    Το μάθημα ολοκληρώνεται σε τρεις ενότητες. Στην πρώτη ενότητα περιγράφονται η χρησιμότητα και η χρήση των απτικών εικόνων και των γραφικών αφής. Δίνονται παραδείγματα χρήσης απτικών εικόνων και προσδιορίζονται τα πεδία εφαρμογής της παραγωγής απτικών εικόνων και γραφικών. Επιπλέον, παρουσιάζονται οι απτικές μεταβλητές, που χρησιμοποιούνται για την παραγωγή χαρτών αφής και τα διαφορετικά είδη χαρτών αφής, ενώ δίνονται ταυτόχρονα πολλαπλά παραδείγματα χαρτών αφής. Στη δεύτερη ενότητα περιγράφονται αναλυτικά δύο βασικοί μέθοδοι παραγωγής απτικών εικόνων και χαρτών αφής, η στερεοαντιγραφική και η θερμομορφική μέθοδος. Στη συγκεκριμένη ενότητα οι εκπαιδευόμενοι διδάσκονται στην πράξη όλη τη μεθοδολογία παραγωγής απτικού υλικού σε χαρτί με μικροκάψουλες και έρχονται σε επαφή με πλήθος απτικών υλικών που παράχθηκαν με διαφορετικές μεθόδους, χειροποίητες και αυτοματοποιημένες. Στην τρίτη ενότητα παρουσιάζεται η φιλοσοφία παραγωγής και χρήσης απτικο-ακουστικού υλικού για άτομα με τύφλωση. Οι εκπαιδευόμενοι έρχονται σε επαφή με απτικο-ακουστικό υλικό και διδάσκονται τις δυνατότητες εφαρμογής χρήσης αυτού του υλικού εναλλακτικά του τυποποιημένου απτικού ή ακουστικού υλικού που χρησιμοποιείται σήμερα στην εκπαίδευση των ατόμων με τύφλωση

    Properties and characterization of biodiesel from selected microalgea stains

    The demand for alternative fuels has increased in the past several years[1]. Biofuels are gaining importance as significant substitutes for the depleting fossil fuels. The fact that biofuels are renewable fuels with very low emissions of CO2 in the lifecycle offers them a competitive advantage[2]. However, the first produced biodiesel derived from edible oil seed crops (first generation feedstocks), lurking a serious risk of disturbing the overall worldwide balance of food reserves and safety. The second generation feedstocks for biodiesel production obtained from non-edible oil seed crops, waste cooking oil, animal fats, etc., but these feedstocks are not sufficient to cover the present energy needs. Recent focus is on microalgae as the third generation feedstock[3]. Mi l d t t f l d b t th i lt ( ) b kih(l ) df h Microalgae do not compete for land, but they can grow in salty sea), brackish (lagoons) and fresh (lakes) water. Moreover, microalgae have high photosynthetic efficiency using solar energy, water and carbon dioxide to produce higher quantities of biomass than other feedstocks. In the present research work, two indigenous fresh water (ChlorF1, ChlorF2) and two marine (ChlorM1, ChlorM2) Chlorophyte strains have been cultivated successfully under laboratory conditions using commercial fertilizer (Nutrileaf 30-10-10, initial concentration=70 g/m3) as nutrient source. The produced biodiesel from the microalgae biomass achieved a range of 2.2 - 10.6% total lipid content and an unsaturated FAME content between 48 mol% and 59 mol%. The iodine value, the cetane number, the cold filter plugging point (CFPP) and the oxidative stability of the ultimate biodiesels were determined, based on the compositions of the four (4) microalgae strains and compared with the specifications in the EU and US standards, EN 14214 and ASTM D6751 respectively

    Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is currently being widely used within the construction sector as the most accurate and effective methodology to quantify the environmental impact associated with construction projects. Taking into account project stages such as raw material acquisition, construction, operation and the handling of the materials at the demolition stage, it constitutes a valuable tool to optimize the sustainability of technical structures. The purpose of the current research is to investigate the last stage of a project considered in LCA analysis, namely the end scenario. A steel-framed residential building is used as the basis for the definition of a set of alternative end scenarios which cover the complete range of handling options for the construction materials retrieved after the service life of the building. These scenarios are used to complement a corresponding set of alternative life cycles, for which environmental impact assessment calculations are executed. The results are used to draw conclusions regarding the influence of end scenarios and material handling at the end of a construction project on the minimization of its environmental impact and the subsequent optimization of its sustainability

