    Magnesium and its alloys have emerged as promising materials for biomedical applications due to their light weight, mechanical compatibility with bone, biodegradability, and excellent biocompatibility. However, their rapid degradation in physiological environments remains a critical challenge. To address this, a range of surface-modification techniques have been explored to tailor the surface properties while preserving the bulk characteristics of magnesium. This paper provides an overview of surface-engineering methods aimed at enhancing the corrosion resistance, mechanical performance and bioactivity of magnesium. Three key surface-modification approaches are presented: plasma treatment, laser texturing and sandblasting. Plasma treatment resulted in the formation of a stable, protective oxide layer with significantly improved corrosion resistance and hydrophilicity. Laser texturing generated hierarchical microstructures yielding superhydrophobic surfaces with an enhanced hardness, though slightly reduced corrosion resistance. Sandblasting led to an increased surface roughness and mechanical stiffness, but also introduced microstructural defects that are detrimental to the corrosion stability. Overall, the study demonstrates how tailored surface modifications can effectively balance the mechanical integrity and degradation behavior of magnesium, paving the way for its optimized use in biomedical applications

    Industrial symbiosis networks supporting circularity

    The aim of this study is to provide a more nuanced understanding of the industrial symbiosis networks supporting the circular economy. We do so through an evolutionary dynamics lens, viewing these networks as adaptive complex systems. This approach allows us to address the limited research attention that has resulted in insufficient understanding of the underlying net works in the circular economy literature, particularly regarding collaboration for waste resource exchange. i.e. the circular economy closing of the resource loops. This paper draws on empirically obtained data from industrial symbiosis networks in five countries: Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, Denmark and Finland. Through network analysis, we find that the structure of these symbiosis networks has evolved to varying extents. This evolution takes into account the complexity of leveraging opportunities based on waste resource exchange, cyclicality with numerous feedback loops, and resilience against disruptions and failures. Based on these findings, we propose three types of symbiosis networks that support circularity: mature, evolving, and emerging. Concur rently, we further develop conceptual and empirical diagnostic tools for future research by showcasing the utility of newly developed measures. Additionally, we outline several practical implications for both system-level, and organization-level managers

    An Ex Ante approach to the resilience and recovery plan’s impacts on sustainable tourism in Algarve and Alentejo

    The European Union has been trying to adjust its tourism policy in response to the challenges posed by the recent COVID-19 pandemic. The funding of the EU Cohesion Policy has been one of the primary mechanisms guaranteeing that all regions can be prepared to receive tourists and cope with the sustainability challenges the pandemic has raised. The recovery and resilience plan (PRR) is the most recent instrument created to help economic growth in most European Union countries. The implementation of the PRR in Algarve and Alentejo has been fundamental to understanding the Portuguese tourism sector, as these regions are heavily dependent on tourism sector revenue and were hit hard by the consecutive lockdowns in recent years. Therefore, this policy, in brief, critically assesses the tourism-related projects that received funding from the PRR until November 2023 (ex ante) and their potential to guarantee long-term tourism sustainability in Algarve and Alentejo. Despite not achieving the expected efficiency results due to delays in project execution and low investment, the PRR is still a positive upgrade for tourism-related policy in Algarve and Alentejo

    The freshwater sounds archive

    Freshwater ecosystems are full of underwater sounds produced by amphibians, aquatic arthropods, reptiles, plants, fishes, and methane bubbles escaping from the sediment. Although much headway has been made in recent years investigating the overall soundscapes of various freshwater ecosystems around the world, there remains a significant knowledge gap in our collective inability to accurately and reliably link recorded sounds with the species that produced them. Here, we present The Freshwater Sounds Archive, a new global initiative, which seeks to address this knowledge gap by collating species-specific freshwater sound recordings into a publicly available database. By means of metadata collection, we also present a snapshot of the species studied, the recording equipment, and recording parameters used by freshwater ecoacousticians globally. In total, 61 entries were submitted to the archive between the 4th of March 2023 and the 30th of April 2025, representing 16 countries and 6 continents. The most numerous taxonomic group was arthropods (29 entries), followed by fishes (14 entries), amphibians (10 entries), macrophytes (7 entries), and a freshwater mollusk (1 entry). The majority of the submissions were from European countries (27 entries), of which the United Kingdom was the most represented with 14 entries. The next most represented region was North America (11 entries), followed by South America (8 entries), Oceania and Asia (5 entries each), Africa (3 entries), and the Middle East and Central America with 1 entry each. The global south, polar regions, and areas with an elevation >500 m (asl) were underrepresented. The field of freshwater ecoacoustics to date has largely focused on the analysis of ‘sound types’ due to a current lack of knowledge of species-specific sounds. The Freshwater Sounds Archive presents an opportunity to move beyond the ‘sound type’ approach, and towards an approach with higher taxonomic resolution, ultimately resulting in species-specific descriptions. Furthermore, The Freshwater Sounds Archive will provide freshwater ecoacousticians with one of the main tools required to start creating annotated training datasets for machine learning models from soundscape recordings by referring to known species sounds present in the archive. In the long-term, this will result in the automatic detection and classification of species-specific freshwater sounds from soundscape recordings, such as indicator, invasive, and endangered species

    The impact of different types of self-regulation scaffolds on learning science with hypermedia

    Effective use of scaffolds in hypermedia should support students\u27 self-regulated learning while considering their individual differences. Metacognitive and cognitive scaffolds, but not motivational scaffolds, have been extensively researched. There is no clear evidence that using only one type of scaffold is more effective than combining different types. The aim of this study was to determine if the use of different types of scaffolds and their combination in hypermedia predicts learning achievement over and above individual student differences. In the first phase of our quasi-experimental study, 443 ninth graders learned about visual perception in hypermedia. We measured their individual characteristics (grade point average [GPA], intelligence [IQ], learning time, and the number of learning strategies used) and their learning achievement and divided them into six comparable groups. In the second phase, the groups learned about olfactory perception using different scaffolds embedded in hypermedia: 6 cognitive, 6 metacognitive, 6 motivational, all 18 scaffolds together, a selected subset of 6 mixed scaffolds, and no scaffolds. We administered a pre-test and a post-test to assess what students learned, and collected data on students’ note-taking, self-reported use of learning strategies, and interest in the topic. Hierarchical regression analysis of data from 288 students revealed that students with a higher GPA, specific prior knowledge and interest in the topic, and those who used more self-regulation strategies learned more. Scaffolds did not significantly contribute to the prediction of learning outcomes. Implications for the research design of studies investigating the effects of learning scaffolds in hypermedia are discussed
