Liquid-copper infiltration and characterization of additively manufactured W-lattice structures

    No full text
Tungsten-copper (W-Cu) composites have a wide range of engineering applications, from arc-resistant electrodes and high-voltage electrical contacts to heat sinks for integrated circuits and plasma-facing components for fusion reactors. They combine high corrosion and erosion resistance, very good thermal and electrical conductivity, low thermal expansion, with good mechanical properties. However, the fabrication of such materials is limited in terms of shape complexity and the internal distribution of the individual phases. Furthermore, the dissimilar thermo-mechanical properties (melting temperature, thermal conductivity, coefficient of thermal expansion) of the constituent phases impose severe constraints on the fabrication and use of W-Cu composites. To overcome the challenges of component design and enable greater freedom in terms of composition, W-Cu composites were produced by a combination of additive manufacturing and liquid-melt infiltration (LMI). Porous W-lattice structures were manufactured by laser powder-bed fusion (LPBF) followed by infiltration with molten Cu. A series of composites was produced with Cu contents from 3 to 75 vol% and evaluated in terms of thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties. The LPBF-LMI W-Cu composites exhibited comparable thermo-mechanical properties to W-Cu materials manufactured using powder-metallurgical processing, but with an expanded composition range and shape complexity. Lower thermal expansion coefficients (4.5–5.8 × 10−6 K−1) and an improved thermal stability of the Young’s modulus, only a 27–33 GPa decline in the range 27–827 °C, were observed for all the compositions, which was ascribed to the W-phase connectivity in all the W-Cu composites, independent of the volume fraction of Cu

General position problems in strong and lexicographic products of graphs

Outer, dual, and total general position sets are studied on strong and lexicographic products of graphs. Sharp lower and upper bounds are proved for the outer and the dual general position number of strong products and several exact values are obtained. For the lexicographic product, the outer general position number is determined in all the cases, and the dual general position number is established in many cases. The total general position number is determined for both products. Along the way some results on outer general position sets are also derived

An unusual cause of fatal pulmonary embolism

Adrenal tumours invading the inferior vena cava (IVC) are rare but can cause life-threatening complications such as pulmonary embolism. Early recognition, rapid diagnosis, and prompt imaging—including point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS), echocardiography, and advanced modalities like CT and PET-CT—are essential for optimal management. We present a patient with pulmonary adenocarcinoma and secondary adrenal tumour that extended into IVC and caused fatal tumour thrombus pulmonary embolism

Rest in chronic low back pain – the gap between practice and guidelines

Chronic non-specific low back pain is common, and represents a public health and econo-mic challenge. The current guidelines recommend maintaining activity, limiting prolonged bed rest, and appropriately adapting work participation. Misconceptions about rest can influence physiothe-rapists’ recommendations and patient recovery. In a cross-sectional study, 104 physiotherapists from primary care in Slovenia completed the HC-PAIRS, Back-PAQ, and clinical case questions (activity, work, rest) via an online questionnaire. The highest adherence to guidelines was observed for physical activity (54%), while recommendations regarding work (non-adherent in 89%) and rest (non-adherent in 64%) were largely inconsistent with the current guidelines. Most physiotherapists still recommended restrictions on bed rest, despite evidence of the harm-ful effects of prolonged rest. The results highlight the need for improved professional education to promote an active approach and guideline adherence, which may enhance patient outcomes

    Epidemiology of venous thromboembolism

Venous thromboembolism (VTE), encompassing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), is a common disorder with annual incident rates of 150 (95% confidence interval (CI) 131–169) / 100 000 (VTE), 90 (95% CI 72–109) / 100 000 (DVT) and 67 (95% CI 54–80) / 100 000 (PE), respectively in Western countries. Of note, reported VTE incidences are approximately 7-fold lower in East Asia. VTE incidence increases with age and is comparable between sexes, although men exhibit a higher risk of recurrence. Incidence rates of PE, but not of DVT, have been increasing in the last decades, reflecting changes in diagnostic workup and risk factors. VTE has a significant impact on mortality, and it is estimated that death from PE, which includes sudden death from undiagnosed, untreated PE may be responsible for approximately 3–4 of all deaths. But also diagnosed, treated VTE still carries a substantial risk with case fatality rates up to 10% in contemporary cohorts. Even when conservative calculations are applied, VTE deaths equal approximately 26 (95% CI 19–32) / 100 000 and rank—at least in Europe and North America—at the 3rd place for cardiovascular diseases and at the 5th place for death from all causes. In this article, we summarize the current state of knowledge and recent data on the epidemiology of VTE with a particular focus on mortality from PE and clinical implications

Residential satisfaction with general characteristics of socialist and post-socialist housing estates in Croatia and Slovenia

This study compares housing quality and residential satisfactionbetween socialist (old) and post-socialist (new) large housingestates (LHEs) in Croatia and Slovenia. A survey conducted in 2022included a total sample of 2,193 participants. Residential satisfac-tion was assessed based on general characteristics of the estate, including construction density, safety, green spaces, children’s play-grounds, transport connections with other parts of the city, andtraffic density. In general, residents were satisfied with their builtenvironment in housing estates, irrespective of country or estatetype. However, residents in both types of housing estates inSlovenia reported generally higher levels of satisfaction thanthose in Croatia. Additionally, despite their age, socialist-era LHEswere not rated worse overall than post-socialist housing estates. The basic urban principles of contemporary cities — sustainability, safety, inclusivity, greenness, and resilience — are more closelyaligned with the design and planning practices of old LHEs thanwith the market-oriented urbanism of the post-socialist period. As aresult, new housing estates in the two countries, particularly inCroatia, contribute less to everyday placemaking at the neighbour-hood level. However, this can be improved by aligning futuredevelopment more closely with contemporary urban principles

Dimensionality and reliability of the epworth sleepiness scale in dental patients referred for oral appliance therapy

Background: There is a limited amount of published research on the dimensionality and reliability of the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) questionnaire for adult patients referred for oral appliance therapy. This information is crucial for dentists, who often lack objective measures of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) during titration process of an oral appliance. This study investigated the dimensionality and reliability of ESS scores in adult dental patients with SDB undergoing oral appliance treatment. Methods: In 103 dental patients with SDB referred by a physician (mean age: 52.3 ± 13.0 years35% female), the dimensionality of the ESS was investigated using exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) to determine how many scores are needed to characterize the construct. ESS questionnaires were administered twice before treatment. Internal consistency and test-retest reliability were assessed. Results: Horn\u27s parallel analysis suggested a one-factor model. Extracting one factor and standardizing loadings led to strong loadings for all items, ranging from 0.53 to 0.82. The fit indices indicated a good model fit (Comparative Fit Index = 0.999, Root Mean Square Error of Approximation = 0.020, and Standardized Root Mean Square Residual = 0.064). Cronbach\u27s alpha with 95% confidence interval (CI) was 0.85 (0.82-0.88), indicating strong internal consistency. The intraclass correlation coefficient type 2,1 (95% CI) was 0.86 (0.79-0.90), and the weighted kappa ranged from 0.50 to 0.81. Conclusions: In this patient population, the ESS reliably characterizes excessive daytime sleepiness with a single score and appears suitable for individual assessment in dental patients undergoing oral appliance treatment for SDB
