This seems like a remote possibilityconsidering the country’s economic, politi cal and investment climate. The present state oflawlessness refl ects that youth have adopted a path of anarchy to sustain themselves. A solution to this problem is imperati ve. Nature has created a balance in demographic distributi onsuch that as there are regions with populati on explosion, so there are regions with shrinkingpopulati on. Our survival lies in identi fying countries where workforce dilemma exists andfabricati ng a workforce in line with their requirements. Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis mustassume a proacti ve role of preparing guidelines for labor exports and guide other ministriesto chart plans to materialize this strategy. Remitt ances from Pakistanis abroad have been themain stay of of its economic stability however; its use is yet to be opti mized. It is, therefore, essenti al for the economy to move from low value occupati ons to higher end occupati ons. Thislong-term strategy is realisti c subject to cooperati on among all stakeholders

Exchange Rate Movements: External Debt Problems in Nigeria 1980-2010

    Get PDF
Copious of arguments for debt contractions have been put forward especially in favour of the need for developing countries to attain economic growth. This arises as a result of inad¬equate savings coupled with the inability of the developing countries to operate within the stipulated debt limit. As such the debts mount and the burden keeps rising. The mounting debt is more complicated when it is externally sourced as it requires foreign exchange for its redemption. Unfortunately the fluctuation in the exchange rate further inhibits the payment of interest that eventually adds more to the initial principal amount borrowed.Observing the Nigeria debt portfolio and its exchange rate movements for some years, the latter's impact has continued to influence the former negatively. This paper thus seeks to use co- integration technique to test for the extent of their relationship from 1980 to 2010.By so doing, the exchange rate influences the external debt to a greater extent and thus requires that Nigeria must source for other means of financing its growth and development. Further to this, the country should ensure a more conducive macroeconomic environment to¬wards attaining a stable exchange rate

Our robust econometric modelling reveals anomalous patterns in stock returns around the turn of the year. The anomaly observed in this study, however, was unlikely to represent lucrative arbitrage opportunities at the time  essentially because abnormal returns were not large enough to offset transactions costs.
