having only nominal and transient effects on excess weight. Those persistent shortcomings are associated with minimal understandings of impacts of treatment-associated changes in psychological variables and their relationships. Women of lower incomes have high rates of obesity and might have increased difficulties accessing evidence-based programs. Methods: Women with obesity of lower- to lower-middle incomes participated in 6-month community-based treatments in the United States emphasizing either self-regulatory skills development (behavioral methods group: n = 63) or typical education in exercise and healthy dietary practices (education group: n = 48). Results: There were significant 6-month improvements in self-regulation, self-efficacy, mood, physical activity/exercise, dietary behaviors, and weight in both groups. All improvements were significantly greater in the behavioral group. Based on the incorporation of multiple behavioral theories, separate multiple regression models were fit for prediction of the weight-loss behavior changes. Stepwise entry of changes in self-regulation, self-efficacy, and mood each significantly contributed to the explained variance in physical activity/exercise change. Change in self-efficacy was most relevant in the prediction of change in dietary behaviors. Change in physical activity/exercise was significantly related to change in dietary behaviors; however, a regression analysis indicated that only physical activity/exercise change was a significant independent contributor to the overall accounted-for variance in lost weight. Conclusion: By incorporating key tenets of social cognitive theory, self-efficacy theory, self-regulation theory, coaction theory, and the mood-behavior model in an additive manner, suggestions and emphases for addressing psychological variables for improved weight-loss behaviors within scalable obesity treatments were advanced

    Comprehensive Community Medicine

    Get PDF
Comprehensive Community Medicine (CCM) is a theoretical framework designed to address the complex needs of individuals with dual diagnoses of mental illness and substance use disorders (SUDs). Dual diagnosis is highly prevalent, particularly among populations experiencing homelessness, and is associated with poorer health outcomes and increased healthcare service utilization. Structural inequities, including a fractured healthcare system, exacerbate the challenges faced by this vulnerable group. Research indicates that effective care for dually diagnosed individuals requires a layered approach addressing clinical, systemic, legal, and housing barriers. The development of CCM has been informed by interviews with local stakeholders, including County EMS board members, non-profit organization representatives serving the homeless population, a local emergency room director and physician, as well as a practicing psychiatrist.. These discussions underscore the need for a multidisciplinary team-based approach, comprising a psychiatrist, an advanced healthcare provider (RN or paramedic), and a social worker. This team would deliver comprehensive/continuous care through diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders and SUDs, administration of medications and advanced life support (ALS) compliant procedures, and facilitation of connections to essential resources (social services). Guided by principles of compassion, dignity, and equity, CCM aims to provide scalable and effective solutions to improve health outcomes and reduce strain on emergency services in communities

Effects of Parent Involvement in Academic Achievement of Upper Elementary School Student

    Get PDF
This senior capstone research project focuses on how parental involvement can affect academic achievement in upper elementary school students. Understanding the various factors of parental involvement is crucial to gaining insight into its impact on students, parents, teachers, and principals. Through the use of literature review, interviews with four teachers, one principal, and anonymous surveys of one classroom of 26 fourth-grade students, the result findings indicated that parental involvement is a vital component of students\u27 academics and is essential for their positive progress. Effective communication among teachers, principals, and parents regarding class and schoolwork significantly impacts students\u27 academic achievement. In addition, finding strategies in mutual understanding of the importance of parental involvement will greatly benefit students. It is important to note that parental involvement influences how students learn, comprehend, and engage with new information. If students feel that school is not important enough for parents to be involved, they may lose interest and care less about their academics

The Effects of Physical Education on the Well-Being and Academics of Elementary School Students

    Get PDF
This senior capstone examines the vital role of physical education in schools, highlighting its profound impact on students\u27 academic success and overall well-being. Despite its importance, many districts have recently reduced physical education programs, negatively affecting students\u27 well-being and academic performance, particularly in elementary schools. This study aims to demonstrate the necessity of physical education in elementary schools for facilitating students\u27 well-being and academic achievement through a comprehensive review of existing literature and interviews

Benefits of After school programs on the academic success on lower elementary school students

