Advanced High-Resolution Imaging and Spectroscopy of NGC 2770, Messier 5, and the Orion Nebula
Poster presented at the Team Up Conference in Washington, DC
This project focuses on imaging and analyzing NGC 2770, Messier 5, and Orion Nebulae, using the Perkin’s Telescope at the Perkin’s Telescope Observatory(PTO). These three distinct celestial objects are being captured to explore their structural and physical properties using advanced imaging techniques. In Flagstaff, Arizona at PTO, I used PRISM (Perkin’s ReImaging SysteM) and Mimir to perform imaging and spectroscopy. The project aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of cosmic phenomena.. Results from this research provide valuable insights into the behavior of matter on both stellar and galactic scales, enriching our comprehension of the universe\u27s underlying processes.https://digital.library.ncat.edu/undergraduate-research-posters/1008/thumbnail.jp

The Negative Effects of Urban Sprawl
This poster explores the impact of urban sprawl, characterized by low-density development, reliance on single-occupancy vehicles, and disorganized urban planning. It examines how urban sprawl leads to geographic separation of essential locations, traffic congestion, and environmental degradation. Through a survey of 250 participants, the study analyzes how commuting challenges, such as longer distances and traffic congestion, affect workers\u27 decisions, with questions focusing on job changes due to commute difficulties. The research also highlights the economic costs of urban sprawl, including lost labor time and increased commuting costs, which result in substantial financial losses for both individuals and businesses. The findings provide insight into whether people are significantly impacted by urban sprawl and its consequences.https://digital.library.ncat.edu/undergraduate-research-posters/1012/thumbnail.jp
Theory to Practice: Applications for Transforming School Violence and Maladaptive Behaviors in Black and Latino Males
Poster presented at the International Conference on Urban Education in Cancun, Mexico
Motivated by the need to counter negative social influences and maladaptive behaviors, this study aims to address the impact of living with and experiencing violence in schools. While a vast body of literature discusses the prevalence and consequences of school violence, there is a significant lack of solution-oriented research that provides actionable strategies for effectively addressing and preventing these issues.
Guided by the question of whether collaborative school environments reduce maladaptive behaviors in Black and Latino male students, this study bridges theory and practice in diverse high school settings. Using an educational equity framework and evidence-based interventions, it aims to offer insights that could reshape practices and policies on school violence, supporting historically marginalized student populations.https://digital.library.ncat.edu/undergraduate-research-posters/1016/thumbnail.jp
Which Drug Inhibits H3K27me3 Better in Human Melanoma Cells?
Poster presented at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Scientists (ABRCMS) in Pittsburgh, PA.
Metastatic cancer cells move through tight junctions smaller than their own nucleus, in order to reach a secondary site. Exerting force on the cell\u27s nucleus can often cause changes in the 3D genome structure, gene transcription, and the addition of epigenetic marks. Previous findings have classified A375 cells that have undergone ten rounds of constricted migration as Bottom-10 cells and those that have not as Parental cells. During constricted migration, the A375 cell line is marked with H3K27me3. Previous data suggests that this histone is a major component of the chromatin compartment switches and gene expression of Bottom-10 cells following constricted migration. H3K27me3 is more expressed in Bottom-10 cells in downregulated gene expression and during shifts from the active (euchromatin) to inactive (heterochromatin) compartment. Within this project, we aim to understand the impact of H3K27me3 on chromatin compartment switches and transcriptional differences between parental and Bottom-10 A375 cells through the use of an H3K27me3-specific inhibitor. The enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2), which is responsible for the methylation of H3K27me3, was inhibited using the drugs UNC1999 and EPZ005687. During constricted migration, histones typically lose acetylation marks and gain methylation marks to prevent transcription. However, the inhibition of EZH2 causes the removal of methylation marks to allow transcription. To analyze the impact of the epigenetic mark, H3K27me3, following its inhibition, immunofluorescent staining and imaging procedures were used to identify H3K27me3 signals within the cells.https://digital.library.ncat.edu/undergraduate-research-posters/1006/thumbnail.jp
