    The Catch Up

    No full text
The Catch Up is a six episode limited series that follows Millie, a smart and dogmatic 18 year old starting her first year at a fictional liberal arts college. Coming into college, Millie feels as if she hasn't had any of the traditional coming of age experiences. The series follows Millie's desperate pursuit to make up for lost time and catch up to her peers. In her determination to check things off of a coming-of-age checklist, Millie enters an impassioned but toxic relationship with her elusive roommate, August. The Catch Up depicts the messiness, sometimes the drama, and largely the confusion that can come with being a queer woman first learning to navigate friendships and relationships. The series takes place over Millie's first semester at college, each episode spanning one month of Millie’s freshman year. The first episode is entitled August, the second episode is entitled September, and so on. The Catch Up’s intention is to display an unconventional coming of age story in hopes of challenging what coming of age really means in the first place.EnglishBachelors of Arts (BA

Challenging The Pedagogy Of Poverty With Free-Choice Learning: A Multiple Case Study

    No full text
Children in under-resourced schools are often subjected to a pedagogy of poverty, in which their school days consist primarily of independently completing worksheets and preparing for assessments. By contrast, children in more affluent schools often experience engaging, hands-on learning opportunities. This discrepancy is identified as an opportunity gap in which some students are given chances to develop both academic and non-cognitive skills, such as critical thinking, collaboration, and perseverance, while others are not. This opportunity gap could potentially be narrowed by implementing free-choice/choice-based learning experiences. The focus of this study was to examine the implementation of choice-based learning in selected under-resourced schools. I sought to learn about the decision-making processes of educators and their implementation of choice-based learning. I conducted a multiple case study in which 20 classroom teachers and school/district leaders from six schools shared their experiences and perceptions with me via interviews, written responses, and artifacts. Grade levels from kindergarten through 12th, in urban, rural, and suburban communities from the U.S. West Coast to the Mid-Atlantic region were included. Participants reported several reasons for implementing student choice, including their own K-12 experiences and the support of school/district leadership. They also cited student outcomes, such as the development of non-cognitive skills, as reasons for continuing to implement student choice in multiple ways. Unbeknownst to the participants, the implementation of choice in these schools aligned with guidelines from a pedagogy of plenty and Universal Design for Learning (UDL). A discussion of these results is presented, as well as recommendations for school leaders, teacher educators, and educational researchers, which, if followed, could help to expand implementation of choice-based learning in under-resourced schools.EducationDoctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.

Identifying Transitions in Plasma with Topological Data Analysis of Noisy Turbulence

    No full text
Cross-field transport and heat loss in a magnetically confined plasma is determined by turbulence driven by perpendicular (to the magnetic field) pressure gradients. The heat losses from turbulence can make it difficult to maintain the energy density required to reach and maintain the conditions necessary for fusion. Self-organization of turbulence into intermediate scale so-called zonal flows can reduce the radial heat losses, however identifying when the transition occurs and any precursors to the transition is still a challenge. Topological Data Analysis (TDA) is a mathematical method which is used to extract topological features from point cloud and digital data to develop a methodology to identify the transition from turbulent dominant to zonal flow dominant behavior. When expanding this approach to experimental observations, certain topological methods are susceptible to noise, which can appear as small scale topological features and crowd out legitimate topology. We explore techniques to mitigate the effects of noise in the use of TDA on plasma data, and to demonstrate methodology that is able to identify transitions despite a high noise-to-signal ratio. In this thesis, we will focus on developing mathematical models to test the efficacy of different smoothing algorithms on reestablishing topological structure lost in modeled noisy data, as well as show that it is possible capture the transition to self-organized flows in the presence of a high noise-to-signal ratio without first using processing to approximate the pre-noise image. Finally, we apply the methodology to experimental image data to capture turbulence transitions.PhysicsBachelors of Science (BS

En cherchant l'éternel: représentations des femmes bretonnes dans l'école d'art de Pont-Aven

