Screening cell adhesion molecules for a role in regeneration after pinch injury in Drosophila neurons

    No full text
Dendrites are outgrowths from the cell body, or soma, of neurons. The primary function of dendrites is to receive information from other neurons or surrounding tissues. We use the ddaC Class IV neurons of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster PNS, or peripheral nervous system, to study dendrite regeneration and why dendritic arbors regenerate imperfectly. The interaction between the dendrites and these surrounding tissues are mediated by different proteins and receptors, called cell adhesion molecules (CAM). The study objective is to perform a screen to determine obvious visual differences in dendrite regeneration after downregulating the expression of different CAMs through RNA Interference (RNAi). To induce injury, we perform a pinch injury with forceps. This holistic tissue injury method damages the ddaC neuron along with the surrounding tissue which includes the epidermis, supportive glial cells, and the extracellular matrix (ECM). The findings of this project highlight how the downregulation of CAMs by RNAi can demonstrate the role that CAMs and the surrounding tissues have on the regeneration of dendrites. The Drosophila melanogaster is ideal for studying dendrite regeneration as it shares many genes and biological pathways with humans, the use of the model organism allows for the mirroring of holistic tissue injury, such that is observed in traumatic brain injury in humans.https://digital.library.ncat.edu/honorscollegesymposium25/1018/thumbnail.jp

Improving Stability of Scramjet Combustion via Hydrogen Fuel Injection

    No full text
Supersonic combustion ramjets, also known as scramjets, are a variation of jet engines designed to efficiently operate at speeds around Mach 5 and above. These engines produce great amounts of thrust, however the amount of turbulent energy involved in the combustion process could be inhibiting the engines fullest potential. It is already proven that hydrogen is the optimal fuel for scramjet combustion, with it producing the right amount of thrust while having minimal ignition requirements. However, hydrogens\u27 high reactivity produces instability within the combustion chamber, seen as turbulent waves and excessive hot spots up to 3000 K. Using reduced order modeling, reactions were observed with varying air speeds from Mach 1 to 3. Simulations in Ansys Fluent showed that despite there not being drastic increases in temperature, vorticity and instability rose significantly with an increase in Mach number. Turbulence kinetic energy also increased as Mach number increased, however the paths and reactions stayed fairly the same with only a bit of expansion. As expected, the intensity of the turbulence kinetic energy is highest right at the injection point due to the immediate reaction between air and the liquid hydrogen.https://digital.library.ncat.edu/honorscollegesymposium25/1007/thumbnail.jp

GIS-based Analysis of Flooding Impacts on the Coastal Plains of Neuse River Basin, North Carolina

    No full text
Recurrent flooding of the Neuse River in North Carolina has been severely impacting the socio-economic conditions of the coastal plain in the River Basin. Effective flood forecasting and impact analysis are critical for planning emergency preparedness and mitigation measures. FEMA prepared 100-year return period flood risk maps for most of the study area. To enhance safety, this research focuses on modeling 500-year return period flood, assessing its impacts on human and economy, devising flood evacuation system, and proposing mitigation measures. HEC-RAS and GIS tools were used to conduct the study, with model parameters calibrated and validated using flood maps from FEMA. Flood impacts on the population, public infrastructures and land use were analyzed. Results indicate that over 100,000 acres of land across six counties would be inundated, affecting key infrastructures including interstate highways, major roads, schools and land parcels. A flood evacuation system was analyzed, and an optimized road network and public shelters like hospitals and schools are proposed for emergency response. To mitigate impacts, the study recommends community awareness programs, flood protection infrastructure, and nature-based solutions. The study demonstrates that integrating flood hydrodynamic modeling with spatial analysis provide effective solutions for mitigating flood risks and minimizing socio-economic impacts.https://digital.library.ncat.edu/gradresearchsymposium25/1105/thumbnail.jp
