Study Of Faculty Instructors In Undergraduate Classroom And Planetarium Learning Environments

A mixed-methods study exploring the undergraduate planetarium learning environment was conducted during the 2019--2020 academic year at a western American university. Survey responses from university faculty, observational data using the Classroom Observation Protocol for Undergraduate STEM (COPUS), and faculty interview responses were collected and analyzed to investigate how and why collegiate undergraduates were being instructed in a planetarium environment and how this environment compared to a traditional classroom counterpart. Results suggest that planetarium use is viewed by instructors as an integrated learning experience with the classroom environment, with affective learning outcomes in the planetarium complemented by cognitive learning outcomes in the classroom. COPUS observations of planetarium instruction show broad similarity to classroom instruction; however, reductionsin active-learning behavior archetypes measured in the planetarium environment suggest a trade-off between interactive learning strategies and visually immersive content presentation. Implications concerning the collegiate planetarium environment and future work are discussed

Analysis Of Family Business Group Succession: Comparative Case Study On Six Korean Chaebols

    No full text
A chaebol is a Korean business group with a unique organizational structure in which both ownership and control rights held by a family. As their production accounts for nearly fifty percent of Korea’s GDP and their power in the labor market, it is important to analyze the succession of chaebols, which is closely related to the sustainability of the business. This paper analyzes the six Korean chaebols’ successions to increase our understanding of the processes and outcomes of the family succession. Specifically, we employ the three-circle model, i.e., the ownership, family, and business system, to conduct a comparative case study. Our analysis suggests that succession that involves a large size of succession concentrated to only one successor and restructuring of business portfolio experiences higher post- performance. Also, the level of conflicts in the succession process was not found to have an effect on performance. Overall, our findings imply that the succession is a period available to the company to set a right course of actions for improving competitiveness

Employing Postcolonial Theory As A Framework For Creating A More Inclusive Workplace

The business case for diversity rhetoric is commonplace in 2019, suggesting a profit for ensuring equal opportunity in the workplace. Organizations across a multitude of industries as well as academia have invested incredible resources to develop this concept. This article reviews postcolonial theory from multiple perspectives and uses postcolonial theory themes as a framework to explore the reasons why inclusion and diversity business strategies and programs are not seeing the progress originally anticipated. Considering the use of the social justice discourse, themes of postcolonial theory, and humanistic leadership practices, suggestions and recommendations for creating a more inclusive workplace are outlined. Postcolonial Theor

Meeting Or Beating Analysts’ Revenue Forecasts Using Advertising Activities

This paper investigates the relationship between the likelihood of accomplishing the revenue expectations and the use of firms’ advertising expenditures depending on firms’ growth properties. First, using the analysts’ revenue forecasts as a proxy of revenues expected by market participants, the test shows that growth firms spend more resources in their advertising activities to boost up their reported revenues than non-growth firms do. The paper also examines whether the effect of the interaction between the growth properties of firms and the use of advertising expenses on the probability of achieving analysts’ revenue forecasts can vary conditionally on firms’ business strategies. Empirical results display that the positive relation between growth firms and the probability of meeting or exceeding analysts’ revenue forecasts are statistically significant for cost leadership firms but not for differentiation firms. These findings suggest that unlike differentiators, cost leaders with growth properties are more likely to achieve favorable revenue surprises through advertising activities

Firm-Specific Characteristics And The Disclosure Level: Evidence From The Tehran Stock Exchange

This paper studies the relationship between the disclosure level and firm-specific characteristics of firms listed on the Tehran Stock Exchange (TSE). Our study contributes to the firm financial disclosure literature by documenting the empirical evidence on the relationship between CEO tenure and firm disclosure. We use firms’ disclosure scores released by the Iranian Securities and Exchange Organization (SEO) that measure the disclosure level of listed companies. The research data consists of 2,719 firm-year observations from 404 Iranian listed firms on the TSE for 2003-2014. Using regression analyses, we find that longer CEO tenure improves the level of disclosure. Also, we document that firm profitability, liquidity, and asset-in-place have a positive effect on the disclosure level. Moreover, we report that leverage, age, and market share have an inverse effect on the disclosure level

Analyzing The Strength Between Mission And Vision Statements And Industry Via Machine Learning

Mission and vision statements are critical to a company’s success both from a company’s long-term goals and appearance to potential customers. We analyze a collection of 772 mission and vision statements from companies via natural language processing. This data is hand annotated into 15 industry types. We show the distinctiveness and connectiveness of each industry via text processing and machine learning techniques. The extracted features of each industry are a telling and guiding indicator of what that industry embraces. We show high predictive power via machine learning to determine an industry by looking only at the mission and vision statement

The Pursuit Of Excellence: 3rd-Party Rankings And Positioning Of Online Programs Through Quality And Value

Third-party ranking agencies (e.g., US News and World Report, Center for Online Education, CollegeChoice.net) produce rankings that are a popular publicly accessible search option for potential students as they sort online degree options. While higher education administration is keen to the possibility that most or all ranking systems risk methodological flaws, potential students are still on board with rankings and seem significantly steered by their results (Barkhorn, 2014). Monitoring rankings has become a positioning consideration for academic institutions. The disparity amongst ranking factors across time and across assessor, along with the mismatch between ranking methods used and suggested methodologies from research on higher education begs the question: which attributes are colleges and universities supposed to leverage? This study reports a fully mediated SEM using data from online student feedback across multiple quality touch points: faculty, LMS and course on student loyalty as mediated by perceived value

Rank Power Analysis For Comparative Strength Of Professional Sports Franchises

Major professional sports teams are nowadays complex businesses, intrinsically concerned with matters of economics and finance. Performances of each teams and each franchises vary greatly. This paper makes comparative performance analyses for four profession franchises in North America. Four financial measures are chosen to represent team performances: attendance, revenue, payroll, and profit. First, the box-plot was utilized to measure the spread of the power (wealth) of each league with respect to each measures. Second, the rank-power distribution was used to visualize the team’s relative standings in each measures and in each franchises. Most team performances were observed to follow the Pareto principle: few teams scored very high (significant few); large numbers of teams scored very low (trivial many). These qualitative findings can be a useful guide for franchise owners and commissioners for the future strategic planning
