Wissen und Macht statt Ideologie und Interesse: Plausibilität und Defizite in Foucaults Marx-Kritik
The paper considers, in its first part, Foucault\u27s earlier epistemological critique of Marx ("lack of an epistemological incision", "empirico-trancendental doublet", "naive realism"). In this context, the complex of "ideology" is considered from a discourse theoretical point of view. It is argued that a clear insight into the materiality of discourses and of subjectivizations is actually lacking in Marx. Within the second part of the paper, a sort of change of direction of the criticism is suggested: It seems evident that Foucault\u27s way of reading Marx, before 1968, proves superficial and blind towards the crucial epistemological innovations which are characterized as "cyclological" and situated within a logic of reproduction, going beyond the dichotomy of the "empiricotranscentental doublet"
Die Reproduktion der Gesellschaft und die Praktiken der Freiheit
How is modern society reproducing itself? This question is handed on from Marx via Althusser to Foucault. One important theoretical mean to solve the puzzle is the concept of ideology. But ideology is misconceived if understood as mere appearance of material processes. Marx\u27 own method of grasping the order of appearances is phenomenological, i.e. he is destructive of the immediately given but contradictory order of appearances and tries to reconstruct an order at the same time intelligible and incorporating the diverse phenomena. This successive method entails the promise of a totally ordered whole of the appearances. Foucault understands the dangers of such a promise. Marxism tends to close the theoretical quest for the modes, conditions, and practices of social reproduction. Therefore Foucault propagates the anti-scientific methods of genealogy, which take real practices into account again. His objectives are revolutionary practices of freedom. To write their genealogy Foucault also wonld have been forced to encounter the reproduction of society as a whole

Alles relativ. Warum es in Deutschland keine Armut geben darf
The article throws a critical glance at the recent debate on the qnality and extent of poverty in Germany, a discussion provoked by the Government\u27s publication of the third official "Report on Poverty and Wealth"
Das Wahr-Sagen des Marxismus: Foucault und Marx
In the first instance, Foucault seemed to be very far from Marx, speaking of Marx in terms of obsolescence, although important as a historical figure. But Foucault is situating his own work in the context and the set of problems of Marx\u27 theory. Thus Foucault\u27s work may be seen as an attempt of critical self: reflection on the claims for power of truth in Marxism. At least this leads Foucault to a conceptualization of power and social contradictions that disables him to acknowledge the radical emancipatolY thrust of Marx\u27 work
Prekäre Vergemeinschaftung und verrückte Kämpfe: Repressive Integration als Herrschaftsmodus im prekären Dienstleistungsbereich
Two case studies in multinational service enterprises (fast food and transport sector) show that strategies of corporate culture are quite efficient for management control of precarious and \u27poor work\u27. The article discusses the problems of individual and collective interest representation within these special kind of employment relations, the reasons why struggles for respect and justice seem to be \u27crazy conflicts\u27 there and in which context nevertheless occur ruptures in the system of absolute management control
Bleibt das US-Finanzkapital trotz Krise hegemonial?
Up until now, the management of the financial crisis has been placed, primarily, in the hands of those who allowed the crisis to happen. Investors and financial institutions have received government support at tax payers\u27 expense while the needs and interests of other victims of the crisis have been, for the most part, neglected. The article focuses on the stages of crisis management in the USA. It assesses their distributional effects and compares them with alternative policy proposals on the basis of available studies. Its original contribution is an analysis of the political forces that have allowed the crisis managers to shift the burden of the crisis onto workers and tax payers. The research is guided by a Neo-Gramscian approach and contributes to the operationalization of the concept hegemony
Armutspolitik in den US-amerikanischen Städten
While poverty has been growing and becoming manifest in new forms of segregation in US cities, welfare reform has been accompanied by intensified efforts to enhance social control of urban space. In parallel with the shrinkage of social services and the erosion of job security, the (public, private, and third sector) provision of services have exploded - with detrimental impacts on the fabric of urban democracy and citizen participation. By looking at developments in Los Angeles, this article analyzes the implementation of a new generation of "social cohesion" policies in US cities. Community development and empowerment programs as well as welfare-to-work programs involve non profits such as community-based organizations and development corporations in the implementation of these services, who are tasked with the activation of marginalized groups and neighborhoods, and with the provision of local security. Their practice has transformed the quality of urban participation: while invoking empowerment and cohesion, it has reduced participation to minor issues and restricted access to the relevant decision-making arenas
Staatlichkeit, Gouvernementalität und Neoliberalismus
The paper examines Foucault\u27s analytics of the state based on the concept and history of governmentality. While the approach has a promising critical-analytical potential, the latter is not always realized in the works of the governmentality studies. These problems that are particularly related to the conceptualisation and analysis of Neo-Liberalism as a governmentality are examined from the perspective of Bob Jessop\u27s Neo-Marxist strategic-relational theory of the state. It is suggested to adopt some of the insights developed in this approach to realize the potential of Foucault\u27s analytlcs of state more thoroughly
Carl Schmitt Reloaded: Otto Depenheuer und der "Rechtsstaat"
Otto Depenheuer, who teaches public law in Germany, is rather influential among German conservative politicians, like for example the present minister of the interior. The article shows that the conceptual approach of the conservative catholic Depenheuer depends nearly completely on the lessons taught by Carl Schmitt, who played a crucial role in the development of the Nazi\u27s conception of law and state
