Geometric-phase-propagator approach to time-dependent quantum systems

    Get PDF
A field-theoretical approach to the scattering off an oscillating quantum system is developed. As a key ingredient it employs the adiabatic eigenstate basis and consists of a perturbative scheme for the calculation of the geometric phases influencing the transmission through the time-dependent potential landscape. The main advantage is the identification of basic diagrams which allow for an immediate interpretation of the underlying elementary physical processes contributing to the scattering and transmission behavior. We apply our method to the simple, but prototypical, problem of transmission through an one-dimensional oscillating δ potential and demonstrate how it enables a deeper understanding of the relevant physical processes

Temperature effects on the bulk discharge current of dielectric films of MEMS capacitive switches

    Get PDF
Kelvin probe method has been directly applied to capacitive MEMS switches in order to investigate temperature activated mechanisms in PECVD Silicon Nitride (SiNx) films. The bulk discharge current of MEMS capacitive switches has been determined for different charging and discharging temperatures, in the range of 300–400 K. The increase of discharging temperature leads to an increase of the magnitude of the bulk discharge current and the relaxation time of the discharging process is found to be thermally activated. Finally, it is shown that the increase of charging temperature assists trapping at centers characterized by time constants even longer than the time window of observation, i.e. 10^4 s

The importance of hydrogen bonding for the catalysis of the enantioselective aldol reaction by Tripeptide-Like prolinamide thioureas

    Get PDF
The majority of the organocatalysts developed up to now for asymmetric organic transformations employ more than one functionalities in the catalytic mechanism that act through either covalent or non-covalent interactions. For example, proline employs the pyrrolidine nitrogen and the carboxylic acid group, while chiral thioureas combine the thiourea functionality with a tertiary or a primary amino group. We have recently shown that an amide of proline with a diamine carrying a thiourea group is a very good catalyst for the enantioselective aldol reaction.1 Trying to improve the activity, we have found that a tripeptide-like thiourea having as building blocks (S)-proline, (1S,2S)-diphenylethylenediamine and (S)- di-tert-butyl aspartate provides the products of the reaction between ketones and aromatic aldehydes in high to quantitative yields and high stereoselectivities (up to 99:1 dr and 99% ee). A number of structural modifications of the catalyst were undertaken in order to understand the role of the hydrogen bond donors of the catalyst, i.e. the prolinamide hydrogen and the two hydrogen atoms of the thiourea group. We have come to the conclusion that the importance of the hydrogen bond donors of the catalyst follows the order: thiourea hydrogen originated from aspartate › amide hydrogen › thiourea hydrogen originated from diphenylethylenediamine

NGA Investments: A departure from the existing cost and demand structure assumptions

    Get PDF
The two most significant factors that affect the deployment of Next Generation Access (NGA) networks are the cost of the investment and the expected demand for the new fibre-based services. The related literature is based on very simplified assumptions regarding cost and demand structures. In particular, the investment cost is assumed to be increasing and convex reflecting the fact that fibre deployment becomes marginally more expensive as it is extended to rural, less populated areas. In addition, the demand for the new fibre-based services is estimated by assuming that a certain level of NGA investment leads all consumers to equally increase their willingness to pay for such services. This article contributes to the emerging research on the investment in access infrastructures. In particular, the assumptions about cost and demand structures are modified in order to capture the access networks’ underlying morphology complexity and the consumers’ socioeconomic characteristics, respectively. Firstly, an empirical analysis is conducted for the 100 major municipal departments from urban to rural in Greece. Their street network data are analyzed as the basis of the NGA installation combining GIS technology and Graph Theory techniques and hence the main cost-drivers are derived. Using regression analysis a real-data-based cost function is obtained. Secondly, a novel model that takes into account socioeconomic characteristics affecting the impact of a certain level of NGA investment on consumers’ willingness to pay is developed. The Pareto consumer distribution is used to reflect the greater (lower) positive impact of NGA investments on the willingness to pay of the consumers who live in more (less) populated areas. 2 The comparison of the existing models with the ones developed in this paper shows that: (i) the cost function used in the existing models always underestimates the investment cost of the higher populated areas and overestimates the investment cost of the lower populated areas; (ii) the demand for the new fibre-based services is higher under the proposed than the existing approach; and (iii) the level of NGA investment chosen by the investor is always much higher under the proposed than the existing approach
