Solid State Drives And The Sort-Merge
Get PDFThis paper discusses the history of the sort-merge routine and the impacts of hardware limitations on the performance of sort-merge processing. The results of comparing a single-step sort-merge with a two-step sort-merge in a hard-disk drive (HDD) environment are presented to show that a two-step sort-merge can reduce total processing time. An evaluation is made of the total transfer time of three sort-merge variations without reference to seek time or rotational delay. This evaluation prepares the statistics for application to the solid-state drive (SSD) environment, and the conclusion is that sort-merge routines that are optimized for the HDD environment are sub-optimal if applied to the SSD environment. In addition, the sizes of the work files used by the three sort-merge routines are analyzed, and it is demonstrated that sort-merge routines that are optimized for the HDD environment will generate unnecessary wear if applied to the SDD environment. Further, it is demonstrated that the key sorting routine should be preferred over the other sort-merge routines in a SSD environment
The Effects Of Two Different Instructional Programmes On Literacy Skills Of Kindergarten Children
Get PDFLately, research exploring the effects of tutorial instructional programmes and educational games on literacy skills of kindergarten children has attracted large number of educational technology researchers and practitioners. Even though overwhelming research literature on the subject is available, the majority of this existing work is designed and organized in western contexts i.e. developed countries. Due to that reason, much less is known about the effects of tutorial instructional programmes and educational games on the literacy skills of Arabic speaking kindergarten children. Our study tries to bridge this gap in the existing literature by performing a comparison study of two different instructional programmes on the development of literacy skills amongst 5 to 6 years old kindergarten children in Saudi Arabia. As a result of this study, it was found that educational games were more effective in supporting and facilitating literacy skills of participating kindergarten children compared to tutorial instructional programmes
A Comparative Study Of The Attitudes, Self-Efficacy, And Readiness Of American Versus Turkish Language Teachers
Get PDFContrasting studies of foreign language teacher education have become a growing interest among educationists and researchers in different countries (Yoder, 1992; McKay & Montgomery, 1995; Baker & Giacchino-Baker, 2000; Stachowski & Sparks, 2007; Firmin, M. W., Firmin, R & MacKay, F. M., 2008; LaFond & Dogancay-Aktuna, 2009; Ozek, 2009). Such studies emphasize the importance of comparing and understanding different education programs and enables student teachers to think more globally with respect to their language career. These contrasting studies investigate different aspects of foreign language (FL) teaching programs. The present study reports a comparison of the student teachers of an American and Turkish university regarding their satisfaction and readiness in language teaching, and their attitudes towards language teaching theories and teacher education program. The study aims to discover the teacher trainees’ perceptions with an in-depth understanding and compare the differences among them. Therefore, the researcher employed an interconnection of qualitative and quantitative approaches. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires and interviews. The results indicated that there were some significant differences between the subjects in two groups regarding their readiness, their attitudes towards their education programs and their self-perceptions as teacher candidates
Keeping The Lights On With Coal Energy: A Financial Approach

The most important events are: the increase of environmental regulations, the surge of natural gas as a cleaner fuel, the operative costs, the aging and the efficiency issue of the coal-fired power plants. However, the decision of the U.S.A. Supreme Court, the 29th of June 2015, suspended the regulation proposals presented by the U.S.A. Environmental Protection Agency concerning the mercury emissions of coal-fired power plants. This decision caused debate and controversy. The main objective of the sustainable approach for electricity generation is to find the blending of fuels that decrease contamination. However, the contradiction of different events in the world poses the challenge to evaluate if the XXI Century will see the end of the coal era. Could the technological breakthroughs like the Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) and the development of other Clean Energy Technologies on Coal (CCT) stop this trend or, will the financial and environmental profitability of coal help it to remain in the energy mix
A Case Study Of The Cash Flow Statement: US GAAP Conversion To IFRS
Get PDFInternational Reporting Standards (IFRS) has become the required framework for most of the world financial markets effective on January 1, 2011. The United States is in a transformation stage, and it has not yet been determined when the US will adopt IFRS. The introduction of IFRS accounting rules into the curriculum is valuable because it presents an alternative method of accounting which can be used to heighten students understanding of GAAP. At present, the CPA Uniform CPA exam is testing IFRS and its testing content is increasing with each current test. Additionally, the CFA exam tests IFRS exclusively and has eliminated US GAAP from its curriculum, basing its action on the fact that the CFA examination is a global based exam. This case requires students to prepare an IFRS cash Flow Statement from a presented US GAAP presented Statement of Cash Flow, from a given set of facts in the case. This case study can be used at the undergraduate or graduate level. It is most suitable for Intermediate Accounting 2, Accounting Theory, Financial Statement Analysis, and an Accounting Capstone classes. Students must have or develop a solid understanding of both US GAAP and IFRS rules is required to adequately address this cash flow case study.

