9/9 for Title IX: The History of Women's Basketball (Sept. 9, 2022)
This is the video of the 9/9 for Title IX: The History of Women's Basketball day-long event held at Springfield College on September 9, 2022. The event was part of Kathy Magano's Distinguished Professor Humanics project to educate and advocate for Title IX. The video is around three hours and thirty minutes long and consists of three panels. The first panel is with author Andrew Maraniss on his book "Inaugural Ballers" on the first US Women's Olympic Basketball Team in 1976. Two of the original players, Ann Meyers Drysdale and Juliene Brazinski Simpson, joined him on the panel. The second panel is with author Madeleine Blais on her book called "In These Girls, Hope is a Muscle" about the 1992-93 Amherst (Mass.) Regional Girls Basketball team. Included on the panel was Ron Moyer, the coach of the team, and two former players (Kristen Keller and Rita Powell). The third panel involved two WNBA players, Tamika Catchings and Tina Thompson and Springfield College Women's Basketball Head Coach, Naomi Graves. All panels were moderated by Marty Dobrow, author and Springfield College professor. The final event of the day was Maura Healey, the soon to be Massachusetts Governor, interviewed by Springfield College President Mary-Beth Cooper.Humanics is a word that has a special meaning in the history and philosophy of Springfield College, as well as in the college’s motto of “Spirit, Mind, and Body.” The Oxford English Dictionary defines Humanics as, “the subject or study of human affairs or relations, especially of the human element of a problem or situation as opposed to the mechanical.” In 1962, Dr. Glenn Olds, President of Springfield College at the time, began to wonder why this name was given to the intended philosophy of the college by Dr. Laurence Locke Doggett, Springfield College’s first full-time president. Olds acknowledged that the practices of the faculty were in large part consistent with the Humanics philosophy, but he believed that a more self-conscious application would improve chances of its continuity and survival. To ensure this, a Distinguished Professor of Humanics position was created at the college, first filled by Dr. Seth Arsenian from 1966-1969. The purpose of this position was to catalyze a renewal of consciousness in the philosophy. This was done by annually mandating the Distinguished Professor of Humanics to give a Humanics lecture on the definition of Humanics and what the concept means to them. Arsenian started this tradition in 1967 with his speech titled, “The Meaning of Humanics,” in which he described the concept as a set of ideas, values, and goals that make our college distinct from other colleges and make commitment and unity toward commonly sought goals possible

This is the URL for the finding of MS 525 - Dr. Jesse Parks Papers. The Jesse Parks papers contain biographical information, photographs, news releases, news articles, correspondence, research notes and data, informational pamphlets, forms, small tools, a dictionary, and maps. Materials date from 1958 to 1984 and focus on his work on Operations Crossroads Africa and his Doctoral Dissertation and Research. Materials represented include information on Operation Crossroads Africa, including photographs, letters, reports and evaluations, news articles, correspondence, an Arabic dictionary, and maps of Egypt and the former United Arab Republic (U.A.R.). There is an abundance of information and materials from Dr. Parks’ dissertation “An Electromyographic and Mechanical Analysis of Selected Abdominal Exercises”, including photographs, research data, notes and sketches, small tools, informational pamphlets on equipment used, and a master copy of his final dissertation. The papers include information on the 1971 National Summer Youth Sports Program, containing a visitation report and evaluation. There are miscellaneous photographs of Dr. Parks, and his wife, Lucille, including an Orthopaedics Department photograph from his time at the University of Michigan, along with various news releases and articles about Dr. Parks, ranging from his first years working at Springfield College and involvement in the city of Springfield community, to his obituary. This is the video of the Title IX: Power of 37 Words event that took place at Richard B. Flynn Campus Union on the campus of Springfield College on October 1, 2022. Springfield College Graduate Commencement Program (May 14, 15, and 16 2021)
A program for the one hundred and thirty-fourth and the one hundred and thirty-fifth graduate commencement ceremonies for the class of 2021 of Springfield College held on May 14, 15, and 16 2021. This pamphlet starts with a description of the commencement exercises, including songs, prayers, commencement address, conferring of degrees, the Honorary Degree candidates, to then finish with a list of the members of the graduating class. Due to COVID-19 the ceremonies were broken up among a number of different days with the commencement address held virtually on the 14th Schedules for each day and each ceremony is given. Charles D.
