Organizational Justice In Higher Education: Perceptions Of Taiwanese Professors And Staffs

    Get PDF
Higher education in Asia is becoming more prominent according to Western higher education researchers, but it is also being influenced by globalization, resulting in two types of structural inequality in higher education. Organizational justice relates to positive developments of educational organizations. It refers to the sense of fairness and equality on aspects of organization policies and regulations relating to individual interests perceived by organizations’ internal members. This research first reviews the related literature to identify internal factors in the concept of organizational justice in higher education. The author designed a survey questionnaire to assess professors’ perceptions of organizational justice at their universities. The author sent out the questionnaires to Taiwanese professors with different research expertise at different universities. This research divided organizational justice into distributive justice, procedure justice, interpersonal justice, and information justice. Ultimately, 180 valid questionnaires were collected and analyzed. Four background variables (gender, age, position, and institutional type) showed statistical correlations with organizational justice in Taiwan’s higher education institutions

Online, Blended And Technology-Enhanced Learning: Tools To Facilitate Community College Student Success In The Digitally-Driven Workplace

    Get PDF
Community colleges have embraced distance education as a means to provide increased flexibility and access to their large numbers of non-traditional students. Retention rates and student achievement measures alone may not reflect all of the benefits and opportunities that online learning, blended or hybrid learning, and technology-enhanced learning may afford these students. Online learning resources should be viewed as a tremendous value-added benefit for community college students, not only for the content conveyed, but also for fostering the digital readiness, cultivating the professional personas, and encouraging the self-directed learning needed to succeed in the digitally-driven workplace

Disabled Laborers And The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s (EEOCs) Nightmare

In 2012, EEOC v. After a raid of the bright blue, florescent colored, century old school house in Atalissa, Iowa, these employers were brought to justice.  This case study is about one of the largest EEOC settlements in the history of the United States; yet due to federal damage caps was cut to $1.6 million for all of the men and their estates. The graphic account of the inhumane treatment and degradation of the labors presented in this study is not provided for gratuitous or salacious purposes; rather, it places into context what can occur when governmental regulations and laws go unheeded, unenforced and when authorities are apprised of wrongdoing possibilities stand idly by and in this case, do nothing for 35 years.

Rethinking Education In Botswana: A Need To Overhaul The Botswana Education System

    Get PDF
Botswana through its two educational reform philosophies of 1977 and 1994 envisioned a developing education system that is on par with international standards. According to Tabulawa (2009), the education system was developed to produce critical thinkers, problem solvers, and innovative learners. The system was designed to provide opportunities for all students by providing access to all, improve the standards of education, emancipate Batswana from illiteracy, and develop their capabilities to create a social transformation in their lives. Education was to be a vehicle for continuous positive change that would ultimately enable people to build a better world. However, the system is wanting since most students drop out of school, fail the national examinations, or are unemployable graduates. Research shows that the standard and quality of education is deteriorating as evidenced by high rates of failure at primary and secondary schools. This paper established the reasons for deteriorating standards and failure of students; and whether this was a result of the difficulty, the country finds itself in attempting to re-think and change its educational system to improve the standards or any other factors. This paper reviewed the obstacles leading to high failure rate in one primary school and the need to overhaul, rethink, reform and transform the country’s education system. This study was carried out at the Ministry of Education and Skills Development, which is presently divided into two sub departments; the Ministry of Basic Education and Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology and one (1) primary school in Gaborone through the use of qualitative method

Attitudes Of Jordanian Students Toward Managers' Leadership Styles And Their Relationship To The National Culture

    Get PDF
This study explores the attitudes of a group of university students about managers' leadership styles and the cultural characteristics of the Jordanian society. The amount of research on the topic of leadership styles in Jordan is rare, particularly when associated with national culture. The outcomes demonstrated that the surveyed students were more disposed to portray the proposed leadership styles of managers as Team management style followed by Country Club style. On the other hand, when these students were asked to describe their national culture, they described it in a way similar to the Arab Group culture presented by Hofstede. Furthermore, the surveyed students gave power distance then muscularity the first confirmation. No significant relation observed between students' attitudes of leadership styles and characteristics of the Jordanian culture. Reasons for this outcome together with a few recommendations are incorporated into this study.

Matching Level And Investors’ Heterogeneous Beliefs

This study investigated the relation between matching level and investors’ heterogeneous beliefs using listed firm (KOSPI) data in Korea. This study is based on prior research that reported that the higher the matching level, the less the noise included in accounting earnings and the higher the earnings quality. Karpoff (1986), Bamber (1987), Ajinkya, Atiase, & Gift (1991) and Dormeier (2011) explain that if there are different interpretations among investors regarding intrinsic value of a company, as a result, the trading volume can represent investors’ heterogeneous beliefs. Whereas the previous studies on matching level analyzed what kind of impact matching level improvement has on earnings quality, accumulated market adjusted return, foreign ownership, future earnings response coefficient (FERC) and bond credit rating. However, these studies have problems in measuring the matching level. So this study suggested additional proxy on matching level in addition to the proxy used in previous studies. Specifically, we analyzed the matching level model of Paek’s (2011b) by using the Prais-Winsten estimation method and then used the calculated explanatory power (Adj.R2) as a proxy for the additional matching level. To empirically analyze hypothesis of this study, we used firm-year observation from 4,094 firms listed on Korean Stock Exchange over the period from 2003 to 2011. We found that matching level regression coefficient consistently showed significantly negative values for each measurement. Moreover, we analyzed additionally by measuring the calculated regression coefficient (?2) of current expenses as matching level response coefficient after analyzing Dichev and Tang’s (2008) matching level measuring model by Prais-Winsten estimation method. It showed that regression coefficient of the current expenses and trading volume have negative correlation. This is consistent with this study, and it can be analyzed that as matching level improves, investors’ heterogeneous beliefs decrease. According to microeconomics theory of Mas-Colell, Whinston, and Green (1995), trading volume is explained to affect price changes. However, accounting and related studies analyze the information effect by using price change only. In this sense, this study is meaningful in that it conducted an analysis on the information effect of matching level through trading volume. In addition, this study contributes to understand the microscopic structure of the capital market

