Development of CRISPR-Integrated Amplification-by-Polymerization for Detection of Salmonella

    No full text
Salmonella is listed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as one of the most common foodborne pathogens and it is a bacterium to trigger symptomatic infections with experiencing diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Genomic DNA from Salmonella as a target analyte can be used for assay development, verification, and validation in monitoring Salmonella contamination to secure food and food supply chain safety. The technology of Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR) is a gene editing tool acting as precise molecular scissors to cut a target sequence. He et al. developed an “Amplification-by-Polymerization (AbP)” in biosensing technique based on effective mass growth upon biomolecular recognition using reversible-deactivation radical polymerization reactions and successfully demonstrated direct visualization of DNA, protein, and other biomarkers via AbP processes. This interdisciplinary collaborative research is aimed at developing a novel CRISPR-integrated Amplification-by-Polymerization method to detect Salmonella for human health and food safety protection in a CRISPR-Cas12a and biosensing-based, rapid, sensitive, label-free, PCR-free, and detector-free fashion.https://digital.library.ncat.edu/honorscollegesymposium25/1021/thumbnail.jp

Racial Discrimination, Social Support, and Perceived Qualification Differences: Analyzing The Impacts on Work-Related Stress and The Mental Health of Black Women

    No full text
Through this study, this research looks at how racial discrimination at work that is perceived, has impacts on the mental health of Black women. We tend to focus on major issues such as stress, anxiety, and depression. The main ideas we will be exploring include: 1. Facing racial discrimination at work is stressful. Black women who deal with this can experience more psychological stress, 2. Having access to a support system or mentorship at work can help lessen the bad effects of work-related stress on Black women\u27s health, and 3. When Black women see themselves as inferior to their white counterparts, it can make mental health issues worse, leading to more consistent anxiety and depression. Moreover, we are examining factors such as racial bias, access to support, and how Black women are viewed in the workplace qualification wise. Additionally, these factors are the independent variables of the research. The outcomes we’re researching and looking at are how Black women feel about work stress, their mental health (factors like stress and anxiety), and how fair they think their workplace is. To gather our information, we will use a variety of scales and surveys that are tested for reliability. Overall, our goal is to have a better understanding on how workplace interactions, especially those surrounding race, impact Black women\u27s mental health. Also, we want to bring awareness to and highlight how important establishing support systems and perceptions of fairness are.https://digital.library.ncat.edu/honorscollegesymposium25/1008/thumbnail.jp

Incorporating Ru into TiO2 to Enhance Hydrogen Generation in Visible Light

    No full text
The significant role that fossil fuels have played in energy utilization cannot be underestimated. However, owing to the non-renewable and CO2 emission associated to its usage has paved a way for a search for a more renewable and environmentally unfriendly energy sources of which hydrogen energy identified as a potential target. A highly porous TiO2-RuO2 heterogenous solvothermally engineered photocatalyst revealed how varying synthesis conditions can contribute to the modification of TiO2 towards effective photocatalytic water splitting in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Characterization techniques such as XRD, SEM, TEM, UV-Vis DRS, and electrochemical analysis revealed that TiO2-RuO2-20 exhibited reduced band gap, improved light absorption capability, lower electron-hole recombination rate, lower solution resistance which collectively contributed to effective photocatalytic activity. In addition, a high surface area and molg-1h-1 of hydrogen gas mesoporous nature contributed to 1794.8 molg-1h-1) and the commercially Compared to the pristine RuO2 (21.9 molg-1h-1), the TiO2-RuO2-20 sample produced available TiO2 (246.4 yield that is almost 81 times and 7 times respectively. This therefore proves the effectiveness of the solvothermal method and the ruthenium dioxide in modulating the photocatalytic properties of TiO2 photocatalyst for photocatalytic water splitting in visible light.https://digital.library.ncat.edu/gradresearchsymposium25/1098/thumbnail.jp
