Researching Student Motivation
Motivation has been studied by different scientists in different fields of knowledge such as biology, psychology, and education for a long period, which has cultivated a wealth of knowledge in these disciplines. The richness in motivation theories poses complexity in motivation research. Due to these complexities, many researchers focus on using a single motivation theory in their studies. Using multiple motivation theories in a singular study is not a common practice in education research. This study presents a unifying framework for approaching motivation research in education which offers an opportunity to use multiple motivation theories in educational research, and other disciplines.
Marginal Employment Growth Effects In The South African Economy
South Africa relative to its peers (upper middle income countries) suffers from high unemployment and sub-optimal economic growth. This study investigates the ‘marginal effects of employment’ with respect to real output and capital in South Africa, using annual data covering the period 1946-2015. It estimates the responsiveness of employment to real output growth and capital, employing the short and long-run dynamic interactions between these variables via the application of the VAR/VECM Johansen (1991) framework. The results show that there exists a statistically significant long-run co-integrating relationship between labour employment and real GDP growth. Marginal employment growth effect is positive; a one per cent increase in GDP tends to increase employment by about one third of one per cent. Employment adjusts consistent with expectations when it overshoots its structural relationship with other variables. However, real output tends to adjust contrary to expectations, implying significant diminishing returns to employment in the economy. Growth in capital impacts positively on output and employment. The study concluded that greater labour market flexibility and higher worker productivity is needed across all sectors of the economy
Using The Interactive Graphic Syllabus In The Teaching Of Economics
Syllabus is essentially a concise outline of a course of study, and conventionally a text document. In the past few decades, however, two novel variations of syllabus have emerged, namely “the Graphic Syllabus” and “the Interactive Syllabus”. Each of these two variations of syllabus has its own special advantages. The present paper argues that there could be devised a new combined version of the two mentioned variations, called “the Interactive Graphic Syllabus”, which can potentially bring us the advantages of both at the same time. Specifically, using a well-designed Interactive Graphic syllabus can bring about many advantages such as clarifying complex relationships; causing a better retention; needing less cognitive energy for interpretation; helping instructors identify any snags in their course organization; capability of being integrated easily into a course management system; appealing to many of learning styles and engaging students with different learning styles. In addition to the introduction of the notion of the Interactive Graphic Syllabus, in order to put this idea into action in the context of economics, the present paper takes advantage of the visual “big picture” of intermediate macroeconomics that has already been proposed by Moosavian (2016a). The present paper describes a web-page that contains a web-based interactive graphic of the aforementioned macroeconomics visual “big picture”. It is argued that this graphic can be used as a cyber-resource to technologically support the above-mentioned visual “big picture”, which comprises twenty-seven interrelated macroeconomic diagrams, and gives some details on the types of their relationships. Furthermore, it provides numerous internet links to other relevant instructional resources offered by well-known universities, allowing the students to somehow zoom in the macroeconomics “big picture”. Moreover, this web-page provides roughly one hundred links to short instructional videos. More interestingly, it responds interactively, if one hovers over a particular diagram, by highlighting the routes through which the final macroeconomic general equilibrium is affected by any change in that particular diagram. The interactive graphic went online on 10/30/2015 at the URL http://zeytoonnejad.com/macrobigpic.aspx and is still under minor modification.
Service And The Millennial Business Student: The Motivating Influence Of An E-Book Class Project
A commitment to voluntary service that benefits others was reinforced for students who authored an e-book on service as a class project in a senior business course. The immersive experience of writing short essays that focused on service shifted students’ motivations toward service and solidified their intentions to continue with service after graduation. The article reviews millennials’ characteristics and their activities related to volunteering services. The concerns of generations covering the past 100 years illustrate the shift from physical hardship and a rudimentary standard of living in earlier times toward present-day issues of millennials, namely economic security, technology change, globalization and meaningfulness in life and careers. A 4-stage model shows how student engagement in creating the e-book influenced commitment to service. The stages include (a) salience (being tasked with the assignment), (b) reflection (thinking about service), (c) internalization (deciding about service in their own lives), (d) commitment-action (resolve to actively integrate service into future life). Examination of millennials’ values and work styles indicated the e-book as a class project matched their preferences. Each of 5 teams was tasked to complete deliverables, which the students produced operating under a “leaderless classroom” structure. Corporations that encourage employees to offer pro bono services have recognized benefits to their employees, reinforcing the need for business education programs to include service-related experiences
The Effect Of Problem Based Learning On Undergraduate Oral Communication Competency
Purpose: The aim of this study was to ascertain the effect of Problem Based Learning (PBL) on student oral communication competency gains. Methods: Eighty students from two consecutive undergraduate Kinesiology courses (Spring semesters, 2014-15) formed into 29 small groups and were studied. Oral communication competency was assessed using a customized rubric and digital recordings of student presentations. Changes to oral communication competency across time were tested using a dependent t-test; a < .05. Results: Significant inter-rater agreement was found at both time points for oral communication rating, and student groups demonstrated significant oral communication gains across time. Conclusions: Collaborative learning was shown to improve students’ oral communication competency. Future study is required to determine the influence of student motivation and goal orientation on oral communication competency, in relation to the various phases of knowledge creation occurring within student groups.