As such, this case study deals with a real-life scenario when a recent graduate in the area of journalism and professional writing attempts to branch out and complement her professional interests. With a fresh MPA in hand, Suzanne Rodgers lands a paid internship with a mid-sized city and takes on the responsibility of researching, planning, and implementing a policy and set of recommendations, for the Public Works Department. She interviews the key political and economic actors in Winterville, provides a comprehensive description of the city, researches and analyses the incentives and barriers to change and then sets out to develop a plan for a comprehensive residential recycling effort that contains two options: solid waste management and balancing a landfill fund. This plan and implementation strategy is addressed in a research portfolio. In the final analysis she is faced with the real world issues of public interests and pressures and at a town hall meeting receives the responses from the citizens of Winterville. The case concludes with measurements that were used in Iowa’s Pollution Prevention Intern Program and a summary of the tonnage of waste and pollution reduction and diversion associated with the program from 2001-2014. Teachers' Misunderstanding The Concept Of Inclusive Education
Get PDFTeachers' misunderstanding the concept of inclusive education will not lead to good practices, rather make an exclusive environment for pupils with special educational needs in mainstream schools. This study clarified teachers' attitudes towards the image of inclusive education with conjoint analysis and cluster analysis. The participants for this study were 182 teachers who were from both mainstream schools and special schools. Their image about inclusive education was mainly dependent upon the organization of group and size of a group. The subfile summary of the conjoint analysis indicated that the teacher's views of inclusive education as images of "expanding school environment to include a child", withdrawal to "resource room", "small groups", and "a pupil with disability in a mainstream group." On the other hand, images of "repudiation of segregated learning opportunities", "homogeneous group", "a large size group", and "various attributes in a group" were perceived as "non-inclusive." The author has divided the participants into two groups by cluster analysis. The factors in dividing were discussed as not depend on their teaching experience nor school type, but local school environment - such as enrollment ratio of foreign pupils
Teaching The Practice Of Compassion To Nursing Students Within An Online Learning Environment: A Qualitative Study Protocol
Get PDFBackground: There is an increasing global demand for higher education to incorporate flexible delivery. Nursing education has been at the forefront of developing flexible online education and offering programs ‘anywhere and anytime’. In response to calls to teach compassion in nursing education, there is an abundance of literature concerning classroom teaching, but few online studies.Design: This paper presents a qualitative study protocol to explore the effectiveness of a compassion module taught to undergraduate nursing students within a digital learning environment. The protocol consists of an online knowledge intervention (compassion module) and pre- and post-intervention qualitative questions to explore and describe undergraduate nursing students’ understanding and learning about the practice of compassion toward patients, colleagues and self.Methods: Students will study the online compassion module over a two week period in a theory course in the final year of the Bachelor of Nursing. Students will participate in the study by responding to open-ended questions, administered through SurveyMonkey® before and after studying the online compassion module. Free text responses will be analysed thematically. The researchers will obtain institutional ethical approval.Discussion: This study protocol may generate new knowledge about how nursing students learn compassionate practice within an online learning environment. These findings could be used by nurse leaders and educators to develop empirically supported curricula and workplace cultures to foster the practice of compassion and resilience in the next generation of nurses
An Exploratory Study Of The Effects Of Online Course Efficiency Perceptions On Student Evaluation Of Teaching (SET) Measures
Get PDFOne of the fundamental drivers of the growing use of distance learning methods in modern business education has been the efficiency gains associated with this method of educational delivery. Distance methods benefit both students and educational institutions as they facilitate the processing of large volumes of learning material to overcome barriers related to time, geography and physical facility constraints. Nevertheless, existing research has not examined the extent by which these efficiency gains, compared to traditional face-to-face teaching, are recognized by online students. Moreover, the extent by which students’ perceptions of course efficiency affects other key educational measures, such as intent to take online courses in the future, and instructor and course ratings, has not been examined in current research. In this paper, utilizing data from student evaluation of teaching (SET) surveys from multiple sections of three online marketing courses, the effects of perceived course efficiency on various SET measures are examined. The results indicate, that contrary to popular belief, students who view online courses as efficient exhibit lower sentiments towards the course and the instructor, and are also academically weaker than other students. The paper concludes with a discussion of the findings and future directions for research
