Old Series: Volume 6, Number 1 (February 1997)
This issue continues a conversation about martyrdom in/and the Talmud that began at the PostModern Jewish Philosophy Network Talmud Institute in Princeton in August, 1995. Liz Shanks’ article and the responses to it in Volume 5.1 started the on-line conversation. I published an article (“Towards an Erotics of Martyrdom”) in Textual Reasoning 5.2, hoping that it would widen the circle of discussants further. With the essays in this issue that hope is realized. There are three different groups of responses in this issue. The first group are those who are responding directly to the article and the sugya, and the questions raised by my reading of the sugya. The respondents in this group are Michael Carasik, Denise Kimber Buell and Charlotte Fonrobert. In the second group of respondents Peter Ochs reflects on the specific type of “Textual Reasoning” in my article and situates it within the spectrum of Textual Reasonings. Kris Lindbeck reflects on some of the issues of interpretation of the sugya within the context of the broader issues that the sugya raises. The final respondent, Michael Zank, raises the question of the sexualization of our discourse–reflecting back on the article and the responses. I am personally grateful to all the respondents for their insightful and stimulating comments. As Mike Carasik says in his response: “The mark of a good reading, to my mind, is that it does not merely explain a text, but suggests further creative interaction with it….” The same is true for a good response, and I am sure that you will agree that these essays will generate much further creative interaction
Learning-Based Ubiquitous Sensing For Solving Real-World Problems
Recently, as the Internet of Things (IoT) technology has become smaller and cheaper, ubiquitous sensing ability within these devices has become increasingly accessible. Learning methods have also become more complex in the field of computer science ac- cordingly. However, there remains a gap between these learning approaches and many problems in other disciplinary fields. In this dissertation, I investigate four different learning-based studies via ubiquitous sensing for solving real-world problems, such as in IoT security, athletics, and healthcare. First, I designed an online intrusion detection system for IoT devices via power auditing. To realize the real-time system, I created a lightweight power auditing device. With this device, I developed a distributed Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for online inference. I demonstrated that the distributed system design is secure, lightweight, accurate, real-time, and scalable. Furthermore, I characterized potential Information-stealer attacks via power auditing. To defend against this potential exfiltration attack, a prototype system was built on top of the botnet detection system. In a testbed environment, I defined and deployed an IoT Information-stealer attack. Then, I designed a detection classifier. Altogether, the proposed system is able to identify malicious behavior on endpoint IoT devices via power auditing. Next, I enhanced athletic performance via ubiquitous sensing and machine learning techniques. I first designed a metric called LAX-Score to quantify a collegiate lacrosse team’s athletic performance. To derive this metric, I utilized feature selection and weighted regression. Then, the proposed metric was statistically validated on over 700 games from the last three seasons of NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse. I also exam- ined the biometric sensing dataset obtained from a collegiate team’s athletes over the course of a season. I then identified the practice features that are most correlated with high-performance games. Experimental results indicate that LAX-Score provides insight into athletic performance quality beyond wins and losses. Finally, I studied the data of patients with Parkinson’s Disease. I secured the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensing data of 30 patients while they conducted pre-defined activities. Using this dataset, I measured tremor events during drawing activities for more convenient tremor screening. Our preliminary analysis demonstrates that IMU sensing data can identify potential tremor events in daily drawing or writing activities. For future work, deep learning-based techniques will be used to extract features of the tremor in real-time. Overall, I designed and applied learning-based methods across different fields to solve real-world problems. Translator’s Introduction to ‘Notebook from the Trip to Visit the Hopi Indians’ by André Breton*
This Translator’s Introduction provides additional context for Breton’s “Notebook from the Trip to Visit the Hopi Indians,” based on scholarship published since the 1999 publication of the “Notebook” in the edition of Breton’s Complete Works edited by Etienne-Alain Hubert. In the twenty-five years since that initial publication, new studies on Hopi history and culture have been published by Native scholars such as Lomayumtewa C. Ishii and by non-Native scholars such as Thomas Sheridan and Wesley Bernardini, who have worked closely with the Hopi. This additional scholarship extends the background already provided by Hubert in his Introduction from 1999.Modern Languages & Literature

Seasons Of Change: A Discourse Analysis Of University Rhetorical Response During A Generational Pandemic
Institutions of higher education are no strangers to crisis situations. From world wars to campus violence, colleges and universities across the United States have been both directly and indirectly affected by these crisis situations. However, in the early part of 2020, higher education was faced with a situation that transcended anything colleges and universities had seen before—COVID-19. What made COVID-19 so unique was how the disease quickly permeated throughout the United States. Thus, a stage was set for institutions of higher education to defend their campuses and communities from a most historical pandemic. This study, understanding the historical significance of the COVID-19 pandemic, researched how two public universities in Virginia, William & Mary and the University of the Virginia, used email communication to inform the students, faculty, and staff of their respective institutions during the pandemic. A discourse analysis was conducted and found that both institutions framed their discourse using a science and data-driven approach coupled with a unity-based structural frame that advanced the rhetoric and narrative of their COVID-19 response.EducationDoctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.

