    A researcher with five years’ experience of teaching online classes shares what she has seen and experienced while working with her students. Through the evolution of working with Tegrity, Collaborate, and ZOOM the author shares the lived experience. The work of Max van Manen, a phenomenological researcher, serves as the framework. Descriptions are included of experiences from actual online classes. Research supports the findings: communication is essential in online classes; establishing a community of learners provides support to all involved; and students need to be accountable to themselves, the class and to the professors

    Protecting University Students From Bullying And Harassment: A Review Of The Initiatives At Canadian Universities

    Students’ bullying and harassment have been shown to be a problem and more schools around the world are starting to address them. Although much of the attention and research has focused on middle-school students, addressing bullying and harassment in universities is important and makes the object of the present research. We provide an overview of how student versus student bullying and harassment are reported, monitored, and dealt with at Canadian educational institutions. Specifically, we identify schools where there is information and policies regarding students’ persecution; we describe how colleges help and what advice they offer; we discuss frameworks used to tackle it; as well, we present other initiatives aiming to prevent it. We also attempt to evaluate measures by linking them with incidence figures. This review may guide future initiatives to tackle intimidation with the ultimate goal of improving the quality of university environment

    Earnings Management To Sustain Consecutive Earnings Increases

    In this paper, I examine the pattern of earnings management undertaken by firms with a string of at least five-year consecutive earnings increases. Results indicate that discretionary accruals of those firms intensify as firms move towards the end of an earnings string while the extent of discretionary accruals declines sharply when the string ends

    How Leaders Generate Meanings For Monetary Rewards

    Scant research has focused on how to increase the value of monetary rewards when they are delivered by leaders to employees. Drawing upon the perspectives of sensegiving and sensemaking, this study explores how leaders generate meanings of monetary rewards perceived by employee recipients in organizational settings. Using a qualitative method design and analyzing qualitative data from 291 incidents, we found that in the distribution process of monetary rewards, sensemaking of employees included strong and weak instrumental meanings as well as symbolic meanings. The results show that leaders adopted a set of sensegiving strategies in distributing monetary rewards including emphasizing money gain/loss and utility, providing feedback, valuing employees, orienting toward the future, guiding values, and publicizing. In the presence of leader’s sensegiving, employee recipients endorsed more positive symbolic meanings of monetary rewards (i.e., recognition and respect). Our research offers a richer view of the role of leader’s sensegiving in making monetary rewards gain more value through employees’ sensemaking, and enriches understanding of monetary rewards, leadership, sensegiving and sensemaking

    Teaching Methods In International Law

    This research presents the effect of innovation in the educational methodology applied to the teaching of topics in different areas, especially in public international law, trying to demonstrate how learning can be stimulated through artistic awareness. When comparing the different generations of students, we wonder if it is possible for teachers to follow the step of digital natives. In order to fill this generation gap, Tecnológico de Monterrey proposed to support projects of experimentation in educational innovation in various topics related to improving the teaching-learning process. Based on this premise, a group of teachers generate a model of educational innovation training, to facilitate learning for students through the development of creativity in how, when and where to generate learning, integrating challenging and interactive experiences through activities within the teaching practice. The use of traditional methods has led to the overwhelm of teachers, fatigue and pressure, therefore, the contribution of this project is aimed at the teacher to internalize his innovative and creative work, and see himself as a leader transformative in its teaching practice, establishing new teaching-learning spaces. Implementing learning activities through the imagination and measuring the impact on the student of the use of creative activities allows us to improve what we currently do. For this, an interdisciplinary workshop was created (thought and word, mind and body, music, visual arts) where the teacher, through practical and experiential activities, stimulates his imagination, recognizes his talents in creative and innovative thinking and develops resources which then leads to their teaching practice, by designing challenging learning experiences that inspire the student to creatively solve tasks and projects. In order to carry out the objective, we gathered eight professors from different areas (law, international relations, political science, languages, architecture, art, cultural diffusion) convinced that creativity improves the teacher’s performance who rethinks its activities to allow learn more dynamically. It was sought to improve the performance of students who appreciated the approach to the subjects through didactic methods that the teacher had modified according to the passions observed outside the classroom