Impact Of Social Media Advertising On High Energy Drink Preferences And Consumption

    Get PDF
Despite the surging appropriation of social media by marketers for communicative marketing of brands, what remains under-explored in literature is the capacity of social media platforms to influence student preferences for brands. This research gap is ironic given the growing literature on the potential of self-images shared on social media to influence consumers’ product preferences and purchase intentions. Drawing on Media Richness Theory, agency, extant literature and authors’ personal reflections on social media adoption for brand selection by students, this theoretical study examines how students navigate such platforms to make informed choices about energy drinks. The findings suggest while students exploited social media platforms intermittently to access energy drink brands, their brand preferences and choices were informed by personal agency (especially personal volition, peer influences, convenience and availability of brands) more than social media networks per se. The study contributes a conceptual model that integrate social media appropriation, consumer decision making, brand preferences and purchases. While the model is untested, its methodological strength lays in its reliance on extant literature, proven concepts, anecdotes of student consumption behavior and authors’ knowledge of social media, which are critical to deepening academics and policy makers’ understanding of social media-brand preference relations in real world contexts

Nature Of Information Provided And Quality Of Sustainability Reports Assurance Statements Of Fortune Global 500 Companies

    Get PDF
The objective of this study is to investigate how the quality of assurance statement varies among the different assurance providers (accounting versus non-accounting firms). The sample consists of one hundred thirty-five of Fortune Global 500 companies for the year 2014. Independent sample t-test is used to determine how the quality of assurance statement differs among various assurance providers. The result shows that accounting firms still dominate the sustainability report assurance market (75.56 per cent), while non-accounting firms is 24.44 per cent. However, in terms of quality score of assurance statement, non-accounting assurance providers (consultant) value higher than accounting firms for all aspects of report content (reporting format, assurance procedures and recommendations and opinion).  The implication of this finding suggests that the company not only to consider the reputation of the assurance provider, but the more important thing is competence and expertise in the field of sustainability reporting. Despite the growing interest research in assurance, this study is one of the few studies that measure assurance quality by content analysis

The Effects Of Business Strategy On The Association Between R&D Expenditure And Future Firm Performance

    Get PDF
Research and Development (R&D) expenditure is one of the most essential factors for firm’s sustainable growth. Business strategy describes long-term business planning of a company, and chosen business strategy will have a significant impact on the financial status and performance of a firm. This study examines whether the business strategy affects the association between R&D and firm performance, defined as earnings persistence, earnings growth, and firm value. Like Jermias (2008), product differentiation and cost leadership strategies are classified by the cluster analysis using three ratios: R&D intensity, asset turnover, and profit margin ratio. Our findings are as follows. (1) the effect of R&D expenditure on earnings persistence according to the business strategy appeared to be almost insignificant. (2) the effects of R&D expenditure on earnings growth up to three consecutive years are stronger in firms with product differentiation strategy than in firms with cost leadership strategy. These results indicate that R&D are more important and have greater impacts on future performance for product differentiation firms than for cost leadership firms. (3) R&D expenditure of product differentiation firms are more closely related to the firm value than R&D expenditure of cost leadership firms. The results of this study will be useful to practitioners when they are making R&D-related decisions based on their business planning. Also, this study provides useful empirical results to financial analysts and accounting academics when they are analyzing profitability and firm value

The Impact Of The Joint Provision Of Non-Audit Services On Audit Firm’s Tenure: A Kuwaiti Evidence

    Get PDF
Concerns about the potential harm of the increased economic bond between the audit firm and the audit client resulting from the joint provision of audit and NAS have been investigated extensively in the audit literature. However, much of this research was conducted in developed countries’ settings, with very little, if any, carried out in the context of a developing country. The current study aims at filling this gap in audit research by investigating two important issues related to the joint provision using data from the Kuwaiti audit market. First, this study examines whether there is an association between the provision of NAS to the audit client and audit firm’s tenure as a surrogate of audit independence. Second, the current study aims at examining factors expected to influence clients’ purchase of NAS in the Kuwaiti audit market. Contrary to expectations, the results reveal a negative relationship between the joint provision and external audit firm’s tenure, suggesting that such a joint provision does not lead to the impairment of auditor independence. Results obtained from the NAS purchase logistic regression also show that audit client’s purchase of NAS from their audit firms is positively related to the amount of audit fees and client’s financial leverage