Because educators must prepare their students for end-of-course exams based on the SOL, classroom discussion and deeper understanding of topics can be lessened. Middle school students show declines in motivations and attitudes toward science, and challenges are greater for English-learning (EL) students. Incorporating storytelling into science classrooms can be helpful to EL and non-EL students because it presents challenging topics and vocabulary in a simpler and more engaging way than traditional textbooks. “Because He Is Gay”: How Race, Gender, and Sexuality Shape Perceptions of Judicial Fairness
How does a judge’s identity affect perceptions of their ability to preside fairly? We theorize that identity categories operate as ideological cues and that the public views judges perceived as ideologically proximate to be fairer, more impartial, and more inspiring of trust in courts broadly. Using a conjoint survey experiment with a diverse national sample, we find support for this theory and show that race, gender, and especially sexuality are used as ideological cues. The effect of identities is conditioned by respondent partisanship. Democratic respondents trust judges with marginalized identities more than judges with dominant identities. Republicans are relatively indifferent to judges’ race or gender but are significantly less trusting of gay judges. We also uncover limited effects when judges preside over a case in which their identity is salient. These results suggest that the public does not seek descriptive representation as such but uses identity categories to achieve ideological congruence.Governmen
A Reevaluation Of Why Crypto-Detectors Fail: A Systematic Revaluation Of Cryptographic Misuse Detection Techniques
The correct use of cryptography is central to ensuring data security in modern software systems. Hence, several academic and commercial static analysis tools have been developed for detecting and mitigating crypto-API misuse. While developers are optimistically adopting these crypto-API misuse detectors (or crypto-detectors) in their software development cycles, this momentum must be accompanied by a rigorous understanding of their effectiveness at finding crypto-API misuse in practice. The original paper presents the MASC framework, which enables a systematic and data-driven evaluation of crypto-detectors using mutation testing. MASC was grounded in a comprehensive view of the problem space by developing a data-driven taxonomy of existing crypto-API misuse, containing 105 misuse cases organized among nine semantic clusters. 12 generalizable usage based mutation operators were developed and three mutation scopes that can expressively instantiate thousands of compilable variants of the misuse cases for thoroughly evaluating crypto-detectors. Using MASC, nine major crypto-detectors were evaluated and 19 unique, undocumented flaws that severely impact the ability of crypto-detectors to discover misuses in practice were found. For my thesis, I built upon this previous research and greatly expanded the MASC framework. MASC was expanded in all areas by adding new functionality, new operators, new misuses, and expanding the taxonomy. In addition, I reevaluated the most up-to-date versions of the original 9 crypto-detectors and evaluated 5 additional crypto-detectors. On top of this I also doubled the amount of applications I used to evaluate the tools. To analyze crypto-detectors I looked at both the 9 crypto-detectors evaluated in the original work and 5 new crypto-detectors. For the original crypto-detectors, I evaluated them with the updated MASC against their most up-to-date versions to determine if old flaws that have previously been fixed have a tendency to reappear. Both old and new crypto-detectors were evaluated with mutated Android and Java applications that were used in the original MASC paper, 15 newly mutated Android and Java applications, and minimal examples of cryptographic misuse.Computer ScienceMaster of Science (M.Sc.
