The Application of the Phillips Curve in Developed and Developing Countries
Get PDFThis research utilizes data drawn from multiple government sources regarding unemployment, consumer price index (CPI), GDP, and industrial productivity from Colombia, Japan, and the United States. The research seeks to identify common trends and characteristics of the Phillips curve by applying the Phillips curve to both developed economies, like the United States and Japan, and also developing countries like Colombia. The results suggest that while there are similarities within economies, like the inflation and unemployment comovement in the United States, each economy must be viewed and analyzed independently. There were no findings indicating that there are common differences of Phillips curve when categorized by the stage of development of a particular economy. The findings indicate that the Phillips curve still exists in certain economies, and does not in others; additionally, they indicate that the inverse correlation between inflation and unemployment continues to weaken
Monetary Policy and Housing Market in China
Get PDFThis paper studies the interaction effects between monetary policy actions and house price changes in China. I focus on the impact of M2 money supply on house prices in Beijing, the capital of China. A VAR model is constructed and shows that an M2 money supply shock has a significant positive impact on Beijing house prices from the fifth to the ninth month, whereas a house price shock has no significant impact on M2 money supply. To verify whether the impact of money supply is robust in different Chinese cities, I develop another VAR model to observe the housing market in Shenzhen, a first-tier city in southern China. The results show that an M2 money supply shock has only a small significant positive impact on Shenzhen house prices at one month, suggesting that the effect of money supply can vary due to institutional differences
Does Corruptin Affect Productivity in Terms of Growth in Brazil?
Get PDFThis paper explores the relationship between the corruption that occurs in Brazil and its effect on productivity in terms of economic growth. While there are multiple facets of corruption, currently, the only measure of corruption is Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index (CPI). This index is measured from 0, most corrupt, to 10, least corrupt. The productivity of Brazil in terms of economic growth will be measured using GDP per capita. My hypothesis is that the corrupt acts that occur in Brazil have a direct negative influence on the productivity of Brazil. Mainly, this is through the rent seekers theory that political influencers in Brazil use or take resources for their personal gain instead of for the good of the people without adding any sort of benefit for the people. Cryptocurrency-Remittance Transfers Futuristic Technologies & Poverty Alleviation
Get PDFThe methodologies used to transfer remittances to Sub-Saharan Africa are currently predisposing their citizens to be dealt unethically large surcharges which are relatively greater than any other location in the world. These African nation\u27s average remittance transaction fees were greater than 13% in 2006 and could become the greatest benefactor if a more efficient methodology of remittance currency transferring were to be created. For instance, if Sub-Saharan African citizens began to utilize cryptocurrencies instead of standard transfer companies like Western Union and MoneyGram; transfer fees could be reduced to as little as (.025%) which would directly send more funds to the people that need it the most. The methodologies within this paper consist of a semi-log poverty regression that utilized an econometric structure similar to the previous literature. In addition to previous regression analyses conducted by Gupta (2009), Giuliano (2008), Adams & Page (2005), and Ravallion (1997); I attempt to include variables in attempt to determine the role that technological integration has towards poverty mitigation. My econometric semi log regression analyzes 18 nations with Africa. These nations were specifically chosen in reference to their relatively large association with remittance transfers. Within this analysis of poverty within Sub Saharan Africa, a strong correlation between remittance transactions and poverty reduction is found. More specifically, the results also suggest that remittances transactions directly assist the most impoverished citizens within a nation most efficiently and that an increased technological infrastructure played a significant role within poverty mitigation. These conclusions should further incentives developing nations across the world to investigate how cryptocurrencies could effectively mitigate poverty

Shall We Chat? A Statistical Case Study of Chat Reference Utilization
Get PDFPurposeThis paper aims to evaluate the performance of a chat reference service implemented at an academic library in a private liberal arts college by gauging its impact on other forms of reference service in terms of usage volume, with a focus on research-related face-to-face reference questions. Design/methodology/approach Two statistical methods are used, namely, the difference-in-differences method and a simple moving average time series analysis, to analyze both the short-term and long-term impact brought by chat reference. Findings This study finds that the usage volume of the traditional face-to-face reference is significantly affected by chat reference in its first service year. The long-term analysis suggests that chat reference volume displays a significant declining trend (−2.06 per cent academic month) since its implementation. Yet, its usage volume relative to other reference services remains stable over time. Originality/value The findings in this case study will be of value to libraries with similar scale and institutional features that are also interested in assessing their chat reference service. In addition, this paper is the first to apply the difference-in-differences approach in the field of library science, and the two statistical methods adopted in this case study can be readily adapted and applied to other similar volume-based library assessment projects
