High Incidence of Colonization with Multiple Morphologically Distinct Strains of Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria in a Cohort of Severely Malnourished Children in Malawi
This study investigates the prevalence and characteristics of ceftriaxone-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRO-E) in malnourished children in Malawi, focusing on multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Enterobacter species. CRO-E pose significant health risks, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, where limited access to carbapenems results in resistance to the most potent available antibiotics. Given the region\u27s high rates of childhood malnutrition, this research explores the increased risk of CRO-E intestinal colonization in malnourished patients. The study hypothesizes that colonization will be predominantly driven by one morphologically distinct strain of CRO-E within this population, contributing to our understanding of antimicrobial resistance in resource-limited settings.https://digital.library.ncat.edu/undergraduate-research-posters/1002/thumbnail.jp

I’m Proud of You; Motivating Black Boys Toward Success
Poster presented at the International Conference on Urban Education in Cancun, Mexico
This research poster examined how negative and positive words impact emotional and mental identity in young black boys. The researcher examined literature that focused on participants’ personal anecdotes to understand the realities their young black boys faced, and some literature assessed the science behind the impact of word choice. People’s decisions and identities can all be affected by the language we consume daily. To survive, black males must develop an identity in a world where they are simultaneously loved and hated, where they are consuming the positive and negative stereotypes, perceptions and unbeknownst to them the words (Cooper, 2013; Stevenson, 1997). This article analysis is based on data from multiple research papers that investigated the power of words and examined the varying realities and hurdles young black boys face and manage from birth.https://digital.library.ncat.edu/undergraduate-research-posters/1015/thumbnail.jp
