EFFECTS OF CONQUEST: A FANTASY AND A REALITY
Ibn-e-Khaldun wrote of the impact of conquest on the psychology of the conquered. This can be made much more vivid by thinking about a possible complete conquest of Iraq by the USA. This fantasy serves to illuminate the current reality of how our perceptions of the world have been shaped by our history of having been colonized. These distorted perceptions form a major obstacle towards progress in desired directions
TAKING YOU THROUGH THE BISCUIT INDUSTRY
Perhaps one of the most underrated, least talked about and low thrill industry, the biscuit business has been making waves for the last few years!Biscuits eating habit had been inculcated into the Pakistani frame work with ‘sipping of tea’ post British Raj. The biscuit, a natural complement during evening tea or in large receptions and parties has been a necessity at least in the upper income tier. The lower tier though not as heavy in consumption could not abstain (being Pakistanis’ with a sweet tooth) and with baking being a relatively easy concept (eating fresh biscuits being a necessity), the industry as expected started growing at a fast pace. This led to the sprouting of the unbranded neighborhood bakeries that made small quantities of large variety of irresistible snacks
RESEARCH ABSTRACTS THE LIVING DEATH OF WEST EUROPEAN DEMOCRACY?
This paper examines the transformation of democratic governance in Western Europe. It argues that the undeniable decline in democratic participating processes does not constitute a threat to capitalist hegemony. Citizens and elites are withdrawing from election and parties because they are satisfied with the professionalization of politics and the entertainment content of spectator democracy. Capitalist governance is threatened by an extra systemic force in Europe and not by a decline in popular democratic participation

POSTMODERNISM: A REACTION TO THE TERRORISM OF THE MODERNIST PHILOSOPHICAL THOUGHT
This paper is the concluding part of a series of two papers exploring and explaining the concept of postmodernism. The approach adopted for examining the postmodern phenomenon was to picture it as a collage incorporating three distinct but interrelated concepts/themes: one, postmodernism as an epoch; two, postmodernism as a signifier of the problematical features or the limits of modernity; and three, postmodernism as a reaction to the terrorism of the modernist philosophical thought. The first two of these were discussed in the paper published in the pervious issue of the Market Forces. This paper involves an examination of the third theme: postmodernism as a reaction to the terrorism of the modernist philosophical thought which has been described as positivistic, technocentric, and rationalistic, and the belief in linear progress, absolute truths, the rational planning of ideal social orders, and the standardization of knowledge and production. The approach adopted for this paper involves the use of the term ‘post’ as a counter concept and a broad-gauged cultural and intellectual movement that is re-conceptualizing the way we experience and understand the world around us. It involves a re-examination of eight areas of our knowledge base that form the basis of our conceptual foundations. These are: the concept of truth; the concept of theory; the concept of representation; the concept and the relationship between the author, the text, and the reader; the concept of subject; the problematic of disciplinary research; the concept of space; and the concept of history. The discussion involves an examination of the normally accepted definitions of these concepts and the counter-concepts or the alternative definitions offered within the realm of postmodern philosophical thought. Investigation into the counter-concepts is aimed as understanding how postmodernism represents a departure in our way of thinking regarding the best strategy for confronting the problems of the new epoch - the postmodern epoch
MARKETING MIX AND THE BRAND REPUTATION OF NOKIA
Pakistan’s mobile phone market is growing very fast. The most selling brand in the market is Nokia. A hypothesis was developed that the reputation of a brand is a source of demand and the competitively superior quality image justifies a premium price. In this survey we assessed the reasons for preference of this brand based on established parameters of marketing mix (the 4 Ps). The objective of this study was to measure the extent of preference of these parameters. For this purpose a questionnaire was developed and administered to 240 respondents. The alternate hypothesis that at least one of the predictor variables would have a linear relationship with the dependent variable brand reputation was accepted. R² is 0.53, which indicates that about 53% of the variation on the dependent variable is explained by the predictor variable, which is significantly moderate. Among all the independent variables the slope for the product quality and promotion (advertising & communication) were higher than the rest.Regression coefficients for product quality and promotion (advertising & communication) were 0.95 and 0.85 respectively. This means that an increase in one rating (on the scale of five to one) of product quality and promotion (advertising & communication) would cause brand reputation to increase by 0.95 and 0.85 rating respectively
