Ethnic Identity Among Chinese Indonesians in the Post-Suharto Era : Study Based on Interview Surveys in Surabaya

    Get PDF
This study considers ethnic Chinese identity in Indonesia following the collapse of the Suharto regime in 1998. Until now, there has been no common denominator for either passing on the Chinese language, or being aware of one's identity as an Indonesian ethnic Chinese. This demonstrates identity to be something transformed in response to differing interactions and negotiations between setting, circumstances, people, and society. In the present situation after ethnic Chinese have regained cultural freedom and control over language use, we were able to conduct interviews with eleven Chinese Indonesians in 2013, who were raised as members of the post-Suharto generation and were likely to understand the changes brought about on ethnic Chinese identity. The results did not show that clear changes in identity had resulted from the era transition or between generations. While the informants clearly understood their Chinese ethnicity in the context of the historical era shifts, they also expressed pride at being ethnically Chinese, which strengthened in response to the trauma of the preexisting discrimination that has continued. Moreover, the pressure to integrate, to be an "Indonesian," and the contrasting awareness that accompanies their prioritization of not to be pribumi, but rather ethnic Chinese, are seen to coexist. This study considers ethnic Chinese identity in Indonesia following the collapse of the Suharto regime in 1998. Translation and Annotation of "The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art(九章算術)" Vol. 22

    Get PDF
"The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art" was the oldest book of mathematics in China before the unearthing of "Suan-shu shu." The aim of our research is to provide a complete translation and annotation of it including annotations of Liu Hui(劉徽)and Li Chunfeng(李淳風)from the viewpoint of our previous work on "Suan-shu shu." This is the twenty-second article based on our research and results in which we studied the problems 5 to 10 of Chapter 7, Yingbuzu(盈不足)."The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art" was the oldest book of mathematics in China before the unearthing of "Suan-shu shu." Usefulness of Growth Measurements for Preventing Obesity After Birth

    Get PDF
The objective of the present study is to investigate the usefulness of growth measurements for preventing obesity based on the onset of adiposity rebound (AR) and the characteristics of allometry as determined from body mass index (BMI) measurements taken after birth. The height, body weight, and BMI of 18 one-year-old children at a nursery school(14 boys, 4 girls) were monitored. A quadratic equation was applied to the obtained BMI, and the lowest point was taken to be the age at AR. An allometric equation between the logarithms of height and body weight was derived, and its slope was determined. Based on the results, subjects were classified into type A, in which the BMI after birth changed along the percentile curve for standard values, and type B, in which the BMI decreased by changing from a high-percentile curve to a low-percentile curve. Age at AR was lower for subjects at or above the 75th percentile compared to those below the 75th percentile. In addition, subjects with a steep slope for the allometric equation tended to be type A. The key finding was that monitoring allometry, rather than age at AR alone, is also necessary in order to prevent future obesity. The objective of the present study is to investigate the usefulness of growth measurements for preventing obesity based on the onset of adiposity rebound (AR) and the characteristics of allometry as determined from body mass index (BMI) measurements taken after birth. Concerning" Reliability" in Personnel Evaluation Systems : Focus on Analytical Study of" Company A" Without an Established Personnel Evaluation System

    Get PDF
Personnel evaluation systems are linked to the treatment and transfer (mobility) of employees, thus, they must ensure fairness and accuracy of evaluation, assuring their "reliability" to those doing the evaluation and employees being evaluated. Previous studies have shown the need for fairness and clarity of the evaluation criteria used in the evaluation procedure so that the full consent of the employees is secured. This study analyzes "Company A," which evaluates its employees without using an established personnel evaluation system. Here it also discusses some of the problems that arise in this situation, and suggests some ideas for redirection and improvement.Personnel evaluation systems are linked to the treatment and transfer (mobility) of employees, thus, they must ensure fairness and accuracy of evaluation, assuring their "reliability" to those doing the evaluation and employees being evaluated.
