A Spatial-Temporal Attention Deep Reinforcement, A Smart HVAC Control System for Energy Savings and Comfort

    No full text
Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems play a vital role in maintaining indoor comfort but are among the largest energy consumers in buildings. Traditional HVAC controllers often operate inefficiently, failing to adapt to changing conditions such as weather variations, occupancy shifts, and electricity pricing. To address this, we introduce STA-DRL (Spatial-Temporal Attention Deep Reinforcement Learning), a framework designed to optimize HVAC performance in multi-zone buildings. STA-DRL combines convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to model heat transfer between rooms, long short-term memory (LSTM) networks to capture time-dependent factors, and an attention mechanism to prioritize energy distribution based on occupancy and cost fluctuations. This allows real-time adjustments to HVAC setpoints, improving efficiency while maintaining occupant comfort. By dynamically balancing energy use and comfort, STA-DRL offers a scalable solution for smart energy management, paving the way for more sustainable and cost-effective building automation. Future research will focus on real-world implementation and integration with smart infrastructurehttps://digital.library.ncat.edu/gradresearchsymposium25/1159/thumbnail.jp

A Narrative Analysis of Black Women C-suite Leader\u27s Career Success in STEM

    No full text
This qualitative narrative study investigates the experiences of Black women who have successfully advanced to C-suite leadership positions in STEM organizations. Grounded in Social Cognitive Career Theory and Intersectionality Theory, it explores how intersecting identities, environmental factors, and personal strategies shape their career trajectories. The research aims to identify effective strategies, support systems, and organizational practices that facilitate their career advancement. By examining these narratives, this study seeks to inform organizational practices and policies that promote more inclusive leadership pathways for Black women in STEM, ultimately enhancing representation in these fields.https://digital.library.ncat.edu/gradresearchsymposium25/1172/thumbnail.jp

Assessing the Viability of Conventional Agriculture Practices within Solar Farm Environments

    No full text
The fundamental aim of this review is to inform readers about the active implementation of Agrivoltaics in the United States and various other nations. This innovative approach within traditional farming practices is proving its sustainability and potential profitability through successful practical applications. Its viability depends on the region, the specific crops cultivated, or the animals raised on the farm. Additionally, there is widespread scientific agreement that the acceleration of human-induced climate change constitutes a crucial global challenge, evident in escalating temperatures, rising sea levels, and the occurrence of catastrophic extreme weather events. These new practices could assist in reducing agricultural effects on greenhouse gas emissions in addition to other efforts that are currently underway. Transitioning from fossil fuels to solar energy offers a solution to combat climate change, but it is important to acknowledge that solar energy development presents its own set of challenges. While it is possible to mitigate many of the adverse environmental effects associated with solar energy development, some of the suggested mitigation techniques may be easier said than done. The goal of this report is to explore whether ground-mounted solar development on agricultural land can be made compatible with protecting land for food, feed, and fiber production, improving soil health, and increasing farm operation profitability (Makhijani, 2021)https://digital.library.ncat.edu/gradresearchsymposium25/1176/thumbnail.jp
