Questioning The Fidelity Of The Next Generation Science Standards For Astronomy And Space Sciences Education
Get PDFAlthough the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are not federally mandated national standards or performance expectations for K-12 schools in the United States, they stand poised to become a de facto national science and education policy, as state governments, publishers of curriculum materials, and assessment providers across the country consider adopting them. In order to facilitate national buy-in and adoptions, Achieve, Inc., the non-profit corporation awarded the contract for writing the NGSS, has repeatedly asserted the development of the Standards to be a state-driven and transparent process, in which the scientific content is taken "verbatim", from the 2011 NRC report, Frameworks for K-12 Science Education: Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Core Ideas. This paper reports on an independently conducted fidelity check within the content domain of astronomy and the space sciences, conducted to determine the extent to which the NGSS science content is guided by the Frameworks, and the extent to which any changes have altered the scientific intent of that document. The side-by-side, two-document comparative analysis indicates that the science of the NGSS is significantly different from the Frameworks. Further, the alterations in the science represent a lack of fidelity, in that they have altered the parameters of the science and the instructional exposure (e.g., timing and emphasis). As a result the NGSS are now poised to interfere with widely desired science education reform and improvement. This unexpected finding affords scientists, educators, and professional societies with an opportunity, if not a professional obligation, to engage in positively impacting the quality of science education by conducting independent fidelity checks across other disciplines. This could provide a much needed formal support and guidance to schools, teachers, curriculum developers, and assessment providers

Systematizing Web Search Through A Meta-Cognitive, Systems-Based, Information Structuring Model (McSIS)
Get PDFThis paper proposes a meta-cognitive, systems-based, information structuring model (McSIS) to systematize online information search behavior based on literature review of information-seeking models. The General Systems Theory’s (GST) prepositions serve as its framework. Factors influencing information-seekers, such as the individual learning styles of Field Independence and Field Dependence (FI/FD); Holist, Serialist (H/S), and Problem-Focused vs. Emotion-Focused (PF/EF) problem-solving approaches, and individual or personal domain knowledge, are incorporated in the model. Patient Centered Medical Home: Creating A Blueprint For Quality Healthcare Through Illustrative Simulation
Get PDFThe advent of healthcare reform in the U.S. presents an unprecedented challenge to academic institutions that are striving to prepare a workforce to interact with individuals needing care in a variety of new practice settings. Patient-centered care is a core objective of these evolving settings which enhance access to a variety professionals and services in one location. This study was conducted over a period of three years and describes how illustrative simulation can be employed as a learning intervention to prepare graduate students for the expanded scope of practice necessary to function in the Patient Centered Medical Home healthcare delivery setting. The authors’ evaluation revealed that doctor of nursing practice students’ perceived illustrative simulation strengthened their understanding of: (a) the Institute of Medicine Core Competencies for a New Vision for Health Professionals, (b) the four competency domains identified by the Interprofessional Education Collaborative, and (c) the eligibility standards for National Committee for Quality Assurance – Patient Centered Medical Home recognition

In the span of 18 months, Lincoln Faculty overwhelmingly embraced unionism when the body agreed to have AAUP as its official agent in the collective bargaining process. While the decision to organize presented some difficulties, securing and maintaining faculty voice in campus decision-making was fraught with challenges. That struggle continues today
The Effectiveness Of Blended Learning Environments
Get PDFThe object of this experimental study is to measure the effectiveness of a blended learning environment which is laid out on the basis of features for face to face and online environments. The study was applied to 110 students who attend to Atilim University, Ankara, Turkey and take Introduction to Computers Course. During the application, students took the lesson face to face, online and blended. Blended learning environment has been designed in the form of online material sharing, forum, exam, text, picture and lesson summaries supported by videos. Following the training, a scale had been applied to the students on the effectiveness of blended learning environment. According to the results of the analysis, a significant difference between students’ view in relation with blended learning environment as well as online and face to face learning environments. In their answers, students have expressed that they learn more effectively in a blended learning environment
