Targeted gene expression study of Salmonella enterica during biofilm formation on rocket leaves
In the present study, the ability of Salmonella Typhimurium to form biofilm community on rocket leaves and rocket extract at 10 C and 20 C was investigated. This goal was achieved with the study of expression of genes associated with biofilm formation and other functional roles. The obtained results showed that Salmonella growth was inhibited when cultured in rocket extract (liquid and solid state) and when grew directly to rocket leaves. The observed inhibition might be attributed to nutrient starvation to the specific growth media because of plant leaves's variability, cell physiology and antimicrobial compounds of rocket. In addition, gene expression study using Real-Time PCR showed that biofilm was formatted on solid media, while the entrance and adhesion of the microorganism within the plant held more strongly through the stomata of the plant leaves. Furthermore, genes associated with managing stress situations were overexpressed at 20 C. From these results, it is indicated that further studies are needed to better determine the survival and/or growth of the pathogen as “real” biofilm cells on plants. In addition, the study on development and gene expression of biofilm cells is necessary in order to eliminate the specific pathogen and reduce the food-borne diseases it causes

A new late Miocene (Tortonian) flora from Gavdos Island in southernmost Greece evaluated in the context of vegetation and climate in the Eastern Mediterranean
A new late Miocene (Tortonian) leaf flora has recently been recovered in the southernmost part of Europe on the island of Gavdos, Greece. So far, three conifers (Tetraclinis salicornioides, Taxodium dubium and Pinus sp.) and 27 fossil species/morphotypes of angiosperms have been recognized. Among them, some represent subtropical, partly evergreen woody elements (e.g. Daphnogene sp., Laurophyllum sp., Myrica lignitum), some others (e.g., ?Sassafras, Fagus gussonii, Ulmus, Acer angustilobum, Populus populina, Ailanthus pythii, Paliurus tiliifolius, several legumes) belong to deciduous shrubs or trees. The number of the determined angiosperms is sufficient for using statistical techniques to estimate palaeoclimate (LMA, CLAMP, CA) and to reconstruct the palaeovegetation (phytosociological approach, IPR-vegetation analysis). The Gavdos flora is based on leaf impressions and allows correlations with other Greek floras of almost the same age, namely from Crete – Vrysses (latest Tortonian to Messinian, ca. 7.5-6.0 Ma), Makrilia (late Tortonian, ca. 8.6-7.7 Ma) and Pitsidia, Messara Basin (early Tortonian, ca. 10.5 Ma), while that from Vegora, Macedonia (Messinian, ca. 7-6 Ma) may document further trends in the late Miocene

Identification of transformation products (TPs) of emerging pollutants is challenging, due to the vast number of compounds, mostly unknown, the complexity of the matrices and their often low concentrations, requiring highly selective, highly sensitive techniques.Wecompile background information on biotic and abiotic formation of TPs and analytical developments over the past five years. Identification of unknowns in real wastewater through the application of a LC-QTOF-MS based workflow
Wastewater contains a high number of organic micropollutants and transformation products of environmental concern. Recent approaches, combining methodologies based on target and suspect screening (for suspected substances based on prior information but with no reference standard) are important for the comprehensive characterization of environmental samples. Nevertheless, samples still contain many chromatographic peaks which do not correspond to substances included in target and suspect screening lists. These substances may be potentially relevant (e.g. due to their concentration or potential effects) and thus the identification of selected non-targets is important. However, full identification of unknown compounds is often difficult and there is no guarantee of a successful outcome. The aim of this work is to show some specific examples on the identification of unknown compounds in real wastewater (collected from the WWTP of Athens).