    No full text
This thesis strives to examine how the French artists of the Pont-Aven Art School used images of women in it’s paintings to reinforce the vision of Brittany, France as a place of the past. I will begin by discussing the role of women in Pont-Aven in the late XIXcentury, that of inn-owners and female artists, before moving into discourse on the relationship between women and religion in the paintings, then women and their clothing. I develop a contrast between the works of female artists against that of the male artists creating the Pont-Aven Art School, mostly in their portrayals of time and women in Brittany, France. Then, I argue that the connections made between women and religion, as well as the portrayal of women’s clothing, work to craft a fantasy of Brittany, France, that the artists hold and export to a Parisian public. Essentially, the Pont-Aven Art School was able to visually demonstrate their idea of Brittany as an eternal landscape, one without a specific place in time and as an escape from the modernity of Paris, through the use of female subjects in their artworks.Modern Languages and LiteraturesBachelors of Arts (BA

When Everyone Is Blamed, Are All Responsible? Defining the Legal Relationship Between North American Interfraternity Conference Fraternities/National Panhellenic Conference Sororities and Universities in Harassment Cases

    No full text
A complex legal relationship exists between North American Interfraternity Conference fraternities/National Panhellenic Conference sororities and higher education institutions. This legal relationship has been defined for issues such as association rights and hazing, yet little research exists about this relationship in harassment cases. My review of scholarship and case law revealed that control and level of claim specificity are needed to define the relationship in instances of harassment. By understanding this legal relationship, both North American Interfraternity Conference fraternities/National Panhellenic Conference sororities and universities can continue to address harassment in higher education

Geodatabase: Poquoson_ShlInventory_NatBuffers_MarshCorridors_2024 Feature classes. Poquoson_BankHeightSlope_2024 - a polyline feature class containing bank height category and slope for segments of the upland shoreline. Poquoson_RecreationalStructures_2024 - a polygon feature class with locations of docks, community docks, dilapidated docks, private and public boat ramps, jetties, marinas ( 50 slips), and wharves. Poquoson_ErosionControlStructures_2024_Line (Shoreline Protection Structures & Living Shoreline Treatments) - a line feature class delineating hardened shoreline structures that are used for erosion control (i.e., revetment, sill, bulkhead, breakwaters, groins, unconventional, oyster structures, and dilapidated bulkhead), as well as living shoreline treatments (breakwater with beach nourishment, marsh with sill, marsh with oyster structures [oyster bags, manufactured, natural materials), constructed oyster reef and coir logs). Poquoson_ErosionControlStructures_2024_Polygon (Shoreline Protection Structures & Living Shoreline Treatments) - a polygon feature class delineating hardened shoreline structures that are used for erosion control (i.e., revetment, sill, bulkhead, breakwaters, groins, unconventional, oyster structures, and dilapidated bulkhead), as well as living shoreline treatments (breakwater with beach nourishment, marsh with sill, marsh with oyster structures [oyster bags, manufactured, natural materials), constructed oyster reef and coir logs). Poquoson_BeachesAndDunes_2024 - a polygon feature class that delineates the location of beaches and dunes. Poquoson_TMI_2024 - a polygon feature class that shows the location, size, and community type of tidal marshes. In 2023, the tidal marsh inventory update began in conjunction with the shoreline inventory update. Marsh boundaries (updated marsh extent and distribution) were identified and mapped remotely using high- resolution color imagery from the Virginia Base Map Program (VBMP). Plant community types and other historical data from the previous inventory were maintained for marshes that intersected the same geographic location. New marshes were initially classified as having an "undetermined" plant community type. This classification was only updated if high-resolution aerial imagery or drone-based photography provided conclusive evidence of the specific plant communities present. Poquoson_MarshMigrationCorridors_2ft_2024 & Poquoson_MarshMigrationCorridors_4ft_2024- Polygons that show the potential area of the current upland expected to become marsh under 2ft and 4ft sea level rise scenario. This layer is the result of combining the outputs from four existing marsh migration models into marsh migration corridor envelopes. The metadata file is embedded in the geodatabase and defines attribute accuracy, data development, and any use restrictions that pertain to data. Racializing Modernity in Language/Education: Mainstream Conceptions and Queer Alternatives in Taiwan

