Deliverable 2.2.1: Online Dictionary Learning from Big Data Using Accelerated Stochastic Approximation Algorithms

    Get PDF
Applications involving large-scale dictionary learning tasks motivate well online optimization algorithms for generally non-convex and non-smooth problems. In this big data context, the present paper develops an online learning framework by jointly leveraging the stochastic approximation paradigm with first-order acceleration schemes. The generally non-convex objective evaluated online at the resultant iterates enjoys quadratic rate of convergence. The generality of the novel approach is demonstrated in two online learning applications: (i) Online linear regression using the total least-squares approach; and, (ii) a semi-supervised dictionary learning approach to network-wide link load tracking and imputation of real data with missing entries. In both cases, numerical tests highlight the potential of the proposed online framework for big data network analytics

Comparative genomic analysis among three dairy Streptococcus macedonicusstrains

Streptococcus macedonicus and Streptococcus infantarius, two species within the Streptococcus bovis/ Streptococcus equinus complex (SBSEC) are frequently found in spontaneously fermented foods especially of dairy origin. These two species have been suggested to be non-pathogenic and to have been adapted to the dairy environment similarly to Streptococcus thermophilus. Analysis of the first complete genomes of S. macedonicus and S. infantarius indicated that they may be indeed adapted to milk but they also have retained a restricted repertoire of virulence traits when compared to well characterized pathogenic streptococci. In this study we performed comparative genomic analysis among S. macedonicus strains, isolated from Italian, French and Greek dairy products. The contigs of the Italian and French partial genomes were aligned using as a reference the Greek S. macedonicus ACA-DC 198 genome, the only S. macedonicus genome that is completely sequenced to date. Based on these assemblies, we constructed two distinct pseudochromosomes for the French and the Italian strains. Despite the artifactual nature of the two chromosomes, pairwise alignments among the three genomes revealed a high degree of synteny. The genetic information was overall conserved, but strain specific regions also existed. Furthermore, the analysis revealed that the French S. macedonicus strain has lost genes involved in the catabolism of complex plant carbohydrates, in the adhesion to the host’s cells and in haemolysis. On the other hand, an extra lactose operon and a proteolytic system characteristic of lactic acid bacteria were identified, indicating their evolutionary adaptation to the milk environment. Analogous observations could also be made for the Italian strain. Even though our findings further support the adaptation of the S. macedonicus species to milk fermentation, the analysis of the additional S. macedonicus genomes, including non-dairy isolates, may be necessary to clarify its pathogenic potentia

Engaging students with intellectual disabilities through location based games based learning

    Get PDF
Learning, is both an emotional and cognitive process and according to researchers and teachers worldwirde, when players are engaged in activities that are intrinsically motivating, they are more prone to demonstrate deep learning. Since 1981 when Malone used digital games as a medium in order to analyze intrinsic motivation, digital games have been reported to stimulate the students’ interest, while motivating them to deploy control, curiosity and imagination. Studies within our research grouping have shown that Digital Games Based Learning (DGBL) can have a positive effect on some of the core development needs of people with Intellectual disabilities and associated sensory impairments. One current are of interests is the expansion of DGBL activities on mobile platforms. The RECALL Project describes the development and evaluation of a novel route learning system for people with disabilities using locative based services (on the Android OS) and is the output of a EU award (504970-LLP-1-2009-1-UK-KA3-KA3MP). In the following paper we will present piloting findings from the piloting use of RouteMate application as well as an initial proposal of a playful locative DGBL integration in the educational experience of users with intellectual disabilities

Re(I) tricarbonyl complex of 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione: DNA binding, cytotoxicity, antiinflammatory and anti-coagulant effects towards platelet activating factor

    Get PDF
The complex fac-[Re(CO)3(phendione)Cl] (1) (where phendione = 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione) has been synthesized and fully characterized by UV–visible, FTIR, and NMR techniques. The DNA binding properties of 1 are investigated by UV-spectrophotometric (melting curves), covalent binding assay, CV (cyclic voltammetry), circular dichroism (CD) and viscosity measurements. Experimental data indicate that 1 fits into the major groove without disrupting the helical structure of the B-DNA in contrast to the free phendione which intercalates within the base pairs of DNA. Upon irradiation, complex 1promotes the cleavage of plasmid pBR322 DNA from supercoiled form I to nicked form II via a proton coupled electron transfer mechanism. This comes as a result of experimental data in anaerobic/aerobic conditions and in the presence of DMSO. The biological activities of 1 and its precursors [Re(CO)5Cl] and phendione are tested towards a series of cancerous cell lines as glioblastoma (T98G), prostate cancer (PC3) and breast cancer (MCF-7) as well as platelet activating factor (PAF)-aggregation. Moreover, all the aforementioned compounds are tested for their ability to modulate PAF-basic metabolic enzyme activities in preparations of rabbit leukolytes. The in vitro experiments indicate that phendione has a better antitumor effect than cisplatin whereas [Re(CO)5Cl] is a better PAF inhibitor than both the phendione ligand and 1. Moreover, for the first time it is indicated that [Re(CO)5Cl], with a IC50 of 17 nM is comparable to the widely used PAF receptor antagonists, BN52021 and WEB2170 with IC50 of 30 and 20 nM, respectively, whereas 1 affects PAF-catabolism
