    The term ulama>’ is identical to having men characteristics. It is undeniable that during the history of Islam, there were many women ulama>’ with their great contributions on the islamic magnicience and missionaries in the mids of behavioral decadence. In Indonesia, a little attention was given to women ulama>’, while the islamic boarding school (pesantren) has played important role to create them in terms of social empowerment. This study is aimed to address a bibliographical significance of an older woman, or what Javanese popularly known, ‘Nyai’ Makkiah As’ad from Pamekasan, Madura. This study attemps to explore critical contributions of Nyai Makkiah As’ad as moral guider around the pesantrens in Pamekasan. It has been concluded that Nyai Makkiah As’ad mets preconditional requirements of being called ‘ulama’, including having religious capacity to be a professional Muslim proselytizer, having social sense of belonging in the mids of heterogeneous people, having a moral sense of adaptivity in dealing with many social issues, having leadership character to be a prominent figure in some pesantrens in Pamekasan, and having an ulama’ linkage genealogy as daughter of Nahdlatul Ulama leader, Kyai As’ad Syamsul Arifin, with spreadly high influence in Java

Thus  need for dialogue between the two civilizations which aims to break down misunderstandings, because basically in the existence of Western civilization-Christian, there is the role of Eastern civilization-Islam is very large, and vice versa in the formation of Eastern civilization-Islam, Christians also have a very vital role.     Pesantren as an educational institution has its own characteristics, so that schools can be distinguished from other educational institutions. Characteristic of schools considered to be very unique by the observer of education, from tradition, curriculum, education system, infrastructure, kiai leadership models, and also the lifestyle of the students were very simple and put together. So that attract many researchers to continue research and study of the pesantren. Management of pesantren education can not be separated from the role of kiai. Kiai has a major role that determines the course of the management of all schools. At the pesantren kyiai is a figure who occupied as the highest structrue in the management of the school. Kiai which controls and determines everything in pesantren. Kiai has demonstrated success in managing the schools, from the first starting early embryo until now in the face of development. It can be seen from the rapid increase in the number of students from year to year and owned infrastructure continues to increase and the quality of students in terms of their knowledge is not inferior to the products of non pesantren education institutions

    Lately, the development of modernization has come with all its effects in human life: positive and negative. Although modernization appears to us to bring the various developments that can be utilized by humans, but on the other hand has resulted in national values and religious order kehidupanan increasingly detached from humanity. It can be seen from the rampant corruption, collusion, nepotism, terrorism, drugs, free sex and same-sex mating, immoral, and other immoral behavior. This phenomenon certainly can not be allowed to continue rampant, should be dammed one of which can be reached through education monotheism educational institutions. In the perspective of Islam, monotheism is the main foundation in building the personality of a person included in the build pradaban public life. Therefore, construction of learning pendidika monotheism in Islam or Islamic institutions must continue to be built, so that the institution can realize learning well, that is capable of transmitting knowledge and religious values on the students themselves. It is none other than as a strengthening of the identity of the students as a generation of nation and religion are responsible for building pradaban in the future.     The term ‘Tasawuf Nusantara’ (archipelago’s sufism) gets influence from two major models of sufism order: falsafiyah order and sunniyah order. The former was popularly called as monoism, while the latter was dualism. This study is to formulate a conceptual framework of Abdurrahman Wahid (or mostly known as Gus Dur)’s idea on tasawuf. The typical ground of Gus Dur’s sufism is under analysis on the basis of both orders. This study uses a descriptive approch to research in order to address a fundamental question: which one of these two models of tasawuf that Gus Dur could be included? After gathering data, the conclusion of this study is that Gus Dur has been grounded in the monoism order which is later framed into islamic religiousity, indonesia nationality, and mistycal spirituality

    The main function of educational supervision is to maintain the quality of management. A supervisor has to ascertain that learning and teaching process is basicly in line with national standards of education. Additionally, a supervisor has to do some important functions, including facilitating, choching, and guiding of teachers to advance their quality of teaching. The improvement of quality of education could be possible by increasing professionalism of teaching and learning, and hence the need for supervision of education as a partnership of teachers is necessary for advancing their competency and knowledge. This study attempts to figure out the role of educational supervision in Sumenep, Madura, in order to encourage teachers’ competencies and improve the better learning process. By using descriptive based qualitative approach, this study is aimed to address teacher’s performance and competence in educational system. The study provides a sympthomatic result that a lack of supervision has effects on the some degrees of decreased quality of education in Sumenep. It is a side-effect of some causes: burdened scope of tasks, lower level of teacher’s motivation, and any limited access of islamic institutions. However, some educational advisors in Sumenep get started with some efforts of improving the quality of teacher’s performance. They have encouraged them to actively get inovolve with forum of teacher workgroup and to attend some seminars, training, and workshop

    A Gus Dur’s terminological reference ‘Sub-Culture’ to Pesantren indicates that this institution is closely related to society. It is because of a fact that pesantren has been developed from, by, and for society. From its initial function as literate society, a center for reduction of social illiteracy, until as cultural literacy, a castle of socio-cultural defense, this institution has became an archipelago-based-islamic institution and a center of Muslim civilization in its intelectual roots of tradition, including al-turats, genealogical lineage of science, etc. At-turats (kitab kuning) serves as a medium of networking ulama’ in the spreading of islamic knowledge. The tradition of at-turats and the moral relationship between teachers and students has became social ground of pesantren building. This relationship has been embedded into the tradition of at-turats in order to maintain the genealogical linkage of science transmission (sanad). Instead of contradictionary, these elements are complementary for maintaining Pesantren as ‘sub-culture’
