    Economic profitability of agroforestry in nitrate vulnerable zones in Catalonia (NE Spain)

    The impact of agricultural practices and the excess application of nitrogen can negatively impact the environment and cause human health problems. In Spain, the liquid manure applied in areas of intensive agriculture is creating groundwater nitrate pollution problems. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the economic profitability of agroforestry practices in North East Spain. Therefore, it deals with an alternative land use that has attracted attention in recent years, considering its potential to reduce the negative impact of modern agriculture that combines concurrent forestry and agricultural production in the same area. Specifically, silvoarable practices, such as alley cropping (AC), edge row planting and riparian buffer (RB) strips were compared to conventional agricultural land use. Considering the current agricultural policy framework in Spain, which does not favour these practices, our results showed the economic profitability of alley-cropping practices in comparison to conventional barley production of 25 to 64 € ha-1 yr-1. However, AC systems presented negative results compared to the traditional wheat crop (-122 to -63 € ha-1 yr-1). The results for RB strips were strongly influenced by the high initial costs, both in irrigated and non-irrigated scenarios. Economic results were negative (between -137 and -85 € ha-1 yr-1) compared to the conventional crops, barley and corn. These figures could be greatly increased with a policy framework that promotes these practices based on the fundamental ecosystem services they provide. Moreover, these practices allow an economic diversification that could prove to be beneficial for the majority of farmers

    A new classification of European Union regions: A decision support tool for policymakers

    The classification of agricultural and territorial systems is essential to improve the comparability of regions for the development programmers of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), to give new tools of intervention to policymakers and to increase farmers’ knowledge. Analysis of the principal characteristics of these systems is essential during a time in which the new CAP is being designed for the period 2021-2027. The research is focused on the analysis of the agricultural features of 228 regional areas (NUTS 2) of the 28 European Union (EU) countries. It considers two specific sets of environmental and socio-economic indicators provided by the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN). The main factors that differentiate agricultural systems in EU regions from one another were identified with the application of principal component analysis, while the classification of the same regions in homogeneous groups was carried out through hierarchical cluster analysis. The results clearly show that some groups of “homogeneous” EU regions such as the Natura 2000 area and the family-run agricultural system, which have weaker agricultural structures than the average of the 228 EU regions considered in this study, have a greater need for the restructuring of their agricultural systems than others (e.g., the professional agricultural system and the food industry system). The results confirm that policy design should not consider EU agriculture as a whole, but should take into account the environmental and structural specificities of agricultural holdings, as well as the different training levels of farm managers

    A further look of the genetic origin and singularity of the Torbiscal Iberian pig line

    Although the Torbiscal line of Iberian pigs has been largely studied, some aspects of its history are not well known. In this paper, we used pedigree-based methods on a complete genealogy of 4,077 entries in order to get a comprehensive analysis of its four founder strains and to evaluate the expected genetic contribution of each ancestral strain to the successive generations of the composite Torbiscal line. Between-strain differences and specific heterotic effects on piglet weight at 50 days of age were estimated from records of 9,052 piglets born in 1,571 litters of a complete diallel cross among the four strains. Moreover, we assessed the genetic singularity of the current Torbiscal pigs by other three studies, based on whole genome SNP genotypes, focused on the measure of its genetic diversity and differentiation with respect to other domestic and wild pig populations. The STRUCTURE algorithm detected two uppermost levels of the whole population structure, corresponding to European and Asian ancestries. These results confirmed the exclusive European origin of the Torbiscal and other Iberian pigs and the admixed origin of the Duroc breed. Finally, the comparison of Torbiscal with a representative pool of Iberian pigs showed a maximum genetic differentiation in regions of chromosomes three and seven, including some genes related to the regulation of muscle development

    Soil and foliar applied boron in olive: tree crop growth and yield, and boron remobilization within plant tissues

    Boron (B) has great importance in the fertilizer recommendation programs of olive, since B deficiency is a frequent nutritional disorder. This paper reports results of the olive response to applied B from two 3-year field trials (ExpF1, ExpF2) and two pot experiments (ExpP1, ExpP2). The ExpF1 was installed in a 3-year-old orchard and the ExpF2 consisted of planting young trees with the aboveground biomass yield being recorded. In ExpP1, B was applied to the soil or as a foliar spray to the whole of the canopy. The ExpP2 consisted of the application of B to selected parts of the canopy. The concentration of B in the existing tissues receiving the spray directly and in the new shoots developing after the B application was determined. The performance of the crop, including olive yield, did not increase in ExpF1 with soil-applied B. However, dry matter yield of young plants in ExpF2 significantly increased with B application. The application of B, both as a soil fertilizer and as a foliar spray, significantly increased the B concentration in all tissues and in all experiments. From ExpP1, soil applied B proved to be a more powerful tool of delivering high amounts of B to the plant than foliar spray. From ExpP2, B was shown to be mobile in the tree to some extent, although the mobility appears to be cultivar-dependent. In 'Arbequina' the older leaves that received the foliar spray showed higher B levels than the young leaves that developed thereafter, whereas in 'Cobrançosa' this difference was not observed