    No full text
This thesis focuses on the ways in which modernity, race and queerness (re)(dis)articulate with language in Taiwan, specifically in the context of English language education. I am interested in the imaginations that are created, and the ways that these imaginations both order and are ordered by power of multiple scales. In the city, this is manifest in popular conceptions of both Taiwanese and foreign (white) English teachers, the mainstream system and its flaws, and the materiality of the English section on the national college entrance exam. At my internship, this became manifest in our frameworks for alternatives, everyday methodologies and projects of education, and the ways that both were promoted and legitimated.AnthropologyBachelors of Arts (BA

Philosophy of 'As If': Contemporary Applications and Defense

    No full text
This thesis applies Hans Vaihinger’s Philosophy of ‘As If’, published originally in 1924, onto contemporary philosophical debate. Section 1 develops Vaihinger’s axiom of the evolutionary mind and his conception of logic and fiction. Section 2 further examines Vaihinger’s system of fictions and its metaphysical and epistemological implications. Sections 3-5 apply Vaihinger’s Philosophy of ‘As If’ towards the contemporary debate surrounding ethics. In sections 3-5 I point towards the presence, and use, of fictions within contemporary accounts of God, causation, free will, the self, and morality. Finally, in section 6 I raise potential objections to Vaihinger’s view and attempt to defend it.PhilosophyBachelors of Arts (BA

Unraveling The Relationships Between Ptsd And Alcohol Use Among College Students: A Multi-Method Examination

    No full text
The present studies examined the relationships between PTSD, autobiographical memory, attitudes toward self (ATS), alcohol quantity, and negative alcohol consequences. Prior research has indicated that attitudes ATS may not only be linked to the development of PTSD symptoms (Brewin et al., 2000) but also increased use (Annis, 1982) and alcohol consequences. Regarding autobiographical memory, research has indicated that autobiographical memories may lead to increased alcohol use as well (Jaffe et al., 2019). In Study 1 participants were college students (N = 4,635, 87.8% female) recruited from Psychology Department participant pools (SONA) at six universities across five U.S. states and the District of Columbia to participate in an online survey on substance use behaviors lasting approximately one hour. Results for Study 1 indicated that high standards (a component of ATS) uniquely significantly mediated the association between PTSD and alcohol quantity, such that higher PTSD symptoms were associated with higher standards, which in turn was associated with less alcohol quantity. Regarding negative alcohol consequences, our results found that overgeneralization (a component of ATS) uniquely mediated the relationship between PTSD and alcohol consequences, such the greater endorsement of PTSD symptoms was associated with more overgeneralization, which in turn was associated more negative alcohol related consequences. Within our moderation model focused on autobiographical memory, autobiographical memory nor its interaction with PTSD were significantly associated with alcohol consequences or quantity. In Study 2, we sought to further examine the associations between PTSD, autobiographical memory, and ATS by utilizing a mindfulness induction amongst a localized sample of participants to decrease alcohol craving. We found no significant experimental effects on ATS and autobiographical memory components. However, there was a significant interaction observed in subjective alcohol craving, such that individuals randomized to the mindfulness condition reported greater reduced craving for alcohol compared to those in the control condition. This significant finding was held even when accounting for probable PTSD. Conclusions. Study 1 revealed that ATS, specifically high standards and overgeneralization are important to consider when examining factors that mediate the relationship between individuals with PTSD and alcohol quantity and consequences. Study 2 revealed that the mindfulness induction decreases subjective alcohol craving among those randomized to the mindfulness condition. Taken together, further exploration of additional variables and measurement techniques are needed to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the interplay between these associations. Nonetheless, our findings offer insight into novel ways in which researchers/clinicians can enhance the effectiveness of interventions and improve outcomes for college students who may be struggling with substance use and PTSD.PsychologyMaster of Science (M.Sc.
