The Effect Of Diet Composition On Weight Gain in Obese, Type 2 Diabetes Patients Receiving Intensive Insulin Therapy
This study was conducted to contribute to the limiting existing body of literature about diet and prevention of weight gain when administering intensive insulin therapy. The effects of a high- monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) diet compared with a conventional diabetic diet have not been studied in insulin treated patients. A growing body of evidence assessed that diets rich in high-MUFA foods had similar glycemic results, as do low-fat, high carbohydrate diets. However, a high-MUFA diet did not raise triglycerides as suspected. Ros (2003) stated that high-MUFA energy controlled diets do not promote weight gain and are more acceptable for weight loss and/or maintenance. A MUFA diet can be used as an alternate to the conventional American Diabetic Association (ADA) diet when managing obese type 2 diabetes patients treated with intensive insulin therapy. Dietary restriction to 1600 calories in diabetes patients on intensive insulin therapy decreased the A1C value by 1.3 points in the ADA group and 1.5 points in the MUFA group without weight gain and without additional insulin required. In conclusion the total calorie count was more important for preventing weight gain and reducing the A1C in patients on intensive insulin therapy than was dietary composition
A Survey Of Career Pathways Of Engineering Deans In The United States: Strategies For Leadership Development
The career pathways of deans in higher education seem to follow the traditional model in academia from a senior faculty position and/or department chair. This however may be different from deans in engineering education. The goal of this survey research is to assess the career paths of current Deans of Colleges/Schools of Engineering in the United States. The survey discovered that about two thirds follow the normative (traditional) career path for deans, suggest leadership attributes of good communication and fiscal management experiences are the most important, and indicate current and future challenges of fundraising and faculty development are critical issues in higher education.
Trusted Supply Chains: Surveying Competitive Value Of The Cloud
Cloud computing has become a force multiplier for organizations as they realize the benefit from the shared computing platforms and services offered by cloud computing. Providers market shared computing platforms and services because of their convenience, dynamism, elasticity, and scalability to meet the growing demands of organizations, specifically in widespread supply chain networks. Yet, the issuance of trust has become a concern in the cloud web as cloud computing service technologies advance faster than measures to secure it. This research presents a framework to determine which specific supply chain functions can derive the most value from cloud capabilities and to understand how to leverage these technologies strategically to develop a competitive advantage. It proposes a strategic integration of cloud functionalities to create profitable supply chain network partnerships and to improve the processes, quality and innovation potential in the overall Supply Chain Management (SCM), while maintaining a trusted cloud environment
Shadow Banking In The United States And China :What Are The Risks?
This paper addresses the concern the authors have regarding the speculative nature of shadow banking in the United States and China in particular. There appears to be ample evidence that shadow banking in the United States was a major contributor to the speculation that led up to the 2008 - 2010 financial crisis. The same type of speculation was also responsible for the U.S. stock market collapse of 1929. During the 1930’s the Glass-Steagall Act was enacted to address the potential conflict of interest between commercial and investment banking activities. This Act was altered in the 1990’s by a majority vote in Congress. Some believe that this partial gutting of the Glass-Steagall Act contributed to America’s unregulated shadow banking activities and real estate speculation that followed. At present China’s shadow banking sector is following a similar speculative path that the United States did about seven years ago. A difference is that China’s commercial and shadow banking systems are absent of many of the mechanisms that allowed the U.S. to regulate its way out of America’s financial crisis. This paper compares past and current U.S. and Chinese shadow banking activities and draws conclusions relative to certain sectors in the Chinese economy that are overheated and primed for economic difficulties that could have global implications

Teaching Civics And Instilling Democratic Values In Israeli High School Students: The Duality Of National And Universal Aspects
Civic studies in Israel and elsewhere are unlike any other school subject. This course of study has a higher purpose – to transform students into good citizens. In contrast to other core subjects, civics, in essence, strives to realize ethical goals. While other subjects perceive the instilling of values as a secondary outcome, in civics the ultimate goal is to teach values. In Israel, civic studies are currently a compulsory subject for high school students and they are required to learn, know, and understand essential values, principles, and characteristics of Jewish Israeli democracy (since Israel is defined as a Jewish Democratic State). The operational objective of this process is to teach good citizenship and proper involvement in public life. In the current study, the authors examined to what degree students assimilate these values in practice. For this purpose, the authors administered a questionnaire measuring views on values. It consisted of 16 items on the significance of various values, ranging from the national to the universal. The questionnaire was administered to over 1,300 students at public high schools. In addition, the authors also administered the questionnaire to about 260 teenagers active in a youth movement, with the aim of comparing the value mix of the two populations. Research findings indicated that both groups placed universal values highest, followed by values of self-realization, Zionism, and Judaism, respectively. Research conclusions show a compatibility between the significance accorded to these values in the curriculum and the significance attributed to them by students
English Related Difficulties Experienced By Turkish Students Studying In A Dual Diploma ELT Program In The U.S.A.