    Effect of warming temperatures on donkey sperm vitrification in 0.5 mL straws in comparison to conventional freezing

    Aim of study: There is little information about vitrification of sperm in large volumes (up to 0.5 mL). This study aimed to develop the vitrification technique in 0.5 mL straws in donkey sperm, evaluating the effect of three warming temperatures.Area of study: Cordoba, Spain.Material and methods: Ejaculates from five donkeys were divided in four groups: one control subjected to conventional slow freezing (C) and three vitrified in 0.5 mL straws and warmed using different protocols (W1: 37ºC/30s, W2: 43ºC/20s and W3: 70ºC/8s+37ºC/52s). Sperm motility, kinematic parameters, plasma membrane and acrosome integrity were evaluated. Conventional freezing resulted in significantly higher values for total (42.7±19.6%), and progressive motility (30.3±16.7%), plasma membrane (49.1±10.4%) and acrosome integrity (39.6±14.5%) respect to vitrification method.Main results: Values after warming ranged between 0.2-2.8% for total motility; 0.2-2.1% for progressive motility; 5.5-20.0% for plasma membrane integrity and 14.5-29.8% for acrosome integrity in all warming protocols after sperm vitrification. However, no differences were found between W3 and C for kinematic parameters; and W3 resulted in significantly higher values for membrane integrity (20.0±11.0%) in comparison to W1 (5.5±3.6%) and W2 (9.3±8.4%).Research highlights: High warming rates seem to be better for donkey sperm vitrification in large volumes; but this methodology is still not an alternative to conventional sperm freezing

    Water-bath stunning process in broiler chickens: Effects of voltage and intensity

    The effect of electrical parameters (intensity and voltage) to obtain an effective water-bath stunning in a commercial poultry slaughterhouse was studied. A total of 390 broilers were randomly divided into six experimental groups according to the intensity (150 and 200 mA) and voltage (51-60, 61-80 and 81-100 V). Statistical analysis showed a significant (p<0.001) effect of electrical parameters on the cloacal reflex since the response rate was 8 s for 96% of broilers. On the other hand, the stunning treatments suppressed the palpebral reflex up to 12 s in 80% of broilers. All stun-treated broilers showed breathing response after 27 s with an average time between 45 and 50 s depending on voltage and intensity of the current. Regarding voltage, the percentage of complete neck cutting increased with the increase of voltage, presenting the highest levels in broilers stunned at 81-100 V (100 and 92.8%, for 150 and 200 mA, respectively). Concerning to intensity, the best results were obtained in broilers stunned at 150 mA, showing mean percentages of 94.83 and 87.30%, for 150 and 200 mA, respectively. The bruises on wings were significantly (p<0.001) affected by voltage, observing the highest values in broilers slaughtered at lower voltages. An opposite trend was observed on bruises under the wings since the lowest voltages showed (p<0.001) lower levels (1.34 and 1.42%, for 150 and 200 mA, respectively). Finally, bruises on dorsal winds and on back were significantly (p<0.001) influenced by intensity level, showing the lowest percentages in broilers stunned at 150 mA

    Evaluation of poultry manure and goat cheese whey anaerobic co-digestion

    Hen droppings (HD) and Goat Cheese Whey (GCW) are two difficult substrates to be treated by anaerobic digestion due to their characteristics; however, their co-digestion offers the possibility of successfully treating these substrates together. The goal of this study was to evaluate the anaerobic co-digestion of HD and GCW at laboratory scale in order to determine biogas potential and possible operational problems before extrapolating results to a full-scale biogas plant. The potential methane production of HD, GCW and a mixture of both substrates was studied in batch mode, whereas the co-digestion of the mixture of HD and GCW was also studied in semi-continuous mode in a continuously stirred tank reactor. Results showed that the addition of GCW to HD increased methane production compared to HD alone; however, GCW alone showed the highest methane potential. In semi-continuous mode, the mixture of GCW and HD showed high biogas and methane yields (582.0±29.5 Lbiogas kg VS-1 and 381.2±19.0 LCH4 kg VS-1, respectively), although intense foaming incidents occurred. The composition of both substrates is complementary for their co-digestion and it improved the energy yield of the process. However, the economic viability of a biogas plant of 30 kWe, designed for treating HD and GCW, would be economically feasible only with subsidies for the investment and in the low range of investment costs for small scale biogas plants

