Zur symbolischen Rückeroberung und Politisierung des öffentlichen Raums: Eine Analyse der Raumpolitiken des movimiento 15-M
Get PDFThe radical conquest of public space and its transformation into political spacehave introduced major alterations of the Spanish public sphere after the outbreak of the 15-Mmovement. Such modifications refer also to a topic of symbolical interest, which is the conceptionand configuration of urban space – a space that in the course of neoliberal urbanproduction has been characterized as a residual category and a place of controlled and profitorientedactivities. By analysing key practices of the protest movement, the article brings togetherdebates from critical urban geography and political theory. In a first step, it develops aconceptual perspective towards the multiple logics of neoliberal urbanism and the transformationof public space. Subsequently, counter-hegemonic spatial politics and urban demandswill be discussed through the conceptualization of protest as acts of citizenship, proclaimingthe construction of the public sphere and public space via strategic disobedience and thetransgression of rules and laws. Get PDFHow does financialisation affect the relationship between non-financial industrial capital and finance? This article argues that their relationship must not be conceived of as an external one, i.e. as the more or less close connection between institutionally separate economic sectors. Financial dominance should be seen instead as something that is internal to industrial capital. The theory and practice of shareholder value are the most prominent expression of this. Marx’ analysis of the different circuits of industrial capital (in Vol. II of Capital) helps to understand the historically variable modes of articulation between non-financial industry and finance. Furthermore it provides conceptual tools to grasp the current financial dominance within industrial capital and can thus help to understand how it differs from the finance capital described by Hilferding

Get PDFHanno Pahl: Textbook Economics: A Social Studies of Science Perspective. The paper arguesthat introductory textbooks in economics are an important object of inquiry. Althoughthe knowledge presented in this type of literature often does not cover the research frontiersof the discipline, economics textbooks are influential media of the external communicationof mainstream economics as well as agents of academic socialization on the inside. Therefore,they need to be analysed in terms of content and rhetorical strategies, a task that is notidentical with the general critique of neoclassical economics. A case study is undertaken toidentify symptomatic and problematic framings of the bodies of knowledge in three populartextbooks. The final section contextualizes the findings and poses further research questions