The purpose of this study was to investigate English language related difficulties experienced by 30 Turkish dual diploma students studying in an ELT (English Language Teaching) program established between a Turkish and an American university, and to see the effects of those difficulties on the students’ adjustment process in the U.S.A. The data of the study were collected through a 60-item questionnaire designed by the researcher and analyzed by using multiple regression analysis, paired-samples t-test, independent-samples t-test, and correlation coefficients. The results of the study indicated that students of this program experience English related difficulties at a moderate level; they experience more English related difficulties in their academic life as compared to their social life; and writing and speaking in academic settings are the most problematic skills for them
How Mobile Devices Affect Students According To Teachers' Beliefs
The purpose of this study is to examine teachers' beliefs concerning the effects on students using mobile devices, and to determine whether these beliefs vary according to the demographic characteristics and Internet usage purposes. For this purpose, a demographic information questionnaire and the scale developed by Diker Coskun & Kizilkaya Cumaoglu (2013) were revised with validity and reliability studies and utilized on teachers (N=200). In total, the scale has three dimensions (with a total of 15 items). These are social effects (9 items), psychological effects (3 items), and learning-related effects (3 items). According to the results of the study, teachers believe that students are affected by mobile devices on all three dimensions of the scale (social, psychological, and learning dimensions). The most striking finding of the study is related to the learning dimension of the beliefs concerning mobile devices scale. In every Internet usage purpose examined within the study, it was determined that the teachers' beliefs concerning the "learning" dimension are always more positive than those that do not use the Internet for any given purpose
Using A Digital Planetarium For Teaching Seasons To Undergraduates
Computer-generated simulations and visualizations in digital planetariums have the potential to bridge the comprehension gap in astronomy education. Concepts involving three-dimensional spatial relationships can be difficult for the layperson to understand, since much of the traditional teaching materials used in astronomy education remain two-dimensional in nature. We study the student performance after viewing visualizations in an immersive theater and in non-immersive classrooms for the topic of seasons in an introductory undergraduate astronomy course. Using weekly multiple-choice quizzes to gauge student learning, comparison of curriculum tests taken immediately after instruction and pre-instruction quizzes show a significant difference in the results of students who viewed visualizations in the planetarium versus their counterparts who viewed non-immersive content in their classrooms, and those in the control group that saw no visualizations whatsoever. These results suggest that the immersive visuals help by freeing up cognitive resources that can be devoted to learning, while visualizations shown in the classroom may be an intrinsically inferior experience for students
Prior Knowledge Base Of Constellations And Bright Stars Among Non-Science Majoring Undergraduates And 14-15 Year Old Students
As part of an effort to improve students’ knowledge of constellations and bright stars in an introductory level descriptive astronomy survey course, we measured the baseline knowledge that students bring to the class and how their score evolve over the course of the semester. This baseline is needed by the broader astronomy education research community for future comparisons about which strategies and environments are the best for learning the stars and constellations. As a comparison group, we also examined the baseline knowledge of 14-15 year old, 9th grade students from the United States. 664 university students averaged 2.04±0.08 on a constellation knowledge survey, while 46 additional students averaged higher at 8.23±0.23. The large, lower scoring group is found to have the same knowledge level as the 14-15 year old 9th grade students which scored 1.79±0.13. The constellations most often identified correctly were Orion and Ursa Major. For the star portion of the survey, which was only given to the university students, we found essentially no statistically significant prior knowledge for the 17 brightest stars surveyed. The average score for the stars was 1.05±0.05, as expected for guessing, although Polaris and Betelgeuse are labeled correctly more often than any other stars
