Get PDFIn the last years, on average 300.000 people were killed each year in armed conflicts, 200.000 civilians died by the use of small arms in non-military situations. The constant supply of second-hand and new arms manufactured mostly by American and European producers and the easy accessibility in many regions of the world help to nurture violence and conflict situations. Producers and their supporters like the US-American NRA claim „Guns don’t kill people. People kill people” and stress that they always act within the legal framework. Nevertheless, producers are frequently trying to circumvent and undermine or campaigning for the abolishment of all kinds of regulations. Get PDFAt the beginning of the 20th century, social movements in Latin America were heavily influenced by anarchist immigrants from Europe and then by the ideological struggles around the Russian revolution. Beginning in the 1930s, many social movements started to incorporate into leftwing and populist parties and governments, such as the Cardenismo in Mexico. Facing the shift of many governments towards the left and the \u27threat\u27 of socialist Cuba, ultrarightwing groups and the military, supported by the US, responded in many countries with brutal repression and opened the neoliberal era. Today, after 30 years of repression and neoliberal hegemony, the social movements are gaining strength again in many Latin American countries. With the anti-globalization movement, new insurrections like the Zapatismo in Mexico, and some leftwing governments coming into power in Venezuela, Brasil and other countries, there appears to be a new turn in Latin America\u27s road to the future

In both cases the overincarceration is not caused by a special propensity to criminal acts of these groups, but by a certain neoliberal strategy to react with the penal system against urban poverty. In the case of the EU it is also a ritual response to processes of immigration, producing boundaries, which allow to confirm a European citizenship. The further result of this strategy is depoliticization of social and political problems as well as a certain racialization

Get PDFContrary to popular headlines of reform deadlock in Germany, substantial economic reforms have taken place in the past few years. First, we analyze the impact of these reforms on the institutional features of the Modell Deutschland. Second, we ask why the red-green government abandoned the original agenda that favored the core constituency of the coalition government and adopted the unpopular Agenda 2010. For an answer to these questions we turn to theories of hegemony for an explanation of the broader context in which the events have un folded. Within this context, we will explore the actors behavior from a Machiavellian perspective. Our main thesis is that when the left is on the defensive because of a lack of mobilization capabilities, a left-of-center coalition government will feel under pressure to veer to the middle. Contrary to popular headlines of reform deadlock in Germany, substantial economic reforms have taken place in the past few years. Transnationale Konsumgüterunternehmen in Ägypten: Eroberung des Massenmarktes zwischen „ruralem Marketing“ und „Konsumentenintifada“
Get PDFThe marketing strategies of transnational corporations operating in the field of consumer goods in contemporary Egypt are analyzed and the interrelations between rural marketing and consumer intifada are explored. The question is raised whether the homogenization scenario of local consumer cultures in the sense of a coca-colaization process is coming into shape. On the contrary to the mainstream assumption, it is stated that since the last decade corporate communication and product policies in their effort to conquer the Egyptian mass market have been increasingly taking cultural spheres of meaning into account. Die Perspektive der vernünftigen Gesellschaft
Get PDFTo realize reason was one of the objectives of enlightenment. The left was committed to this goal since Engels\u27 dictum that the German working class is the heir of philosophy. Discussing the ambivalences and pitfalls of reason the article shows that there is a strong and legitimated criticism of reason for its totalitarian and authoritarian implications. Emancipatory strategies since long are well aware of these consequences and therefore looking for new ways of conceptualising the aim of a rational shaped world. Paradoxically only by and through reason it is possible to overcome the logic of equivalence