    What's That Object? Learning Astronomical Concepts Through The Use Of The Aladin Program And Manipulation Of Astronomical Images

    Various studies have noted current shortcomings in the teaching and learning of science in schools, and the results of large-scale tests show that despite heavy investment in education, Brazilians' understanding of science test scores typically fall short of what could be if students had a consistent, high-quality basic education. This article summarizes the teaching plan and systematic study results for an activity titled "What’s That Object?" implemented in the city of Salvador, Bahia state, Brazil, in 2015. Astronomical concepts were taught, and the Aladin software was used in the lessons, which included two computerized memory games produced for this activity.We believe that the results lend strong support to the notion that astronomy education can be improved and motivates educators to teach astronomical concepts at the elementary school level

    A Practical Approach To Estimating The Cost Of Equity For South African Firms Undertaking Cross-Border Investments

    Corporate finance literature has developed a number of models for use in estimating the cost equity in for cross-border investments. Most of the models, if not all, are specifically developed for use by US firms investing in emerging markets. The widely used models are the home country CAPM, the local CAPM, the country-risk adjusted CAPM or the Lessard model, the Godfrey-Espinosa model, the Goldman Sachs model, the Gamma model and the SalomonSmithBarney model. Using a hypothetical case study of FirstRand Limited’s proposed investments in Ireland and Turkey, this study tests for the suitability of the reverse-engineered versions of these models in estimating the cost of equity for a South African firm planning to invest in both Ireland (developed country) and Turkey (emerging country). The results of the study indicate that the Godfrey-Espinosa the Goldman-Sachs models are equivalent.  The Lassard model is equivalent to the Gamma or Damodaran mode, and both models yielded estimates closer to the SalomonSmithBarney model. All the models’ estimates for the Turkish investment are consistent with the credit ratings of both Turkey and South Africa. The cost equity estimates show that FirstRand Limited investors will demand an additional risk premium for investments in Turkey. The cost of equity estimates for the Irish investment are mixed, inconsistent with the Ireland’s credit rating and had a higher standard deviation than the estimates for the Turkish investment. The Irish estimates seem to be largely affected by the country’s high country and banking industry betas. The reverse-engineered versions of these models are suitable for use by firms in emerging countries

    Development Of Psychometrically Validated Standardized Test Instruments For Outcomes Assessment In Experiential Engineering Education

    There is a major trend in engineering education to provide students with realistic hands-on learning experiences. This paper reports on the results of work done to develop standardized test instruments to use for student learning outcomes assessment in an experiential hands-on manufacturing engineering and technology environment. The specific outcomes targeted for assessment are those defined under the MILL (Manufacturing Integrated Learning Laboratory) Manufacturing Competency Model. In a unique feature aimed at experiential learning, the test instruments incorporate the use of a physical manipulative to evaluate attainment of particular hands-on skills. The resulting standardized tests have been subjected to extensive psychometric analysis. The results of the analysis indicate excellent structure of the test instruments. The test instruments have shown high levels of stability, internal consistency, and reliability. These tests can be used as instruments for outcomes assessment to help document attainment of targeted learning outcomes for program assessment, accreditation, and other assessment purposes.     Using Data To Enhance Decision Making: Graduation Initiative 2025

    The California State University launched its Graduation Initiative 2025 in January 2015 with a clear goal to increase graduation rates for our 475,000 students across all 23 campuses.  The Graduation Initiative 2025 will add 100,000 more baccalaureate degree-educated citizens to California over the next ten years and begin to meet workforce demands. Increasing graduation rates, particularly for first-generation students, requires a strategic, data-driven approach. California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) faces particular challenges as 81% of our undergraduate population are first-generation college students, 63% receive Pell Grant, and 56% of incoming first-year students require some form of developmental coursework in English, math, or both.  Data-driven decision-making must be used to focus graduation efforts.  CSUSB organizes data regarding college readiness, and enrollment characteristics as preparedness have a direct influence on time to degree.  Data on persistence and progress towards the degree are also important to track when examining graduation rates as it helps identify areas to improve.  Finally, data on completion and post-graduation are indicators to track the progress of the initiative and meeting workforce demands.&nbsp
