The Changes In Calendars In The Ancient World As A Tool To Teach The Development Of Astronomy
When teaching an introductory science survey course to college students learning astronomy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, we have devoted four hours to teaching the history of astronomy as a fruitful strategy to introduce important concepts surrounding the development of general scientific knowledge throughout history. In order to illustrate the impact of improved accuracy of astronomical measurements, we propose using the example the development of the calendars and, in particular, the widespread Hebrew calendars used throughout the adjacent Millennia of B.C. and A.C. The changes in the several determinations of the Hebrew calendar are demonstrated based on Babylonian and Jewish documents as well as works by al-Khwarizmi from the 9th century AD, found in the Khuda Bakhsh Oriental Library, in Patna India. Our experience suggests that the teaching of calendar development and evolutions demonstrates the interconnectedness between scientific endeavors and social-religious traditions
Improving Your Argument By Identifying A Literature Gap
More often than not, a peer-reviewed journal article’s literature review is a boring to read as it is to write. However, literature reviews do not need to be laborious for all involved. Instead, the best literature reviews offer a crisp view of a researcher’s landscape and succinctly provides a compelling case for critical research that needs to be done in order to move the field forward. In order to provide readers with a useful literature review, it is critical that authors avoid providing paragraph after paragraph describing a summative chronology of the topic in the literature, but instead provide a critical synthesis of what is known, and what is not known about a topic. In the end, if the reader is convinced of what will be known and advanced as a result of a researcher undertaking the considerable time and effort to conduct and publish a given study, the reader is much more likely to cite your paper downstream in their own work
Who Wants an iPad? An Exercise In Rationing
This active learning exercise demonstrates the fundamental problem in economics that resources are scarce, while wants are relatively infinite. Students are exposed to four mechanisms for rationing scare resources: markets, queue, coupons, and lottery. An Apple iPad® pre-loaded with music, videos, and games is used as the good to be rationed. The uncertain value of the good allows for differences in willingness to pay. Students are guided through an exercise that highlights the efficiency/equity tradeoffs in different allocation mechanisms by observing who gets the iPad in each round and whether any secondary market transactions occur to change the allocation
A Look At The Merchant Marine Act Of 1920: Is It Time For The U.S. To Change Course?
Due to recent changes in global shipping, we investigate the Merchant Marine Act of 1920 – also known as the Jones Act. When constructed, our governing body decided that the Act was necessary for the country’s naval defenses and for proper growth of foreign and domestic commerce. The plan was for the fleet to be owned and operated privately by citizens of the United States. However, in today’s economic conditions some are wondering if the Jones Act is a liability to foreign commerce. In our work, we explore the advantages of naval defense and shipbuilding as well as the disadvantages on commerce and U.S. transportation infrastructure. To conclude, we offer opinions for policy changes to create a more level playing field for the U.S. to compete in global logistics
Collaborative Argumentation As A Learning Strategy To Improve Student Performance In Engineering Statics: A Pilot Study
Educators have used argumentation to help students understand mathematical ideas which often appear abstract to the novice learner. A preliminary investigation was conducted to determine if collaborative argumentation is a strategy that can improve the student’s conceptual understanding of the topics taught in the engineering course commonly titled Statics. The academic performance of students enrolled in a traditional problems-solving session was compared to the academic performance of students enrolled in a problem-solving session where collaborative argumentation was used. Results suggest that argumentation improved student performance as measured by grades associated with one-hour long exams, although student written responses on a course evaluation survey responses indicate that students did not believe argumentation was a learning strategy was effective.
Sustainability Via Servicing: From Individual Action To Institutional Action
The servicizing of products constitutes a powerful tool to reduce the environmental footprint of the stages of a product’s physical resources life cycle, ultimately to yield a more sustainable solution. It can be achieved via the co-creation of various clean services (CleanServs) by individuals. But to achieve the goal of sustainable consumption will require increasing the pace of development of organized and mass-use frameworks like, for example, shareconomy and eco-labeling. In this frame, the notion of the product-service system (PSS), which offers access to a solution rather than ownership of the goods or assets needed for that solution, also promotes greater responsibility and higher levels of obligation on the parts of both provider and customer
Marketing Architectural And Engineering Services: A Portfolio Approach
This article has been written as a theoretical guide for architectural and engineering firms to develop a strong services marketing plan for the geographic location in which it operates. It will outline a step by step approach to develop, administer, and utilize this services marketing approach. It will also outline the logic and understanding to support this claim
Teaching The Bid-Ask Spread And Triangular Arbitrage For The Foreign Exchange Market
The foreign exchange (FX) market is an important chapter in international finance. Understanding the market microstructure is critical for learning the FX market. To assist students better understand the FX market microstructure, an instructor can use an event study with minute-by-minute quote data provided in the Excel assignment, asking students to investigate the impact of an event on the bid-ask spread and triangular arbitrage opportunities. This pedagogical paper provides two examples of making the Excel assignment for reference
How To Record Journal Entries Correctly For Bonds Issued At A Discount Or A Premium? Hint: Follow The Money
A factor that complicates the posting of the journal entries related to the issue of bonds is that the amount of money received by the issuing company may be different from the face value of the bond. If the bond stated rate is higher than the market interest rate at the time of issue of the bond, the company can sell the bond at a premium; on the other hand, if the stated rate is lower than the market interest rate, the company will be forced to sell the bond at a discount. Another complicating factor is that the issuing company has to make interest payments at regular time intervals throughout the life of the bond and a final payment on the date of the maturity of the bond. Many students of Accounting, especially at the undergraduate level, find the journal entries related to the treatment of bond discounts and premiums very confusing, since they are spread over many years, spanning the entire life of the bond, unlike the numerous other journal entries covering the annual operating activities of the company. In this paper, some hints and guidelines are provided with the goal of helping the studentsrecord the journal entries correctly when bonds are sold at a discount or a premium
The Importance Of Entrepreneurial Competencies On The Performance Of Women Entrepreneurs In South Africa
The study investigated the importance of entrepreneurial competencies on the performance of women entrepreneurs in East London, South Africa. The objectives of this study were to identify key entrepreneurial competencies that influence the performance of women entrepreneurs, to establish a relationship between entrepreneurial competencies and the performance of women entrepreneurs and to suggest strategies that can be implemented to improve entrepreneurial competencies of women entrepreneurs. Both primary and secondary data source were used in this research. This research followed a quantitative research design. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect primary data. The findings of this research showed that entrepreneurial competencies are crucial for the survival and performance of SMMEs
