The stein has a garland with the sign, 4F, in the top, and the text "14 Bayersiches Turnfest Wurzburg" in the middle. Made of pottery, stoneware, ceramic, pewter, and glass, the steins and memorabilia depict sporting activities such as gymnastics, running, lifting, and other track-and-field events. Begun by Friedrich Ludwig Jahn in 1811 in Berlin, these social clubs were designed to promote physical fitness and foster a sense of national pride. Members of these clubs also competed in festivals (Turnfests), commemorated through many of the steins in this collection , including from Turnfests held in Frankfurt, Leipzig, Münich, and Nüremberg. The historical period represented by the items in this collection ranges from the mid-nineteenth century through 1942, with the bulk of the materials dating between 1880 and 1934

No full textThis is the finding aid for of MS527 - William H. Ball Alumni Class Representative Papers in the Springfield College Archives and Special Collections. The materials in the William H. Ball Class Representative Papers include reports, correspondence, a photograph, and various alumni documents. The materials center around Mr. Ball’s activities as a Springfield College alumni class representative for the Class of 1891, of which he was a member, between 1935 to 1942. Most of the collection is made up of correspondence from members of the Class of 1891 and 1892 and alumni representatives. Of greatest importance are 2 letters from Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of Basketball, and 4 letters from Amos Alonzo Stagg, the “Grand Old Man of Football.” They were both classmates of Mr. Ball. From left to right the students are Benjamin Morales, Dina Pitsas, Amanda Crane, and David Zaldivar. They are dressed up and holding hands in front of the senior walk tile on the ground. The Richard B. Flynn campus union is in the background. This seems to be the seniors from NSO.These four students graduated in 2017 and were all part of leadership roles on the Springfield College campus. They worked closely with President Cooper and help share the ideas of other students on campus.This photograph is part of a group of photographs and files used in the poster on the Senior Walk for the 2019 President's Gala. Most photographs are low-res JPGs sent in by alumni that was taken or that the school photographer took of students and faculty on the Senior Walk during the last twenty years. There was also a PNG file of the poster that was ultimately created and uploaded as a JPG. These digital files have not been printed individually. Most field are represented on the poster, a copy of which is held in the Oversized collection in the Springfield College Archives
George Williams wax cylinder on NEDCC "IRENE" (2016)
No full textThe George Williams wax cylinder, the only known recording of George Williams, being digitized in September of 2016. The cylinder is on a tube that is part of a audio preservation technology known as "IRENE". IRENE uses a non-contact approach to Audio Preservation, creating ultra-high resolution images of the audio groove structures.
