Transitioning Coordinated Family Support Services from the For-Profit to the Nonprofit Sector

    Get PDF
The demand for nonprofit family support services in Monterey County exceeds available resources, leaving many without access. Coordinated Family Support Services (CFSS) in Monterey County serves individuals and families referred through the San Andreas Regional Center, which is funded by Medi-Cal and state funds. Inadequate access to nonprofit family support services affects individuals and families in Monterey County. Contributing factors to this issue include limited resources and funding, not enough community engagement and partnerships, and insufficient staffing and expertise to provide these services. Transitioning CFSS from a for-profit to a nonprofit is impractical due to financial constraints and lack of infrastructure. The project aimed to assess the feasibility of transitioning CFSS to a nonprofit model, but research through Nonprofit Connection Santa Cruz County found it unviable. The research findings conclude that transitioning CFSS is not feasible due to the availability of additional state funds for services for those without Medi-cal as well as . It is recommended to increase collaboration with community organizations and implement cost-effective service delivery models within the current for-profit model

Given this, this capstone project examines how to improve mental health and well-being of elementary school students through stress management activities through the use of literature review, interviews with two teachers, two parents, and two prospective teachers, and classroom observations. The results indicated the many benefits and different perspectives on how to improve students’ mental health and well-being through various stress management activities

Evaluating Ecological Conditions of the Salinas River After the Removal of Arundo donax During Wet and Dry Years

    Get PDF
River ecosystems in the United States are facing significant ecological and economic impacts from invasive species. In California, along the Salinas River, Arundo donax has become a major concern, aggressively outcompeting native plant species and altering river flow and regime. The Resource Conservation District of Monterey County has been removing A. donax since 2014 using methods like mowing and applying herbicides and cleared an additional 415 acres in 2019. The study investigates the changes in invertebrate communities before and after A. donax removal, using the California Stream Condition Index (CSCI) and the Dry Stream Condition Index (DSCI) to assess ecological health. Despite removal efforts, the study finds that ecological conditions did not significantly improve, suggesting that A. donax removal alone may not be sufficient to restore ecological balance. The findings underscore the complexity of river ecosystem restoration, the need for comprehensive management strategies that address the root causes of degradation, and the importance of innovative assessment tools to evaluate ecosystem health under varying conditions

Developing Metrics of Ecological Integrity for Wetlands on the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation

    Get PDF
This study highlights the critical function that benthic macroinvertebrates (BMIs) play in monitoring ecological health and provides a thorough framework for creating metrics to evaluate the ecological integrity of wetlands on the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation. This research aims to improve wetland management by introducing a multi-metric index (MMI) based on benthic macroinvertebrate taxonomy data, in light of the important ecological roles of inland freshwater wetlands, such as decomposition, biogeochemical cycling, and support for biodiversity. Along with the urgent need to address anthropogenic pressures that pose risks to these ecosystems, these wetlands are of cultural and environmental importance to the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, which serves as the driving force behind this project. Based on ecological integrity, the study effectively isolates BMis vulnerable to ecological disturbances by statistical analysis and careful field sampling, creating a strong MMI that can distinguish between reference and degraded sites. Using the Quality Assurance Project Plan for Monitoring Assessment and Tracking of the Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation Wetland Resources, the technique includes a thorough analysis of 34 wetlands. To ensure that the BMI measurements adequately reflect the health of the wetland in the face of natural environmental conditions and human activities, the research combines several statistical and modeling techniques. This approach produces a set of five essential measures that together constitute the MMI, enabling an evaluation of the ecological integrity of wetlands. The findings give the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe a useful tool for making educated decisions about land management in addition to making a substantial contribution to the area of environmental science. Prospective research avenues encompass investigating the applicability of MMI in various wetland ecosystems and incorporating socio-economic, cultural, and ecological elements to develop all-encompassing wetland management approaches

Cultivating Confidence: The Impact of Goal Setting and Self Assessment on Self- Efficacy Among At-Risk Secondary Students in English Language Arts

    Get PDF
If students perceive themselves as successful readers and communicators, then their self-efficacy in the academic arena will shift, increasing motivation and achievement in turn. Interventions established to support self-efficacy among at-risk students may improve their chances of secondary completion and this will have a positive impact not only for students currently in our schools, but also for their future success and the success of our wider communities. This quantitative two group study was designed to examine whether individual goal setting when paired with self assessment could positively impact at-risk secondary -efficacy in ELA for grade 10. Self-efficacy was measured using The Student Self-Efficacy Scale as a pre and post test. The treatment group was introduced to goal setting and self assessment as a mini unit with three days of training lessons followed by four weeks where students set a weekly academic SMART goal and assessed their progress using a self assessment rubric. The results of this study support the hypothesis. Findings herein show that individual goal setting combined with self assessment did positively impact the self-efficacy of at-risk 10th grade ELA students in a statistically significant way. Students identified as at-risk in the treatment group significantly increased their mean scores on the SSE scale, while at-risk students in the control group showed no significant change

Effects of Bullying on Elementary School Students

    Get PDF
In the United States there are many schools, no matter the grade level, who still to this day struggle with dealing with bullies in their schools. This is something that is very concerning especially at the elementary level due to the fact that they are experiencing very strong emotions at a young age. With this in mind, school members such as teachers and administrators need to come up with a solution to resolve or lower the chances students get bullied at their schools. Research has shown that bullying greatly affects students in many different ways that many wouldn\u27t really think. At such young ages it is crucial that students get support and encouragement in order for them to successfully succeed in their education. With bullies antagonizing other students it not only affects the victim but as well as the one doing it. Victims of bullies would be the ones affected the most since they are the ones who are being harassed. Experiencing depression and being excluded from others is something that will negatively affect their state of mind and their chances of being successful in their education due to the lack of self motivation and drive to push past these barriers, especially when they start off young. In order to alleviate this situation, schools can aim to have programs such as Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, or STAC, rather than just sticking to a “zero-tolerance policy.” Research done in this study was conducted via online surveys, in which three different groups were participating: teachers, current students, and past students

With a focus on the two-year learning gap caused by remote learning and school closures, the researchers highlight the significance of understanding teachers\u27 firsthand experiences and insights. They argue that the implementation of effective tutoring programs emerges as the most promising approach to bridge the education gap and support students in their academic recovery. By recognizing the unique challenges faced by students and educators, this project emphasizes the importance of informed interventions and innovative strategies in fostering a resilient and effective learning environment for all stakeholders involved

Stronger Together: Uniting Parents, Educators, and Professionals for Enhanced Social-Emotional

    Get PDF
This Capstone project addresses the crucial issue of inadequate social-emotional learning in elementary schools, focusing on improving access and quality for students. It is essential to tackle this issue because limited access hinders the development of students\u27 social-emotional skills, potentially affecting their long-term success. It is argued that integrating higher-quality social-emotional learning into education is necessary to foster lifelong skills. Three key stakeholders—two parents and one principal—were interviewed to obtain their suggestions for improving social-emotional skills. Analysis of the data revealed three potential action options: hiring more professionals; providing additional professional development for educators; and enhancing parental involvement. Of these, hiring more professionals is proposed as the most effective strategy to elevate the level and quality of social-emotional learning for elementary school students