    Acquisition through Horizontal Gene Transfer of Plasmid pSMA198 by Streptococcus macedonicus ACA-DC 198 Points towards the Dairy Origin of the Species

    Background: Streptococcus macedonicus is an intriguing streptococcal species whose most frequent source of isolation is fermented foods similarly to Streptococcus thermophilus. However, S. macedonicus is closely related to commensal opportunistic pathogens of the Streptococcus bovis/Streptococcus equinus complex. Methodology/Principal Findings: We analyzed the pSMA198 plasmid isolated from the dairy strain Streptococcus macedonicus ACA-DC 198 in order to provide novel clues about the main ecological niche of this bacterium. pSMA198 belongs to the narrow host range pCI305/pWV02 family found primarily in lactococci and to the best of our knowledge it is the first such plasmid to be reported in streptococci. Comparative analysis of the pSMA198 sequence revealed a high degree of similarity with plasmids isolated from Lactococcus lactis strains deriving from milk or its products. Phylogenetic analysis of the pSMA198 Rep showed that the vast majority of closely related proteins derive from lactococcal dairy isolates. Additionally, cloning of the pSMA198 ori in L. lactis revealed a 100% stability of replication over 100 generations. Both pSMA198 and the chromosome of S. macedonicus exhibit a high percentage of potential pseudogenes, indicating that they have co-evolved under the same gene decay processes. We identified chromosomal regions in S. macedonicus that may have originated from pSMA198, also supporting a long co-existence of the two replicons. pSMA198 was also found in divergent biotypes of S. macedonicus and in strains isolated from dispersed geographic locations (e.g. Greece and Switzerland) showing that pSMA198’s acquisition is not a recent event. Conclusions/Significance: Here we propose that S. macedonicus acquired plasmid pSMA198 from L. lactis via an ancestral genetic exchange event that took place most probably in milk or dairy products. We provide important evidence that point towards the dairy origin of this species

    Στο πλαίσιο αυτού του έργου έχουν σχεδιαστεί επιμέρους εργασίες ώστε να μελετηθεί η ικανότητα σχηματισμού βιο-υμενίων από τα παθογόνα Salmonella Typhimurium και Staphylococcus aureus σε φυτικές επιφάνειες in vitro και in situ. Σε μια πρώτη προσπάθεια κατανόησης του φαινομένου, ελέγχθηκε η ικανότητα των δύο αυτών ειδών να προσκολλώνται και να δημιουργούν βιο-υμένιο σε φυτική επιφάνεια καθώς και σε εκχύλισμα φυτικού ιστού σε στερεή μορφή. Για το σκοπό αυτό χρησιμοποιήθηκαν τα στελέχη S. Typhimurium (CDC 6516-60) (ATCC 14028) και Staph. aureus COL (MRSA) σε χαμηλό πληθυσμό (περίπου ένα δεκαδικό λογάριθμο) για τον εμβολιασμό εργαστηριακού θρεπτικού υποστρώματος LB (Luria-Bertani) και εκχυλίσματος ρόκας σε υγρή ή στερεή

    Modelling biofilm formation of Salmonella enterica ser. Newport as a function of pH and water activity

    The effect of pH and water activity (aw) on the formation of biofilm by Salmonella enterica ser. Newport, previously identified as a strong biofilm producer, was assessed. Biofilm formation was evaluated in tryptone soy broth at 37 C and at different combinations of pH (3.3e7.8) and aw (0.894e0.997). In total, 540 biofilm formation tests in 108 pH and aw combinations were carried out in polystyrene microtiter plates using crystal violet staining and optical density (OD; 580 nm) measurements. Since the individual effects of pH and aw on biofilm formation had a similar pattern to that observed for microbial growth rate, cardinal parameter models (CPMs) were used to describe these effects. CPMs described successfully the effects of these two environmental parameters, with the estimated cardinal values of pHmin, pHopt, pHmax, awmin and awopt being 3.58, 6.02, 9.71, 0.894 and 0.994, respectively. The CPMs assumption of the multiplicative inhibitory effect of environmental factors was validated in the case of biofilm formation using additional independent data (i.e. 430 OD data at 86 different combinations of pH and aw). The validation results showed a good agreement (r2 ¼ 0.938) between observed and predicted OD with no systematic error. In the second part of this study, a probabilistic model predicting the pathogen's biofilm formation boundaries was developed, and the degree of agreement between predicted probabilities and observations was as high as 99.8%. Hence, the effect of environmental parameters on biofilm formation can be quantitatively expressed using mathematical models, with the latter models, in turn, providing useful information for biofilm control in food industry environments
