The CSUMB Well-Being Compass: A Student Guide
Food insecurity, stemming from a limited awareness of available resources, often challenges new domestic and international students navigating California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB). This can potentially hinder their academic and social integration. The CSUMB Basic Needs department addressed this critical issue through a resource development project, creating and evaluating a comprehensive digital resource guide designed to connect new students with essential food resources and other crucial support services for academic success. This evaluation involved a feedback survey of 32 student staff and faculty across campus. The findings indicated that an overwhelming majority found the guide very or extremely helpful, strongly suggesting the project successfully increased awareness of resources vital for addressing food insecurity and other basic needs. For maximum impact, CSUMB Basic Needs should distribute the guide widely, regularly update it based on feedback, track its usage, and conduct follow-up assessments to improve food security and student well-being, creating a more supportive environment
Impact of Resource Allocation Process on Elementary School Teachers and Students
Public elementary schools are valuable institutions in any given society or a community. Students attend school a few days a week to learn/educate themselves and to be able to create a sustainable future for themselves. With any great school system, there exists quality education for all students. Quality education may look different to everyone, but it usually consists of factors, such as providing a foundation for equity in society, allowing sustainable development goals (SDGs) to be achieved, and breaking cycles of poverty, which are ultimately a basic human right. By having access to high-quality education, students are able to learn crucial life skills as they make their transition from children to adulthood and beyond. It gives students a sense of community and responsibility from a young age which becomes more refined and brings maturity as time goes on. These are the reasons why it is important for all students to have access to high quality education. In addition, a high-quality resource is also provided hand in hand along with high quality of education. Through the use of literature review and surveys with teachers and school districts, the result findings indicated that resource allocation is a key factor towards positive student outcomes and determines the success of each individual student. to bring about quality education for students. This senior capstone research project intends to educate students, teachers, administrators, families, and researchers about the crucial role of allocating the proper resources in schools for students’ academic success
Effects of Bilingual Education Programs on Elementary School Students
This senior capstone research project study examines the effects of bilingual education programs on elementary school students, with a focus on the native Spanish speakers in California. Through the use of literature review and surveys of educators and principals, the result findings revealed that bilingual education programs have affected elementary school students academically, linguistically, and socio-culturally in particular the Dual Language Immersion (DLI) and Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE). The findings also indicated that DLI programs, particularly the 90/10 model enhances bilingualism, biliteracy, and long-term academic achievement, while strengthening students\u27 cultural identity and family connections as well. However, there are challenges for the programs which include teacher shortages, inadequate resources, and societal misconceptions. The study underscores the benefits of bilingual education and calls for increased funding, teacher training, and community outreach to support equitable implementation. By addressing the systemic barriers for the bilingual education program, schools would know how to better serve the diverse student populations and foster inclusive learning environments for bilingual students
[2025 Honorable Mention] Racial Marginalization and Pesticide Exposure in Monterey County
This paper examines the concept of environmental racism in the context of harmful pesticides and their disproportionate use in prominently Hispanic communities. These communities continue to face the consequences of exposure despite their activism. The concept of environmental patriotism, as proposed by Anne Todd in Communicating Environmental Patriotism: A Rhetorical History of the American Environmental Movement (2013), is incompatible with the data that supports the existence of environmental racism. In this piece Todd argues that channeling the pride one feels for their country is an effective way of promoting environmental efforts amongst individual citizens. The data to be presented denies the possibility of this approach, as patriotism becomes a difficult morale to promote when the unequal distribution of environmental hazards exists. Ultimately, this paper argues that when aware of the environmental harm being done to them, communities such as those of the agricultural Salinas Valley are unlikely to ascribe to the theoretical framework of environmental patriotism.https://digitalcommons.csumb.edu/esa_submissions/1170/thumbnail.jp
Computational dataset of cetyl trimethyl ammonium-anion complex structures and simulated infrared spectra
This dataset presents computationally derived geometries and vibrational spectra of cetyl trimethyl ammonium ion pairs formed with three environmentally and chemically relevant anions: bisulfate, nitrate, and methyl sulfonate. Data were obtained using quantum chemical calculations performed using the Gaussian 16 software package, utilizing the ONIOM method at the second-order Møller–Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) level. To account for solvent effects and electrostatic screening, calculations incorporated an implicit solvent environment via the polarizable continuum model (PCM). The dataset includes optimized geometric coordinates, harmonic vibrational frequencies, and simulated infrared (IR) spectra for each cetyl trimethyl ammonium-anion pair. Additional computational details, including input parameters, computational settings, and scripts used for data processing, are provided as supplementary material to ensure complete transparency and reproducibility. Data collection involved initial construction and optimization of the molecular geometries of ion pairs, followed by calculation of vibrational modes at equilibrium. Distance-displacement scans were conducted and the ONIOM total electronic energies and geometries of these non-stationary structures are reported. This comprehensive dataset offers significant reuse potential for researchers investigating surfactant chemistry, computational spectroscopy, environmental chemistry, and related disciplines
Preservation Of Newari Music
This paper explores the origins of the musical traditions of the Newari people from the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal, the instrumental components of Newari music and the current efforts in its preservation that are ongoing in Nepal
Barriers to Hospice Access for the Latino Community
The Latino community in Monterey County faces significant obstacles to accessing hospice care, including language barriers and cultural misunderstandings. Many community members are unfamiliar with available hospice services or hold common misconceptions, such as equating hospice only with dying or abandonment. This capstone project, in partnership with the Central Coast Visiting Nurse Association (VNA), investigated these barriers through interviews conducted at a local senior event. An important outcome of the project was the creation of a bilingual (Spanish and English) resource guide for new Social workers which helps social workers efficiently connect Latino families to appropriate services in their preferred language allowing for more time spent providing direct support. Findings show that culturally tailored education and bilingual resources increase awareness and openness within the Latino community. The project recommends continued development of Spanish- and English-language materials, ongoing bilingual outreach, and collaboration with trusted advocates to improve hospice care access for Latino residents
