No full textIn The notion of "nature" constitutes an empty signifier, which is colonized and filled with meaning by scientists, experts and policy-makers, and through a variety of techno-administrative procedures. This is a gesture par excellence of de-politicization, of placing "nature" outside the field of public dispute, contestation, and disagreement. In order to find a democratic and socially inclusive response to the current "environmental crisis", we need to abandon the concept of "nature". Instead, we need to re-conceputalize "nature" as a socio-environmental process, and reclaim democratic public spaces, which allow us to discuss the conditions for more egalitarian socio-ecological arrangements

No full textThe global mobility of capital and the availability of tax havens enable multinational corporations and wealthy individuals to escape tax payments due in their home countries. Most states react by shifting more of the tax burden onto labour and consumption, while lowering corporate tax rates in an effort to remain internationally competitive, thereby creating a tax system that is both inequitable and socially and economically unsustainable. However, there is scant evidence that lower taxes on capital in fact contribute to higher investment, but they do lead to profit shifting for the purpose of tax planning. Alternative tax systems such as unitary taxation could help to stop profit shifting and slow down tax competition

However, the alleged immunity of subjectivities against it does not result from affirmative internalisation of ‘entrepreneurial’ interpellations, but from the mobilisation of ‘wayward’, non-market compliant practices and dispositions. Rather than as a linear, subsuming process of “subjectivation”, this is to be interpreted as the subjective dimension of capitalist accumulation by dispossession. They argue that high nominal corporate tax rates will canse a shift of taxable income to low tax countries and reduce their overall economic attractiveness. Although at least the fear of tax evasion is not without any reason in globalised markets, there is scope to increase corporate taxation left unused because a lack of political will. However, the lack of binding international tax standards and harmonisation makes it difficult to stop tax competition effectively and to allow an adequate taxation of global players in the respective countries of economic activities

Financial innovations, intended to transfer risk from the banking to the household sector, have led to an underestimation of risks accumulated in the financial sector. When the crisis broke out, risk which was thought to have been privatised returned to the financial sector, and later on to the state, Initial reform efforts presume that minor modifications of the rules governing the financial sector would allow a continuation of the current path of development, The future distribution of risk within society and the role of the financial sector in managing it are topics which have not been on the agenda in post crisis debates so far

The article asks why and how European countries are affected differently by the crisis and why responses to the crisis diverge. Based on a regulationist framework, it is argued that the existence of different regimes of accumulation and their specific linkages explain those phenomena to a large extent. It is concluded that the policy measures proposed until now by dominant social forces are limited to rather minor changes and aim at the restoration of the regimes of accumulation which had been dominant during the past decades

Get PDFThe pattern of systematic labor degradation created by the global regime of neoliberalism has brought crisis to labor movements in both the U.s. and China. As predatory capital has advanced - supported for nearly 30 years to accumulate profit in a largely unregulated environment (China) or deregulating environment (US and EU) - the formal labor movement has responded weakly. But, quite unexpectedly, it can be argued trends within Chinese society are emerging that could counter the hegemony of foot-loose capital... while, by comparison, US workers are ever more unprotected and powerless.
