Cortico-muscular phase connectivity during an isometric knee extension task in people with early Parkinson’s disease

    — Introduction: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is characterized by enhanced beta-band activity (13–30 Hz) in the motor control regions. Simultaneously, corticomuscular (CM) connectivity in the beta-band during isometric contractions tends to decline with age, in various diseases, and under dual-task conditions. Objective: This study aimed to characterize electroencephalograph (EEG) and electromyograph (EMG) power spectra during a motor task, assess CM phase connectivity, and explore how these measures are modulated by an additional cognitive task. Specifically, we focused on the beta-band to explore the relationship between heightened beta amplitude and reduced beta CM connectivity. Methodology: Early-stage people with PD and age-matched controls performed an isometric knee extension task, a cognitive task, and a combined dual task, while EEG (128ch) and EMG (2x32ch) were recorded. CM phase connectivity was assessed through phase coherence and a phase dynamics model. Results: The EEG power spectrum revealed no cohort differences in the beta-band. EMG also showed no differences up to 80 Hz. However, the combined EEG-EMG analysis uncovered reduced beta phase coherence in people with early PD during the motor task. CM phase coherence exhibited distinct scalp topography and frequency ranges compared to the EEG power spectrum, suggesting different mechanisms for pathological beta increase and CM connectivity. Additionally, phase dynamics modelling indicated stronger directional coupling from the cortex to the active muscle and less prominent phase coupling across people with PD. Despite high inter-individual variability, these metrics may prove useful for personalized assessments, particularly in people with heightened CM connectivity

    Alkali-activated mineral residues in construction

This research aimed to investigate the potential of using alkali activation technology to valorize steel slag and bauxite residue for the production of high-performance pavement blocks. By utilizing these industrial by-products, the study seeks to reduce their environmental impact and support the development of sustainable construction materials. Lab-scale testing showed that bauxite pavers showed a decrease in mechanical strength with increasing replacement of ordinary Portland cement. Partial replacement up to 20% still exceeded 30 MPa in compressive strength. Steel slag-based pavers achieved the 30 MPa threshold required for the application with selected mix designs. Pilot-scale production-optimized formulations and standards testing, including freeze–thaw resistance, confirmed the technical viability of these products. Life cycle analysis indicated a 25–27% reduction in CO2 emissions for slag-based tiles compared to traditional concrete tiles. Moreover, using industrial residue reduced mineral resource depletion. This study examined the properties of the resulting alkali-activated binders, their ecological benefits, and their performance compared to conventional materials. Through a comprehensive analysis of these applications, our research promotes the circular economy and the advancement of sustainable construction products

In this paper, we address the role of linguistic diversity in oral performance across the educational vertical. As a possibility for the successful implementation of cross-curricular integration through systematic and contextualised teaching of effective speaking, we present the Framework for Vertical Teaching of Oral Performance, as a basis for a holistic approach to the planning and implementation of pedagogical activities aimed at developing students\u27 communicative competence. In the first part, we define oral performance as a multidimensional component of classical rhetoric and show the necessity of incorporating a rhetorical perspective into the conception of public speaking in education. Complementing classical rhetoric with the concept of oracy, we add a translanguaging approach to establish the link between teaching of spoken language, rhetoric as a process-based formation of a speaker, and the idiolects in the school. Finally, we present the Framework and outline main points that serve as a basis for developing pedagogical practices. The significance of a rhetorical pedagogy, which incorporates the role of institutional recognition of the individual\u27s idiolect, is that it evokes the values of humanistic education, thus going beyond the narrow developing of linguistic skills and therefore constituting a vital part of the education’s general aims and goals.V prispevku obravnavamo vlogo jezikovne raznolikosti v govornem nastopu kot splošno razširjeni dejavnosti učnega procesa v celotni izobraževalni vertikali, ki hkrati velja tudi za enega pogostejših elementov medpredmetnega povezovanja.
