As an illustration Wissel analyses the WTO and the attempt to organise a Multilateral Agreement on Investment (MAI) inside, and outside the WTO. The example of the MAI shows how the different actors can use this flexibility to enforce their interests and to obtain the selectivity of this network

Get PDFThe privatization of state-owned assets and the reduction of direct state economic intervention have not led to a reduced role of the state but to changes in its form, involving new types of formalized regulation, the fragmentation of the public sphere, the decentring of the state and the emergence of multi-level governance. This has been complemented by the increased salience of ‘private’ regulation. Despite talk of deregulation there has been extensive reregulation, and the emergence of global regulatory networks, intermingling the public and the private. The transition from government to governance means a lack of a clear hierarchy of norms, a blurring of distinctions between hard and soft law, and a fragmentation of public functions entailing a resurgence of technocracy

Get PDFSenescence, obsolescence, republic of elderly people, the burden of ancients – there is a huge number of crisis-based labels, in order to describe the ageing society in times of growing life expectancy and declining birth rates. However, this is just one side of the medal: Against the backdrop of the horrific scene of a senescent, burdened society, the well-educated, increasingly healthy and young elderly are discovered as resources for the collective good. The activation of old age appears on the political agenda. Starting out from Anglo-Saxon theoretical perspectives, notably from the Foucauldian Gerontology and the Political Economy of Ageing, the author demonstrates in how far the German academic debate uncritically tends to push ahead the productivity- oriented use of the old men’s and women’s resources, instead of expounding the manifold problems of the elderly people’s empowerment, activation and commitment

No full textEmployees\u27 health is a historically continuous object of exchange processes in capitalist formations. Even after establishing high standards of safety at work and health protection in the fordist age there are ongoing bargains with the commodity of labour including the implicit selling of health. The "shifting of market boundaries" is an explanatory approach analyzing the current changes of this bartering process. Instead of describing it as a one way perspective of anonymous "marketization" we stress the perspective of internal and external actors who are not determined by structures but who are involved in bargaining processes resulting in changes of markets as a mode of social coordination. Thus practice of resistance with regards to safety at work and health protection will be understandable
