Mandatory IFRS Adoption And Financial Analysts' Information Environment: Evidence From Korean Market
Get PDFThe paper examines the effects of the mandatory adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) on financial analysts’ information environment, specifically on analysts forecast accuracy in the Korean market. We find that financial analysts’ forecast accuracy improves after the mandatory IFRS adoption. We further investigate the source of observed accuracy enhancements and find that the improved forecast accuracy is attributable to the increased precision in analysts’ information sets for KOSPI firms and increased opportunity for earnings management for KOSDAQ firms. We also find that the analyst coverage in Korean market is reduced after mandatory IFRS adoption
The Reaction Of Analysts To Management Disclosures And Firm Characteristics: Conservatism And Corporate Governance
Get PDFThis paper examines the effect of firm characteristics on analyst reaction to management disclosures. Prior studies have overlooked the fact that analysts can react differently as a result of firm characteristics that can affect the management forecasts’ credibility and usefulness, as well as specific situation like SEO or management forecast characteristics itself. This study extends this line of research by considering firm characteristics after controlling for factors with respect to management forecast characteristics that may affect analyst reaction. I provide evidence that good news management disclosures by firms with high levels of conservatism have more impact to the analysts; therefore, analysts react more to good news management disclosures issued by firms with a high level of conservatism than good news management disclosures that are issued by firms with low levels of conservatism. Similarly, the study finds that analysts react less to bad news management disclosure issued by firms with a high level of conservatism. I also find that analysts have a stronger reaction to management disclosures announced by firms with strong governance and a lower level of managerial ownership. These results show that firm characteristics are also factors that are considered by analysts in the revision of their earnings forecasts following management disclosure

There is an urgent need for South Africa's companies to develop cultures that foster positive work environments and increase productivity. Achieving this is not an easy task and one of the ways to developing this culture is in the area of employee empowerment, ethical climate, organizational support and top management commitment which will ultimately lead to employee job satisfaction. Hence this paper is trying to look at the influence of employee empowerment, ethical climate, organisational support and top management commitment on employee job satisfaction, an area that seem to have been neglected by researchers considering companies in the Gauteng province of South Africa. In today’s work environment, employees are needed to make decisions, take initiative, take responsibility and find solutions to problems as well as being motivated and having the best interest of the company at heart. This study used a quantitative research methodology through using Smart PLS software to analyse the data. The Effect Of Organizational Culture On Employee Commitment: A Mediating Role Of Human Resource Development In Korean Firms
Get PDFThe purpose of this study is to examine the effect of organizational culture defined as communication, trust, and innovative production on employees’ organizational commitment. Furthermore, we explored the possibility the role of HRD (Human Resource Development) activities in mediating the aforementioned relationship. Using the national employer survey data conducted by Korean government in 2011, the results find that organizational culture, in particular, defined as better communication among superiors and subordinates, trust, and appreciation of innovation from superiors, is positively related to organizational commitment. In addition, firm’s investment in HRD or employee participation in HRD would play a mediating role in influencing the relationship between organizational culture and organizational commitment. Therefore, organizational culture is a critical factor to increase workers’ motivation through the participation in HRD training program, thereby increasing worker’s commitment. The results provide theoretical and practical implications in HRD and its link to organizational culture in organizations.

Such clothing has been recognized as the high involvement product for many years, resulting to one of the very interesting subjects in consumer research. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influences of clothing involvement on clothing store preference and clothing benefits sought for African-American female college students. This study demonstrates that African-American female college students are generally satisfied with the current ready-to-wear (RTW) clothing. To purchase such RTW clothing, internet store is revealed as one of very exciting shopping centers. Instead, catalog or mail ordering does not strongly attract to the African-American female college consumers. Compared to other involvement groups, high clothing involvement consumers are actively seeking for the fashion image, one of the factors in clothing benefits sought, as well as actively shopping at department store, specialty stores, outlet stores, and internet in Types of Stores. Interestingly, low involvement consumers are generally less interested in store preference or clothing benefits sought than other involvement groups except for the camouflage benefits

This paradigm is known to be “hard” since it is consisted of mathematical tools, and normally suitable for solving structured problems. In complex situations the conventional OR/MS paradigm proves to be inadequate; decisions must be based on systems thinking which provides the decision maker(s) the opportunity to address the problematic situation in its full system context. The aim here is to develop a framework and a new course to teach “decision making through systems thinking” to industrial engineering students. The new course is to be taken after the existing course which covers the traditional OR/MS paradigm. It is believed that such an “extended” framework will help students to improve their skills in handling complex decision situations.
Risk Management In College Fraternities: Guidance From Two Faculty Advisors

Faculty advisors play an important role in assisting fraternities and sororities in shaping students’ leadership, scholastic, and personal development. Given the risks such as alcohol use and hazing that continue to be associated with Greek life, faculty advisors also need to be actively involved in enforcing various policies to ensure student safety. In this paper, the authors review some of the problems that cause a liability risk to Greek life and they offer examples from their own experience as faculty advisors to two fraternities to help manage the risk.
The Impact Of Correcting Cognitive Distortions In Reducing Depression And The Sense Of Insecurity Among A Sample Of Female Refugee Adolescents
Get PDFThis study aimed at identifying the level of depression and sense of insecurity among a sample of female refugee adolescents, and the impact of an indicative program for reducing cognitive distortions in reducing depression and their sense of insecurity. The study sample consisted of 220 female refugee adolescents, 7th to 1st secondary stage, at the governmental schools in the Zarqa educational directorate, who came to Jordan as a result of war conditions in their home land. The experimental sample contained 20 female refugees, the ones who got the highest scores regarding the depression and sense of insecurity scale, and they were set randomly into 2 groups, experimental and control, with 10 females each. The study used the depression scale, and the sense of insecurity scale. It also used an indicative program consisting of 12 sessions, each one lasts for 45 minutes, with a rate of 2 meetings a week. The results indicated that the female refugee adolescents suffer from a medium-level depression, with an average of (73.97%), and a sense of insecurity (69.46%). Findings showed that there was a statistically significant impact at the level (a=0.05) between the control and experimental groups for depression and sense of insecurity among the female refugee adolescents, ascribed to the indicative program.
Surveying Geology Concepts In Education Standards For A Rapidly Changing Global Context
Get PDFInternationally much attention is being paid to which of a seemingly endless list of scientific concepts should be taught to schoolchildren to enable them to best participate in the global economy of the 21st Century. In regards to science education, the concepts framing the subject of geology holds exalted status as core scientific principles in the Earth and space sciences domain across the globe. Economic geology plays a critical role in the global economy, historical geology guides research into predictions related by global climate change, and environmental geology helps policy makers understand the impact of human enterprises on the land, among many other geological sciences-laden domains. Such a situation begs the question of which geology concepts are being advocated in schools. Within the U.S. where there is no nationally adopted curriculum, careful comparative analysis reveals surprisingly little consensus among policy makers and education reform advocates about which geology concepts, if any, should be included in the curriculum. This lack of consensus manifests itself in few traditional or modern geology concepts being taught to U.S. school children
