Essays on financial fragility, instability and the macroeconomy
Get PDFThe aim of this thesis is to shed some new theoretical and empirical light on the issues of financial fragility and instability of the macroeconomic systems. The thesis consists of four independent essays. The first essay develops a macrodynamic model in which firms’ and banks’ desired margins of safety play a central role in macroeconomic performance. Mathematical analysis and numerical simulations illustrate that the endogeneity of the desired margins of safety during the investment cycles is conducive to instability. Moreover, it is indicated that fiscal policy can reduce the destabilising forces in the macroeconomic system. The second essay explores, via a stock-flow consistent model, the macroeconomic channels through which securitisation and wage stagnation can jointly affect financial fragility. The results from simulation experiments provide support to the view that the combination of risky financial practices and higher inequality can substantially increase the likelihood of financial instability in the macro system. The third essay proposes a new bank liquidity ratio that explicitly considers the time-varying nature of liquidity by assigning weights on banks’ balance sheet items that depend on financial risks and perceptions. This ratio is estimated and assessed for the EMU-12 countries. Furthermore, the essay investigates the link between macroeconomic fragility and bank liquidity for the EMU. The empirical results suggest that banks in the EMU do not self-impose higher liquidity requirements when macroeconomic fragility increases. The fourth essay puts forward a liquidity index that extends Minsky’s well-known financial taxonomy of economic units to the government sector. The index is estimated for Greece over the period 2001-2009. The data analysis supports the view that the financial fragility of the Greek government sector increased significantly before the sovereign debt crisis

Get PDFThis thesis introduces unsupervised image analysis algorithms for the segmentation of several types of images, with an emphasis on proteomics and medical images. Τhe presented algorithms are tailored upon the principles of deformable models and more specific region-based active contours. Two different objectives are pursued. The first is the core issue of unsupervised parameterization in image segmentation, whereas the second is the formulation of a complete model for the segmentation of proteomics images, which is the first to exploit the appealing attributes of active contours.
The first major contribution of this thesis is a novel framework for the automated parameterization of region-based active contours. The presented framework aims to endow segmentation results with objectivity and robustness as well as to set domain users free from the cumbersome and time-consuming process of empirical adjustment. It is applicable on various medical imaging modalities and remains insensitive on alterations in the settings of the acquisition devices. The experimental results demonstrate that the presented framework maintains a segmentation quality which is comparable to the one obtained with empirical parameterization.
The second major contribution of this thesis is an unsupervised active contour-based model for the segmentation of proteomics images. The presented model copes with crucial issues in 2D-GE image analysis including streaks, artifacts, faint and overlapping spots. In addition, it provides an alternate to the laborious, error-prone process of manual editing, which is required in state-of-the-art 2D-GE image analysis software packages. The experimental results demonstrate that the presented model outperforms 2D-GE image analysis software packages in terms of detection and segmentation quantity metrics

Get PDFΤο νέο Πρόγραμμα Σπουδών προωθεί μια παιδαγωγικά ευαίσθητη, με ρεαλιστικούς μαθησιακούς στόχους, διδακτικά ευέλικτη και πολυεπίπεδη πρόταση θρησκευτικής αγωγής, η οποία βασίζεται στο ισχύον νομικό πλαίσιο και ανταποκρίνεται στις σύγχρονες κοινωνικές ανάγκες. Έχει ως επίκεντρο την Ορθόδοξη παράδοση αλλά διαφοροποιείται από την κατήχηση, διασώζει εύλογες και αναγκαίες ισορροπίες ανάμεσα στο οικείο και στο έτερο χωρίς να μετατρέπει το μάθημα σε Θρησκειολογία. Το νέο ΠΣ, μαζί με όσες καινοτομίες κομίζει, αξιοποιεί καλές πρακτικές και διδακτικές εμπειρίες από το παρελθόν, λαμβάνει υπόψη τα θετικά στοιχεία από τις υφιστάμενες δομές, χρησιμοποιεί όλα τα υπάρχοντα διδακτικά μέσα και υλικά, ουσιαστικά αποτελεί περαιτέρω θετική ανάπτυξη των περιεχομένων των ΔΕΠΠΣ-ΑΠΣ, με μεθοδικότερο και συστηματικότερο τρόπο

No full textΗ Τοπική Ιστορία στο Γυμνάσιο εντάσσεται στη Ζώνη Βιωματικών Δραστηριοτήτων ως ένα πεδίο μελέτης και έρευνας. Στο νέο Πρόγραμμα Σπουδών η Τοπική Ιστορία συνδέεται με τα περιεχόμενα του μαθήματος της Ιστορίας όλων σχεδόν των τάξεων της Υποχρεωτικής Εκπαίδευσης, αφού αναδεικνύεται η ιστορικότητα του τοπίου και η οργανική σχέση του με τον άνθρωπο. Η Τοπική Ιστορία βοηθά το μαθητή να αντιμετωπίζει ερευνητικά το περιβάλλον διατυπώνοντας έλλογες υποθέσεις εργασίας, να παρατηρεί, να περιγράφει, να συγκρίνει και να εξηγεί τους λόγους για τους οποίους τα πράγματα πήραν την παρούσα μορφή τους στο συγκεκριμένο χώρο, να ενεργοποιείται δημιουργικά στις προσπάθειες διατήρησης της πολιτισμικής φυσιογνωμίας του τόπου του, να καλλιεργεί κίνητρα για ατομική και συλλογική δράση μέσα και έξω από το σχολείο, να αναπτύσσει ερευνητικές δεξιότητες (άντληση πληροφοριών-επαλήθευση δεδομένων). Επιπλέον, η Τοπική Ιστορία συμβάλλει στο άνοιγμα του σχολείου στην τοπική κοινωνία, ενώ συνδέεται με την Περιβαλλοντική και Διαπολιτισμική Εκπαίδευση
