The Central Park Five and Filmmaker Sarah Burns
No full textIn 1989, five black and Latino teenagers were wrongly convicted for the rape of a white woman in Central Park. The Central Park Jogger Case, as it came to be known, was chronicled in a recent documentary titled The Central Park Five by Ken Burns, David McMahon, and Sarah Burns, who take the perspective of the five men whose lives were torn apart by the trials, wrongful convictions, and fights for justice.FIT welcomes three members of the Central Park Five and filmmaker Sarah Burns to campus to present a 30-minute excerpt of the documentary, The Central Park Five, and to discuss it and current racial issues, as their case continues to resonate today.This event is presented by Professor Bernard L. Dillard, in collaboration with the Presidential Scholars Program and the Office of Educational Opportunity Programs. It is sponsored by the President’s Diversity Grant and the UCE of FIT

No full textThe Museum at FIT presented Exhibiting Fashion, its twenty-first academic symposium on Friday, March 8, 2019. This symposium explored the history of fashion curating, the different ways fashion is displayed in museum settings, and how national and regional identities influence fashion exhibitions. The symposium was organized in conjunction with Exhibitionism: 50 Years of The Museum at FIT, which commemorated the rich history of the museum, the site of more than 200 exhibitions since the 1970s.Elizabeth Way is an assistant curator of costume at MFIT. She co-curated the exhibitions Global Fashion Capitals and Black Fashion Designers and curated the current exhibition Fabric In Fashion.Joy L. Bivins is the chief curator of the International African American Museum in Charleston, South Carolina. As director of curatorial affairs at the Chicago History Museum, she collaborated on projects such as Teen Chicago and Inspiring Beauty: Fifty Years of Ebony Fashion Fair
