Photochemistry of Atmospheric Particles
No full textGiven the considerable interest in aerosol particles in the atmosphere as these particles play a key role in health, climate, and chemistry, there is an outstanding need for fundamental molecular studies of a wide range of aerosol processes. In the past, there has been a tremendous amount of interest in heterogeneous atmospheric chemistry, that is, reactions that are mediated by liquid or solid aerosol particles. Given the demonstrated importance of heterogeneous thermal chemistry in the atmosphere, it is surprising how little attention has been directed toward the photochemistry of atmospheric particles, that is, reactions initiated or significantly enhanced with light. This section focuses on the photochemistry of atmospheric particles. An important aspect of this is to develop a molecular scale level understanding of photochemistry in the aerosol environment and on surfaces, including details of the modifications to ground and excited electronic states of surface bound species and the ramifications for the product branching ratio
Religious Mobility in the United States: The Effects of Income and Economic Mobility on Religious Conversion
Get PDFWhy do people switch religions? Under the theoretical framework of interactionism theory of conversion, which posits that the interplay between active, negotiated, and socially constructed aspects of human behavior and different aspects of social context lead to religious conversion, I propose that economic mobility and income affect whether or not one chooses to switch religions from the one in which they were raised. I rely on the 2016 General Social Survey (GSS) that was administered to 2,867 randomly selected adults living in households in the United States in 2016. I analyze data from a subset of 1,068 married respondents to examine the effects of economic mobility, income, exogamy, geographic mobility, education, race, age, and sex on religious mobility and apostasy. There are no significant correlations between economic mobility and income with religious mobility or apostasy. The only significant predictor of religious mobility and apostasy is exogamy. Respondents who have married outside of the religion in which they were raised are more likely to be religiously mobile or abandon religion altogether than those who are endogamous. Additionally, older respondents are less likely to abandon religion than younger respondents. My hypothesis is not supported. However, the results support interactionism theory of conversion as exogamy is a significant predictor of religious mobility. These results confirm that the institution of marriage plays a significant role in whether or not someone converts religions; furthermore, the bonds of marriage outweigh one’s bond to the religion in which they were raised

Get PDFHorizontal Merger Antitrust Enforcement at the DOJ: A Closer Look From 2005-2015
Get PDFI manually collect data on all horizontal merger cases litigated by the Department of Justice (DOJ) between 2005-2015 from the DOJ\u27s website by reading the Complaint, Competitive Impact Statement, and Final Judgment for a total of 94 cases. I analyze how horizontal merger antitrust enforcement is impacted by the 2008 Great Recession and the enactment of the 2010 Horizontal Merger Guideline Revision. The total number of mergers litigated by the DOJ decreases from 2008-9 corresponding to the nadir of the Great Recession. The pro-interventionist 2010 Guidelines lead to an increase in merger litigation following its enactment. I use a linear regression to evaluate which factors impact the outcome of the cases following the institution of the Guidelines. I find that when the judge is appointed by a democratic president, the merger is more likely to be blocked, consistent with a pro-enforcement, democratic ideology. Additionally, as the number of anticompetitive reasons against merging increases, the DOJ (plaintiff) is more likely to win. The use of the Hypothetical Monopolist Test (HMT) increases following 2010, and is consisted with the Guidelines’ emphasis on the use of various economic formulas. However, I did not see an increase in the use of other economic formulas. Based on the rationale cited in the Competitive Impact Statement by the DOJ, antitrust litigation appears nonuniform and only minimally effected by the 2010 Guidelines

His engaged, long-term approach to complex issues captures informed, authentic narratives that help educate the public and guide social and environmental change. Recent projects include a global survey of conservation enterprises and a campaign for the protection of 10 million hectares in the Amazon for indigenous people in isolation and initial contact. He has lectured and led workshops on cause-driven photography at Anderson Ranch, Telluride Photo Festival, Harvard, Yale, Duke, Nevada Musuem of Art, San Francisco Art Institute, Mountainfilm, and many more. Jason is a Senior Fellow in the International League of Conservation Photographers, a Senior Fellow at Wake Forest University’s Center for Energy, Environment, and Sustainability, and for 8 years also worked as photography editor for Orion magazine.
