Praxis und Form: Ökonomiekritik mit Marx und Bourdieu

    Get PDF
It makes sense to combine Marx and Bourdieu in order to analyze capitalism and criticize economics. Whereas Marx reveals the crucial importance of social forms and capital fetishism, Bourdieu’s theory of practice serves as theoretical antidote to rational choice theory in economics and other social sciences. Furthermore Bourdieu convincingly criticizes Marxism for its inability to overcome theoretical oppositions like idealism vs. materialism. On the other hand Bourdieu’s theory of capital contributes to the proliferation of capital concepts in social science and contains some degree of complicity with economic imperialism that can be questioned by Marxian theory

Parteilichkeit und Aufklärung: Zur Kritik der Mosaik-Linken

The paper deals with the importance of common theoretical positions for cooperation between political forces. Intended is a critique on the idea that mere shared interests are a sufficient foundation for such efforts. Discrepancies between partial interests and a wider orientation are discussed in reference to Rosa Luxemburg and Anton Pannekoek

„Wandel, Persistenz, Paradoxie“: Normalisierung und Prekarisierung von Sexualität und Geschlecht im Neoliberalismus

    Get PDF
This essay discusses current analyses that observe a paradoxical simultaneity of both the flexibilisation and the persistence of traditional forms of gender and family, focussing on the work of Andrea Maihofer, who amply investigated in this field. The author argues that, although heteronormative forms of gender, kinship and labour are increasingly becoming precarious, they haven’t lost their normative power as a “regulatory ideal” (Butler), thus producing a dialectics of diversification and co-opted normalisation, which includes the state-aided reproduction of class and race privilege. The paradoxical coexistence of the fracturing and the intensification of patriarchal power is therefore best understood as a regime that promotes the neoliberal privatisation and subjectivation of a nowadays pluralized institution of marriage and family

"Der Terroranschlag auf die Türme des World Trade Center in New York am 11. September 2001 hat es geschafft, die Erinnerung an den anderen 11. September, den Tag des Militärputsches in Chile im Jahre 1973 weitgehend zu verdecken. Dabei war dieser Putsch eines der großen, weil einschneidenden Ereignisse in der Entwicklung Lateinamerikas und der Welt in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts...

Mit Rap zur Revolte: Die Bewegung Y’en a marre

    Get PDF
This study examines the successful mobilization of the movement Y’en a marre (We’re fed up) in Senegal in the run-up to the presidential elections in February and March 2012. The article traces this success back to the framing strategies applied by Y’en a marre and its creative use of resources. It is argued that an essential factor in the mobilization was the linkage established by the group between its protests against the third term bid of President Abdoulaye Wade and the precarious living conditions of Senegalese youth. Furthermore, Y’en a marre succeeded in presenting its protests as peaceful and constructive and thereby refuted common negative stereotypes of the youth and the Hip-Hop movement. By using the Hip-Hop movement and rap as resources to spread its message and mobilize new followers, Y’en a marre was able to compensate for its scarce financial resources

Familienpolitik und die „demografische Chance“: Zur postkatastrophistischen Phase einer neuen deutschen Bevölkerungspolitik

Since the reunification, and continuously established since 2002, we can observe a revival of demographic rationalities within German policies – after decades of abstinence from explicit population programs (at least within the Federal Republic), as reaction to cruel Nazi population policy. Demographic projections of the “aging” and “declining” of German population are since then the reference for selective pro-natalist programs. These family policy programs aim to increase the birth rate within academic and middle class sectors while excluding unemployed people from certain welfare services and reducing assistance for poor parents. At the same time, - and this is their public image – they are integrated within policies which tend to increase employment of women and which have accomplished a slight change towards a more liberal paradigm of the family and the role of women. The author analyses the current changes within demographic government programs considering a transition from a “catastrophic “to a “post-catastrophic” discourse. It does so, on the basis of an intersectional theory of the bio-political state – embedding the analysis of family policy within broader utilitarian strategies of administering national populations, also for example within migration policies. The article concludes with an appeal for a fundamental leftist, feminist and antiracist critique of demographic rationalities as part of a common critique of the nation state and continuous trends of economization of the political

Zwei Zahnbürsten, ein Reiskocher und romantische Liebe: Konstruktion und Verfolgung aufenthaltsrechtlicher Scheinehen in der Bundesrepublik

Taking the example of marriages of convenience, the article argues that immigration law reproduces conservative marriage norms. We show that the administrative practices evolving around the assessment of binational marriages that are suspected of aiming at obtaining a residence permit for one of the spouses in fact establish a purpose of marriage which is not covered by legislation. These practices not only are a significant invasion of privacy for the suspected couples, but furthermore are informed by gendered and racialized conceptions of “proper” marriages which are incorporated in influential discourses of migration, family and the nation

Fordismus: Glanz und Elend eines Produktionsmodells

    Get PDF
In the last decades, the concept of fordism has grown in popularity especially among left social scientists. Its aim is to explain certain historical forms of capitalism, notably the period of growing affluence of the working class which started in the 1930s in the US and in the 1950s in Western Europe, which is seen as a new connection of mass production and mass consumption, framed by an interventionist type of political regulation. As the term suggests, the origin of the model is attributed to Henry Ford and his innovation of the assembly line in the Ford Motor Company before 1914. Against this common view, it is argued that the success of Fords production model was limited, and that the later rising prosperity of workers in different countries is not to be explained by the dissemination of assembly lines, but by different types of rationalization and the ability of a then strong working class to enforce its demands of sharing the productivity gains by shorter working time and higher wages