    Get PDF
After School programs offer significant benefits to students. They support students by offering tutoring, homework assistance, enrichment activities that reinforce classroom learning, and helping young students develop essential skills in reading, math, and critical thinking. The purpose of my capstone project is to examine the benefits of afterschool programs on the academic success of lower elementary school students. Through literature review, interviews with teachers, a coordinator, an academic coordinator, an administrator, and anonymous student surveys, the result findings indicated that afterschool programs are important and have benefited students in meeting their needs to foster their success. It also highlights the importance of school-based intervention programs, along with safe and supervised time, as key factors for success

The Importance of Mental Health in Children

    Get PDF
This capstone project focuses on teaching children how to identify and cope with their mental health challenges. Ho and Funk\u27s (2018) research highlighted how children\u27s social and emotional health impacts their development and social interaction. During this time, children experience changes within themselves, increased sensitivity to stress, and challenges to socially interact with others. They begin to develop mechanisms, which can either support or delay their emotional well-being. Understanding these changes is important for contributing to their future mental health. To promote resilience and healthy coping mechanisms, I presented a three-day workshop to third-grade students (8-9 years old) from Hispanic backgrounds at Mendota Elementary School in Mendota, California. The workshop will help students identify their mental health challenges and develop effective coping strategies through activities, such as mindfulness techniques, and guidance on reaching for help when needed

Get them off the deck: Straightforward interventions increase post-release survival rates of manta and devil rays in tuna purse seine fisheries

    Get PDF
Bycatch remains a major challenge in commercial fisheries, with large numbers of threatened species impacted by incidental capture. One of the most vulnerable bycatch groups in global tuna fisheries are the manta and devil rays (mobulids), which have experienced significant population declines in response to both targeted and incidental capture. The retention of mobulids has been banned by many countries and Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs), but major knowledge gaps exist in the group\u27s survival rates following release after incidental capture. Mobulids are accidentally captured in purse seine fisheries, and in recent years, many RFMOs have mandated handling and release procedures for mobulids in an effort to maximize survivorship and reduce impacts of fishery bycatch. We synthesize data from four empirical studies using satellite tags (n = 89) to estimate survival rates of four species of mobulids (Mobula birostris, M. mobular, M. tarapacana and M. thurstoni) released from tuna purse seine vessels in three global regions. We directly estimate the effects of intrinsic, environmental, and operational factors, and handling and release methods on mobulid survival rates. We found a significant negative effect of time spent on deck; likely negative effects of the brailer number in which a ray was brought out of the sacked net, and remaining in the sacked purse seine net until after brailing was complete; and likely positive effects of being captured in a floating object set and body size on survival probability. The observed survival rates of mobulids with known fates were 50 % for M. birostris, 74.2 % for M. mobular, 33.3 % for M. tarapacana, and 20 % for. M thurstoni. The median predicted survival probability under optimal handling conditions was 83.7 % for M. birostris, 95.3 % for M. mobular, 82.2 % for M. tarapacana, and 53.7 % for M. thurstoni. These empirical estimates can improve handling methods and vulnerability assessments of these endangered species in global fisheries

The Positive Impacts that Volunteers Have on Hospice Patients

    No full text
Central Coast Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice provides home healthcare services to residents across Monterey, Santa Cruz, South Santa Clara, and San Benito Counties. The organization\u27s mission is to provide residents with high quality healthcare services by meeting their needs in an honorable, caring, and accessible manner. One of the primary outcomes of this project is finding the positive impact that volunteers have on hospice patients. The project is to collect feedback from staff who collaborate with patients daily and determine how to improve their goals and needs. Creating a survey is an easier way to get answers and feedback quickly because they will be submitted through a Google Form, so they will not get lost or misplaced, and multiple forms can be submitted. The survey consisted of ten questions about the number of days a volunteer should visit the patients, the benefits of companionship visits, and any suggestions that there are to improve the experience with volunteers in hospice care. The results showed a need for more Spanish-speaking volunteers, as companionship visits positively improve patients quality of life and reduce caregiver burnout. In addition, it was requested that volunteers be introduced during interdisciplinary team meetings. Overall, this is a great way to involve the patient and get them to interact and create a support system outside of their caregivers