    Morphological and germination capacity of Argania spinosa’s (L) Skeels of Algeria South-West population: variability of fruit and stone morphotypes

    Aim of study: The purpose of our study is the highlighting of phenotypic variability within the natural population of Argania spinosa (L.) Skeels by morphological characterization of fruits and stones and by evaluation germination capacity of stones.Area of study: The Argan tree stand is located in southwest of Algeria (Tindouf).Material and Methods: The fruits were collected on a sample of 30 mother trees for three consecutive years. We carried out the morpho-biometric characterization (shapes, dimensions and weight) of thirty fruits and thirty stones from each mother-tree, and assessed the germination capacity of the different morphotypes.Main results: We found high variability of morphological characters of fruits and stones between trees. Five fruits shapes (oval, avoid, rounded, spherical and very spherical) and three different stones shapes (oval, avoid and spherical) were identified in mother-trees. The rounded, spherical and very spherical shapes of fruits are the most abundant (82%). High variability in the germination capacity of the different Argan tree genotypes and strong correlation were emphasised between capacity germination and stones shape and dimensions. Multivariate analysis showed that trees with small-sized, spherical stones showed better germination (98%) than trees with larger and elongated (oval) stones (51%). However, no significant difference was found between harvest years for any studied trait.Research highlights: Results of this research allows the selection of mother- trees to improve the production of seedlings in nursery, to successful regeneration and to ensure conservation and sustainable use of the genetic resources of this rare and endangered species.Keywords: Argania spinosa; variability; morphological; fruits; stones; germination capacity

    Effect of material ageing and dirt on the behaviour of greenhouse insect-proof screens

    The present work examines the variations in the aerodynamic characteristics of four insect-proof screens by means of wind tunnel tests and digital image processing. The tested insect-proof screens were examined in three different conditions: (i) in their new, unused state; (ii) under conditions of accumulated dust and dirt after a period of 3 to 4 years of use; and (iii) under clean conditions after a period of 3 to 4 years of use and a cleaning treatment with high-pressure water. The deterioration of the screens caused the mesh to become less tense, therefore increasing its thickness and improving its aerodynamic behaviour despite a slight increase of the thread diameter and a subsequent decrease of the 2-dimensional porosity. The pressure drop coefficient, Fφ, of the used but clean screens was 1.5% to 8.8% lower (for u=1.0 m/s) than that of the new ones, thus increasing the discharge coefficient, Cd,φ, by between 0.8% and 4.8% as a result of the presence of the screens. On the other hand, comparison of the used screens in their clean and unclean states showed that the accumulation of dirt has a major bearing on their aerodynamic characteristics: Fφ increased by between 16.5% and 61.2% (for u=1.0 m/s) for the unclean screens, resulting in a Cd,φ reduction of between 7.5% and 21.3% and therefore a lower natural ventilation capacity of the greenhouse. A regular cleaning treatment of the insect-proof screens is a simple measure that improves the natural ventilation capacity of the greenhouse

    Determinants of sorghum adoption and land allocation intensity in the smallholder sector of semi-arid Zimbabwe

    Sorghum is important for sustainability of smallholder farmers’ subsistence, social and economic livelihoods in semi-arid and arid environments of Southern Africa. However, production of the crop has been on the decline in the smallholder communities of semi-arid Zimbabwe. The study examines factors affecting smallholder farmers’ inclination towards producing sorghum and allocating differential land proportions towards the crop. The paper uses a double hurdle estimation approach with cross-sectional survey data from 380 small holder sorghum farmers in the Mid Zambezi region. Frequency of contact with relatives, duration of receiving subsidies and the number of groups to which household members belonged had a robust influence (p<0.01) on the adoption decision. Market frequency, availability of storage facilities and the number of buyers in the market significantly (p<0.01) influenced the land allocation decision. Variables influencing the two decisions are not necessarily the same showing independence in the decisions. However, information flow from networks and conditions of market platforms remain important variables in the two decisions. It is important to decentralise sorghum markets, strengthen local networks of kinships and increase the scope of inclusive and responsive formal extension delivery systems. Storage facilities can also be developed in partnership with private players to allow for sales during market windows which generates higher returns for the small holder sorghum farmers
