    Correlation of oxidative stress biomarkers with activity of pediatric idiopathic nephrotic syndrome

    Background/Objectives: This study investigated the correlation of oxidative stress biomarkers with the activity of idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS) in Slovenian children. Methods: In this prospective study, sequential plasma and urine samples from 20 children with INS in different phases of disease activity were taken: at first disease presentation or relapse (before glucocorticoid (GC) treatment), at time of remission achievement, and after discontinuation of GC treatment. This study measured oxidative stress biomarkers, such as 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), hexanoyl-lysine (HEL) adduct, dityrosine (DiY), and 15-isoprostane F2t, using competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and assessed oxidative status using the FRAS 5 analytical system, which enables rapid photometric measurement of both oxidative and antioxidant capacity from biological fluids. Two complementary tests were performed: the d-ROMs test (derivatives of reactive oxygen metabolites) and the PAT (plasma antioxidant test). The oxidative stress index (OSI) was calculated as the ratio between them. Results: Concentrations of isoprostanes in urine were statistically significantly lower in patients at first disease presentation or relapse compared to time of remission achievement. Values of PAT test in serum were significantly highest after GC treatment. Values of d-ROMs test in serum were significantly lower at time of remission achievement compared to first disease presentation or relapse. Values of 8-OHdG, HEL, DiY (in plasma and urine), isoprostanes, and OSI in plasma did not statistically significantly differ in various phases of disease activity. Conclusions: Isoprostanes in urine and PAT in serum could serve as potential biomarkers of oxidative stress and disease activity in children with INS

    The effect of serotonin reuptake and serotonin-noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors on motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease

    Background: Depression often co-occurs with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and is effectively treated with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) and serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SNRI), but their effect on motor symptoms has not yet been conclusively demonstrated. Objective: To assess the impact of the SSRI/SNRI on the motor symptoms of PD. Methods: We used data from the Parkinson’s Progression Markers Initiative database, in a matched subject design with a target group (N =47) which had been taking SSRI/SNRI medication and a control group (N =90) which had not. Matching criteria included Movement Disorders Society Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale part III (MDS-UPDRS-III) total score and its subscales’ scores, and levodopa equivalent daily dose (LEDD) at the time of the first examination (initial LEDD). For the target group, we compared the MDS-UPDRS-III score before and after taking the SSRI/SNRI medication, while for the control group we compared two equally spaced examinations. Results: In the target group, we found a greater worsening of motor scores, which was associated with lower values of initial LEDD. In addition, apathy was an independent predictor of motor worsening. Conclusions: SSRI/SNRI-use seems to be characterized by a steeper worsening of motor symptoms, which can be predicted by a lower initial LEDD. Further research should continue to investigate the effect of SSRI/SNRI-use on motor symptoms in PD

    Načrtovanje komunikacijske strategije za obstoječi in nove presejalne programe za raka v Sloveniji

    Slovenija se sooča z načrtovanimi spremembami v obstoječem Državnem programu zgodnjega odkrivanja predrakavih sprememb materničnega vratu (ZORA) ter s pripravo novih organiziranih presejalnih programov za raka prostate (PETER) in pljučnega raka (LUKA). Uvajanje sprememb na področju presejalnih programov za raka predstavlja kompleksen javnozdravstveni izziv, ki zahteva premišljeno komunikacijsko podporo. Brez ustrezno zasnovane komunikacijske strategije obstaja tveganje neustreznega razumevanja sprememb, nizke udeležbe ciljnih populacij ter pomanjkanja podpore med zdravstvenimi delavci in drugimi deležniki. Namen prispevka je osvetliti ključne korake pri načrtovanju komunikacijske strategije, kot so situacijska analiza in analiza deležnikov, opredelitev strateških ciljev, identifikacija ciljnih skupin in segmentacija populacije oz. občinstva, oblikovanje glavnih sporočil in stališč, identifikacija ključnih komunikacijskih kanalov in strateških pristopov, načrtovanje implementacije strategije, evalvacija in merjenje učinkovitosti strategije. Prispevek obravnava, kako lahko raziskave in empirični podatki služijo kot temelj za oblikovanje ciljno usmerjenih strategij, ki bodo učin- kovito podprle spremembe v omenjenih presejalnih programih. Projekt Cancer screening awareness in Slovenia – Communication strategy, ki ga financira Mednarodna agencija za raziskovanje raka, bo s kvalitativnimi in kvantitativnimi raziskavami zagotovil vpoglede v zaznave in stališča ciljnih populacij in zdravstvenih strokovnjakov. Na tej osnovi bodo oblikovana priporočila za komunikacijske strategije, prilagojene posameznim presejalnim programom, kar bo lahko prispevalo k njihovi večji legitimnosti, sprejetosti in dolgoročni trajnosti
