    Relationship between efficiency and profitability: The case of Czech swine sector

    Aim of study: To examine the link between economic efficiency and profitability of firms belonging to the swine sector.Area of study: This study is devoted to the Czech swine sector that forms the traditional and essential part of agriculture in the Czech Republic.Material and methods: Data from the Albertina CZ Gold Edition database for the period 2008-2017 were used. To evaluate the economic efficiency, the data envelopment analysis models are applied. Return on equity, return on assets and return on sales are used to measure profitability. To assess the relationship between economic efficiency and profitability, the Pearson correlation coefficient is used.Main results: The results demonstrate that there is no clear link between the economic efficiency of firms and their profitability in this industry. The correlation between all three profitability ratios and efficiency score were predominantly positive but not statistically significant in many cases. The economies of scale and scope and the construction of profitability indicators could be the main factors explaining the fact that companies achieving higher efficiency are not also more profitable.Research highlights: The study provides material useful to owners, managers, and customers of Czech agriculture firms. It identifies the relatively high efficiency of firms measured relatively to the best Czech company. In the European context, however, the efficiency of Czech firms belonging to the swine sector is low. It also reveals that the profitability of the firms is not a representative proxy for economic efficiency

    Hematological parameters, liver integrity and growth of Nile tilapia fingerlings fed diets supplemented with propolis extract

    Aim of study: To assess the effects of propolis extract supplementation in diets for Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fingerlings on growth performance, hematological and histological parameters. Area of study: The study was carried out in Paraná (Brazil). Material and methods: The experimental design was based on six treatments including the control diet and propolis supplementation (2%, 4%, 6%, 8% and 10% in the diet). Three hundred Nile tilapia fingerlings, with an initial weight of 0.61± 0.02 g, were distributed in 30 plastic mesh hapas (0.15 m3 each) arranged in a concrete tank of 25 m3 of water volume. The duration of the experimental period was 90 days. Main results: The increasing levels of propolis did not influence the growth performance and proximate composition of fishes. Red blood cells and hematological indices were not affected by propolis supplementation. However, total leukocytes and thrombocytes were higher in fish fed on propolis diets, being significant in fish fed 2% and 8%, and 6% and 8% supplemented diets groups, respectively. Research highlights: The supplementation of propolis alcoholic extract in the range of 2, 4, 6 and 8% in the diet for Nile tilapia fingerlings promote healthier fish with increased immunity in the evaluated culture conditions

    Virulence and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) biosynthesis ability of Turkish Pseudomonas savastanoi pv. savastanoi isolates and susceptibility of some native olive genotypes

    Aim of study: To evaluate the virulence and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) biosynthesis ability of several Turkish P. savastanoi pv. savastanoi isolates and the susceptibility of some native genotypes to olive knot. Area of study: The Aegean, Marmara, and Mediterranean Regions of Turkey. Material and methods: 101 isolated bacteria were identified on the basis of biochemical, PCR for amplification of the bacterial iaaL gene, and pathogenicity tests. The virulence of the isolates was determined in a randomized experimental trial carried out by stem inoculation of pot-grown seedlings of olive (cv. ‘Manzanilla’) in the growing chamber. The amounts of IAA produced by the isolates were determined colorimetrically. The susceptibility of native olive genotypes was evaluated on 2-yr old plants inoculated with two distinct strains. Main results: Tested P. savastanoi pv. savastanoi isolates showed significant differences in virulence found to be associated with their geographical origin. The isolates produced IAA amounts varied from 148.67 to 0.3 μg mL-1. The geographical variation in IAA biosynthesis ability of the isolates was observed. No correlation (R=0.0225) was determined between virulence and IAA amounts of the isolates. Native olive genotypes indicated different susceptibility levels to the olive knot pathogen. No genotype tested had complete resistance. However, low susceptible genotypes (‘Memecik’, ‘Ayvalık’ and ‘Uslu’) were identified. Some genotypes had variable reactions depending on the isolate used. Research highlights: The results undergird the differences in the virulence and IAA production of the isolates within the area and also between geographical locations. Genotypes with low susceptibility can be used as genitors in further breeding studies.&nbsp

    Age-age correlations and prediction of early selection age for diameter growth in a 35-years old Pinus brutia Ten. Genetic experiment