Linking Early Childhood Education With Indigenous Education Using Gamification: The Case Of Maintaining Cultural Value And Identity
Cultural values and identities remain the bench mark for national identity, cohesion, patriotism and harmonious co-existence in any society. The introduction of western education into west Africa created a weak bridge between the indigenous education and the western education which needs to be properly linked using curriculum harmonisation. This paper examines how far the curriculum of early childhood education in Nigeria link with indigenous education which is the child first point of learning. Four research questions guided the study. The study adopted a descriptive survey design with a population of 655 public primary schools that house early childhood centers spread across the 23 local government areas of Rivers State. A sample size of 164 head teachers in early childhood centers was drawn using stratified random sampling technique representing 25% of the population. Questionnaire which was validated was used as the instrument and the reliability yielded an index of 0.81. Mean and rank order scores were used to answer the research questions. The findings revealed among others, that methodologies that used gamification can be linked with early childhood education and indigenous education. These include storytelling, riddles, animal clowning, demonstration, stone counting, and local farm tools by the teachers. This implies that the teachers are aware of the ways gamification can be used to link early childhood education with indigenous education but do not use most of these methods probably it is not highlighted in their scheme of work. Based on the findings, the researchers recommended that the western curriculum should be developed base on an indigenous knowledge of early childhood in teacher training institution curriculum for early childhood education
Intercultural Sensitivity, Gender, And Nationality Of Third Culture Kids Attending An International High School
Due to the globalization and interconnectedness of people from different cultures, intercultural competence is a prerequisite to communicating effectively across different cultures. The Intercultural Sensitivity Inventory (ICSI) measures a person’s ability to modify behavior in culturally appropriate ways when coming into contact with diverse cultures. The ICSI is a measurement based on the concepts of individualism and collectivism. The majority of research on intercultural competence and intercultural sensitivity (ICS) has primarily focused on adult populations in business, international education exchange programs, and adult third culture kids (ATCKs). However, such research involving high school students attending an international school outside of the United States is scant. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the differences in intercultural sensitivity (ICS) among Third Culture Kids (TCKs). Specifically, this study assessed the differences in ICS among the independent variables of gender and participant’s passport country. Additionally, the study examined the difference in ICS between Korean females and non-Korean females. The ICSI was used to measure the participants’ ICS. The sample consists of 139 international high school students. The independent samples t-test revealed no statistically significant in ICS among males and females, as well as Korean females and non-Korean females. However, the results revealed a statistically significant difference between Korean and non-Korean students. Korean students scored lowered on the ICSI than their counterparts
The Security Implications Of The Internet Of Things
The Internet of Things connects various electronic devices and these can range from the expensive, such as cars or computers, to the mundane, such as toasters or light bulbs and this creates a major security problem. While attention is paid to the complex expensive items, the inexpensive items, although connected to the same network, are often overlooked. With a desperate race to produce more for less and to connect more items to the network, these inexpensive items are overlooked, never updated and in many cases, are downright dangerous when connected to a network and this makes the Internet insecure for everyone else
Cybercrime, Hacking, And Legislation
As cybercrime continues to evolve, legislation will continue to play a key role in the prosecution of individuals committing computer related offenses. The public has witnessed the rapid change in computer technology, continued popularity of social media, and increased e-commerce. With those changes comes an increase in computer crimes being committed. This article gives an overview of the evolution of cybercrime, and its influence on current legislation
CEO Gender And Earnings Management
Using the female CEO and male CEO groups over a 14-year (1992–2013) period, we find that the male CEOs use aggressive discretionary accruals and real activities operations in order to report small positive earnings or small earnings increases whereas the earnings management using real activities operation of suspect firms disappear in the female CEO group
