    Children’s Ability to Use Word-Learning to Help Differentiate Pre-Obstruent Vowel Length

    While the main indicator for a voiced obstruent is internal voicing, there are several other cues that differ between voiced obstruents and their voiceless counterparts. These subphonemic cues do not inherently change meaning of a word like internal voicing but aid in differentiation. One of such cues for voicing of obstruents is lengthening of the preceding vowel. Previously, 3- 5-year-old children have shown the ability to differentiate English words with images based only on pre-obstruent vowel length. However, during efforts to investigate a possible difference in ability in the pre-obstruent versus a neutral condition, they have not shown accuracy when the words are not known and not associated with different images. In order to observe a possible difference in the neutral condition, the current experiment reintroduces image association to emphasize vowel length as phonemic. Due to vowel length's subphonemic properties in English, it seems possible that children (like adults) have increased sensitivity in the pre-obstruent condition. However, if this differentiated sensitivity exists, it will need to be investigated through other measures to attempt to increase sensitivity in children as image-association at least in this context was ineffective at raising accuracy above chance.     Development of Data Science Tools for Photovoltaic Design and Super-Resolution Imaging

    Despite the large-scale adoption of data science in neighboring fields and plethora of opportunities available, chemistry has been relatively slow to incorporate it in research. To expand the intersection of chemistry and data science, computational algorithms are developed to improve photovoltaic design and designing a novel method of multicolor, nanoscale optical imaging. Dye-sensitized photocatalysis is a promising solar technology to meet the ever-growing energy needs. Yet, its efficiency is hindered by a lack of understanding about the distribution of kinetics underlying electron transfer. By removing the effects of ensemble averaging and molecular aggregation, the first part of this thesis untangles the factors that govern the dispersive electron transfer kinetics of eosin-sensitized TiO2. Doing so required the development of a change point detection (CPD) algorithm and a high-throughput Monte Carlo simulation screening program. Combined, these elucidated the kinetic model and rates associated with electron transfer at the Eosin Y-TiO2 interface and laid the groundwork for analyzing other emitters in a statistically robust manner. Taking advantage of CPD, the second part of this thesis showcases several proof-of-concept studies in developing Blinking-Based Multiplexing, a novel technique for differentiating between spectrally overlapped emitters. By implementing a machine learning algorithm to classify emitters by their emission patterns over time, this research created a rapid, accurate, and readily generalizable method for multicolor super-resolution imaging. After surveying a variety of machine learning algorithms, logistic regression appeared best for differentiating between two spectrally overlapped emitters, routinely achieving 95% accuracy across different experimental conditions.ChemistryBachelors of Science (BS

    Justice And Change: An Exploratory Case Study Of The Early Implementation Of The Restorative Justice Whole-School Model And Reculturing In A High School In The American South

    Discipline inequities across racial, gender, and socioeconomic barriers are a constant in the United States, persisting long after the desegregation of schools in the last century. School divisions and schools across the United States have implemented restorative justice as an alternative to traditional punitive discipline as a potential remedy for discipline inequities. To institute whole-school restorative justice, a change in school culture, or reculturing, must occur, per Fullan’s culture of change and coherence models. Using Fullan’s models, this research was a practice-oriented exploratory case study. The following sources of data were collected: interviews with administrators, an at-will survey sent to all teachers, and a content analysis of the student handbook. Data from all the sources supported the finding that the case school is in the early stages of becoming a culture of change and of the reculturing process. Themes important to the implementation of this initiative included: relationships, disrupting the school-to-prison pipeline, preventing harm, building moral purpose and relationships one-on-one, building moral purpose and relationships through group settings, the importance of (positive) leadership traits, instructional collaboration, and lack of collaboration around restorative justice practices. Continuity of leadership proved an important factor in culture change. There is room for improvement and progress in all areas studied. Recommendations in the areas of school/division policy, planning, and leadership to improve implementation and continue the process of reculturing are included.EducationDoctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.