    Aim of study: Forest geneticists developed various methods to predict an early selection age for forest tree species in order to shorten the breeding cycles. This study aims to estimate age-age correlations among diameter growth of trees at different ages and predict early selection age for Pinus brutia Ten. Area of study: P. brutia populations in the study were sampled from the most productive distribution range of the species, which is an important forest tree in the eastern Mediterranean Basin. To understand genetic variation and determine early selection age for the species, a common garden experiment was established in two test sites near Antalya city, Turkey, in 1979. Material and methods: Wood increment cores at breast height were collected at age 30 years, and diameters (dbh) were measured for the ages 13, 15, 19, 21, 23, 25, and 27 years on the cores.  Diameters at ground level (dgl) and dbh were also measured on live trees at age 35. Variance components, age-age correlations, heritability and selection efficiency were estimated for the diameters. Main results: Age-age genetic correlations for diameters were high (mostly > 0.90). Genetic correlations between dgl (at age 35) and dbh (at all measurement ages) ranged from 0.84 to 0.99. Regressions of genetic correlation on natural log of age ratio (LAR) of juvenile age to older age were significant (P < 0.0001). Selection efficiencies estimated by employing the prediction equation indicated that for rotation age 40, the optimum selection age would be between 3 to 5 years, and for rotation age 100 it would be between 5 to 9 years. Research highlights: The results of this study provide information that can be used to find early selection ages in P. brutia. On relatively poor test sites most trees may not attain enough height growth to have measurable dbh trait. In such cases, dgl and/or tree height traits (both of which are highly correlated with dbh traits of all ages) can be measured and used instead of dbh trait for evaluations.     Soil organic carbon accumulation and carbon dioxide emissions during a 6-year study in irrigated continuous maize under two tillage systems in semiarid Mediterranean conditions

    Aim of study: To evaluate the effects of conventional tillage (CT) and no tillage (NT) systems on the soil organic carbon (SOC) changes, CO2 emissions and their relation with soil temperature and grain yield in a monoculture of irrigated maize during six years.Area of study: In Zamadueñas experimental field in the Spanish province of Valladolid, from 2011 to 2017.Material and methods: The SOC content was determined by collecting soil samples up to 30 cm in November at two years interval. Short-term CO2 emissions were measured simultaneously with soil temperature using a respiration chamber and a hand-held probe immediately before, after every tillage operation and during the maize cycle.Main results: The SOC stock of the top 30 cm soil layers was 13% greater under NT than CT. Short-term CO2 emissions were significantly higher under CT ranging from 0.8 to 3.4 g CO2 m-2 h-1 immediately after tillage while under NT system, soil CO2 fluxes were low and stable during this study period. During the first 48 h following tillage, cumulative CO2 emissions ranged from 0.6 to 2.4 Mg CO2 ha-1 and from 0.2 to 0.3 Mg CO2 ha-1 under CT and NT systems, respectively. Soil temperature did not show significant correlation with CO2 emissions; however, it depended mostly on the time of measurement.Research highlights: No tillage increased the SOC accumulation in the topsoil layer, reduced CO2 emissions without decreasing maize grain yield and minimized the impact on climate change compared to CT system

    Using theory of consumption values to predict organic food purchase intention: Role of health consciousness and eco-friendly LOHAS tendency

    Aim of study: The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between eco-friendly LOHAS (Lifestyle of Health and Sustainability) tendency, health consciousness, perceived value of organic food and organic food purchase intention in the framework of personality-perception-behavioral intention.Area of study: Turkey.Material and methods: Data were collected from consumers using structured questionnaires. The research model was analyzed with the Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling technique.Main results: Results show that eco-friendly LOHAS tendency (β= 0.292, p<0.01), health consciousness (β=0.140, p<0.05), emotional value (β=0.282, p<0.01), and social value (β=0.099, p<0.05) positively influence intention to purchase organic food, whereas financial value and functional value were not significantly related to intention to purchase organic food. Furthermore, eco-friendly LOHAS tendency and health consciousness are positively related to all dimensions of perceived value of organic food.Research highlights: Findings point out that affective dimension of perceived value of organic food is more considerable than cognitive dimension in a developing country. Emotional value of organic food is more important for consumers who have high level of eco-friendly LOHAS tendency while functional value of organic food is more essential for consumers who a have high level of health consciousness

    Characterization of cowpea to harvest rainwater for wheat in semiarid conditions

    Aim of study: A field experiment was executed, under rainfed conditions from 2014-15 to 2017-18, to study the role of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.) in rainwater harvesting to enhance the wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) yield.Area of study: Rain-fed area of Pothwar region, Punjab, Pakistan.Material and methods: We designed three treatments (T1: control; T2: cowpea grown after conventional tillage and incorporated into soil to act as “green manure”; and T3: grown without any tillage practice, cut with sickle and spread as “mulch”). The effect of these treatments on soil moisture conservation was studied against conventional farmer’s practice, wherein no host crop is grown before wheat sowing.Main results: Available soil water remained highest in T2 during first three years when sufficient rainfall was received contrary to fourth year with low rainfall. The results revealed that cowpea biomass of 15.2 t/ha and 13.72 t/ha, from T2 and T3 respectively, were produced during 2015 corresponding to 213 mm rainfall. Whereas, these quantities increased to 25.69 t/ha and 24.29 t/ha during 2017 with 387 mm of rainfall. The study revealed that net income from wheat crop under T2 was Rs 13000 and Rs 9000 per hectare higher than that of control during the first two years respectively. Contrarily, net income from T2 was found negative and benefit-cost ratio reduced to 0.79 when very low rainfall was received during the last year.Research highlights: Use of cowpea as green manure gave maximum net return if sufficient rainfall is received during decomposition of cowpea and hence recommended for in-situ rainwater harvesting
